So what are the Shin Megami titles like?

#1urmomishawt04Posted 4/23/2013 6:48:57 PM
I recently purchased Soul Hackers but I haven't played it yet nor will I for a while (FE, LM2 etc. etc.)

People say to pre-order SMT4 or else I won't be able to buy it (can't blame you, it's Atlus).

I know Soul Hackers is very different since it's an earlier title but is SMT4 going to be at least similar? If I like SH will I probably like the other SMT titles?

Guess I should try one of the DS games. Recommend one if you can.

It's like...

Like a mature version of Pokemon, with a bit more complication on the surface.

Strange Journey or Nocturne are pretty good places to start, I'd say. If you like SH there's a good chance you'll like the rest.

This will give you a short general idea of the main titles

And this link will give you a more in depth look

Essentially Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, Persona, Majin Tensei, and Digital Devil Saga are spin-offs of the main titles. SMT4 is apart of the mainline titles that consist of SMT1, 2, if..., 3 (aka Nocturne), and SJ. If... and SJ are gaiden titles but they are main entries.

i'll tell you one thing:
any thoughts you have of it being like pokemon... GET IT OUT OF YOUR HEAD.
let's start on SMTs basics:
to get a demon to join you (not capture) you have to CONVINCE THEM to join you, none of that weaken them then capture, on the contrary attacking demons will make them NOT join you.
at least SMT1 you are almost never given clear instructions where to go, you need to figure it out (or use a guide whatever LOL)
also the story is a lot more matured talking about death and revenge and romance and wars and going up against GODS.
there's more complicated things like demon fusions and branching stories and just difficulty in general make it a LOT different from your usual RPGs

Well that's just not true anymore. It used to be, but given Atlus' surge in popularity in the past five years, it's fairly easy to find any of their recent titles in spades.

Ahem...I had to check 5 different stores for Soul Hackers. I finally found it in Oregon City, a good 40+ minutes away from me.

More like Pokemon is a kiddy version of SMT.
