I know from Wild World that the best place to plant new fruit trees is to chop down existing trees b/c you can be sure that the new tree will grow. My question is: Is it better to chop down an existing fruit tree to make sure that the new fruit tree will grow, or can you chop down ANY tree?

Also, do saplings need to be watering in order to grow into trees, or can you just leave them alone and they will grow fine?

Chopping down old trees isn't gauranteed, it's just more likely. I've had saplings die, because the TREES were already there when the game started, even though the location wasn't the best.

As for fruit vs any, typically any tree will work.

Nope. Only flowers.
