Why do these games have abnormally long development cycles?

Thank you for 434 days of the greatest title reign in history. Best in the World bab-eh. Don't support Bethesda, buy their games used.

They have pretty normal development cycles, actually.

Game news is the best news.

They don't. The earlier in development a game is announced the longer the development cycle feels. In one interview Svensson said that Marvel vs Capcom 3 and vanilla Street Fighter 4 were at one point in development side by side. Street Fighter 4 released in July 2008 in arcades while Marvel vs Capcom 3 released in February 2011. MvC3 was announced in 2010 though, so it didn't feel like it was in development for that long. Then there is Tekken x Street Fighter, announced with sister game Street Fighter x Tekken but we won't be seeing Tekken x Street Fighter until 2014.

The eariler in development you hear about it the longer it seems, but it's the same development time.

They do?

Melee came out like...two years after the original. What's so abnormally long about that?

For those players who don't speak Australian, we have provided an English translation of the previous scene. Do you want to replay the scene?

brawl- 2008
new game- 2014?

They do seem to keep taking longer and longer and I hate to say, but 6 years is not a normal development time.

Did you see how much content Sakurai stuffed into Brawl? He gives us a lot of quality stuff.

Didn't they only start it after Kid icirrus or was that a different game?
And 6 years isn't abnormal, it's just people are getting used to crap being rushed out on a yearly basis.

The new game wasn't in development since 2008. It was announced over a year before development even started.... same thing with brawl... it was announced nearly a year and a half before Sakurai even knew he would be involved. That's why they seem to take so long.

The new one has been in development only since mid 2012...
