Aonuma: New 3DS Zelda is "Significant Departure" From Way Most Zeldas Are Played

Also stated: The inspiration for the major "turning into a drawing" mechanic was drawn not from Paper Mario, but from the Phantom Ganon boss fight in Ocarina of Time.

The inspiration for the new ability comes from one of the bosses in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The Forest Temple’s main antagonist, Phantom Ganon, had the ability to jump into one of six paintings on a wall – to which Aonuma wondered, “what if Link could have the same power?”

I never even thought about that until now, and OoT is my favorite game. Well played, Aonuma, well played.

There go all the arguments that Zelda is ripping off Paper Mario.

I don't see Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony. I see Mario, Zelda, Uncharted, Resident Evil, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, etc. Play games, not companies.

...anyone who ever said they were ripping off Paper Mario is an idiot. The mechanic isn't even similar.

You'd be pretty shocked. It's not a huge thing, but I have seen multiple people say it.

I don't see how the mechanic is a significant departure.

In SA2, it's Super Sonic and Hyper Shadow.

Me neither, but of course they're going to say something like that with each new game that introduces some sort of hook (and pretty much all of them do... be it motion control, wolves, boats...).

As bad as you think the DS games were, claiming they're not really Zelda games is pretty stupid.

Skyward Sword I can understand, seeing as it played very differently.

Zelda games are about exploration.
those games had some of the worst examples of exploaration i ever seen.
spirit tracks doesn't make sense barring you stop dirrectly over water, there's NO reason you cannot bring a train to a complete stop and then walk.

and this wouldn't even be that bad if we could lay down our own train tracks like nintendo said we could.
