Is the game rather similar to the classic RE games?

I've heard all kind of good stuff about this game being as close to the classic RE games and I'm really thinking about buying it for the PS3 when it releases on May 21, 2013. I'm a big fan of the classic REs so this is good news for me.

So for the people that played and finished this game? How is it?

It's a really good RE game, more focused on the survival horror aspects of the series than any other recent post RE4 RE game. You'll find these reviews helpful:

haven't played yet but my impression is this game is another RE4 more than the originals.

It's scarier than RE4 and way less action oriented.

If you're a fan of RE0-3, this just isn't nearly as good. It is still enjoyable and has a decent mix of the more action oriented RE series and the survival horror series of the original.

I was really disappointed with it after reading all the reviews but you have to get a few chapters in before it starts to come together as a decent RE title. It's definitely not as amazing as some people make it out to be but it's not hard to find a copy for ~20 and it's definitely worth it.
