What's with handheld developers and turn based combat?

This is more towards the DS since my experience with the 3DS is low.

It seems like 90% of the RPGs in the DS library are turn based. Why is that? Is it so hard to create an Action RPG for a change?

Go look at the top 10, every single one of the games is turn based.

I don't dislike turn based combat, but it gets old. Not to mention the handheld games don't tend to have engaging turn based combat like Fallout 1 and 2 do.

I'm one of the really big minority who enjoyed Sonic Chronicles. If not for the rushed ending, it would have been a pretty high-ranked game for me. Still, I liked it. Nice combination of a turn-based RPG with some touch screen action.

Totes agree man. 70% of my games(I have 13) are turn-based, because I love RPGs, but almost all of it's turn-based. KHDDD was a disappointment, but one of the only action-RPGs I've played.

You must be new to handheld gaming.

It's been like this ever since the GBA days, and I'm glad it stays that way. Not saying that a system must ENTIRELY consist of turn-based RPGs, no because everyone loves variety. But just saying that the genre should definitely be the main focal point for handhelds, since the two go so well together.

At least for the DS, the action RPGs that i played weren't as enjoyable (Phantasy Star 0, and that one game with dragons you can summon and whose characters are designed by the Dragon Ball Z guy -- can't remember the name). The controls always felt kinda clunky, and maybe that has something to do with how much that system is capable of?

The 3DS is a whole new thing though, and I agree that it would be nice to get more action RPGs for it.

This. Chronicles has one of the best RPG battle systems I've ever played IMO. Retro and innovation perfectly combined.

Nope, it's action adventure. There's no RPG elements to it whatsoever.
