Never played Fire Emblem, would Awakening be a good intro to series?

Was never really into these sorts of games, until I played Pokémon Conquest which I enjoyed. Playing the demo for Awakening just now, would it be a good way to get into series

Definitely. I've never played any other FE game before (except Shadow Dragon for like 10 minutes, which I found boring), and I'm having a blast with Awakening.

Definitely consider FE7 for GBA if you can acquire it.

Yeah Awakening is a GREAT title. Also happens to be one of the easiest (you can change the difficulty, but Normal mode is a good place to start). Shadow Dragon was a good game, but it was basically a port of the first game. It had better graphics and a couple of helpful features, but gameplay-wise, it was very basic.

It is perhaps the best place to start.

I have played all of the US localized fire emblem games, I'm a fan of the series. IMO - its one of Nintendos more... mature/well written series.

This one is best simply because it has a difficutly slider. The old ones? Oh, you lost your guy to the boss in the last turn because of one mistake? Well, they're gone forever!

*restart*

I still play that way, but I understand its daunting for new players. Perma death adds real weight to every choice you make.

That and this one has side missions and stuff. I know sacred stones did too, but not the first FE. So if you didn't use a certain character enough you'd get into the late game and they'd be useless/underleveled.

You wouldn't happen to be part of the Ambassador program, would you? If you are, you can download Sacred Stones for free, which another awesome title in the series.

Awakening is probably the best place to start. It gives you some back story from the first game, the DLC is purely fanservice spanning every FE game out there, you can freely move about the world map once you unlock the areas, and you can grind money and xp easily with one of the dlc if you're one of the people that like to min-max but hate the amount of time it can take. (Yeah, I abuse the crap out of that xp level.)

Also you actually get to USE your character, unlike most the others.
