What kingdom hearts games would I have to play to understand this?

Of course the game has a flashback thing that tells you the story of the game that happen before it so you don't have to play them. But playing them might make the experience better.

3D gives you a nice summary for each of the other KH's.

TacticalWarrior has a point.

Days may be a well written story-driven game with a great script, but to understand DDD it's really not much more important than Re:Coded.

Xion has a very minor appearance in this game which is barely crucial to the main story, not much bigger than the "Coded" scene at Disney Castle talking about the data.

Not recognizing/knowing who Xion is won't really get you lost.

Same with Saix/Isa randomly attacking, but that can be gathered from KH2.
