Original trilogy release order:
- Curious Village
- Diabolical Box (aka Pandora's Box)
- Lost Future (aka Unwound Future)

As for the prequel trilogy:
- Last Specter (DS)
- Miracle Mask (3DS)
- Azran Legacy (3DS)

You should play the original trilogy before the prequel trilogy. The original trilogy is not as... refined as the newer games (though really only the first game and arguably the second) and it'll feel weird going back to them after you play the more recent PL games. Anyway story-wise the two trilogies should be fairly self-contained and you don't really need to play one to understand the other (I've only played Last Spectre in the prequel trilogy though so don't quote me on that).

Layton and Luke are pretty much the only constants between the original and prequel trilogies, as far as main characters goes, so you can play either trilogy first.

Thematically, it's probably better to play the original trilogy first, since some reveals and cameo appearances are more of a surprise that way.
