and I can't change my router settings in my house it'll piss off everyone in my house when all they see is "ATT wifi"

If your router has it, set the guest settings, on the router, for that.

Interestingly enough I got the Zone to show up flashing like it's there, and I managed to get one pass, but I Haven't gotten anything since so something isn't right someplace... :( I will have to try again when I'm back from vacation.

you can only get 1 per mac address for every 8 hours, if you want more than 1 per 8 hours you'll need to change your mac address to....
4E:53:50:4F:4F:4_

replace the "_" with a number from 1-6 and A-F
7-9 is usually reserved for people that want to exchange SP data

7= animal crossing
8= fire emblem, EO4, SMT4
9= monster hunter

you can invade these numbers too without the sp the game data but that would be a jerk move because people on those channels expect to SP those game data

Well that was fun. Because i have more then one 3ds in the house I only managed to Streetpass them to each other. (More then once per mac address change so i know it was working from the wireless spooffing.)

Ask Santa for an inexpensive router on the list compatible with DD-WRT firmware.

Dedicate a router to your 3DS.

That's what I did. I have a 3 year old Netgear router connected to my U-verse modem.

Saves a lot of hassle.

No, there are other methods. Android, router with flashed firmware, linux, windows 7 and 8 with built in wireless cards or usb dongles, there's a variety of tutorials around here and on GBAtemp.
