Dangers of going digital-only

1. Create a Club Nintendo Account (if you haven't already).

2. Link your Club Nintendo Account to your 3DS of choice.

3. Record the serial number of your 3DS with digital games.

4. In the event of damage/lost/stolen 3DS contact Nintendo Customer Service with serial number and Club Nintendo Account number to retrieve downloaded games.

5. Why would you let your 3DS become so terribly damaged or stolen?

If they did that there'd be quite a lot of risk if account security was compromised.

You could lose hundreds of dollars if someone got into your Amazon account too. Doesn't mean an account system isn't extremely useful and necessary.

Or XBL, or PSN, etc etc etc.

Plus, what if I sold one of my systems but wasn't able to transfer data first? They'd deny me that but if I dropped it and it shattered that would be worth a transfer...or...?

The danger is mainly just with Nintendo's devices since their account systems are the most anti-consumer in the business (or any business that allows for digital downloads). They're incompetent beyond belief, which is why all their failures lately are hilarious. Hopefully it teaches them a lesson.
