Apparently there's a limit to how much furniture you can have in a room at once.

Yes, there is. The room limit in the Exhibit rooms is 48, just like in your house. Stop spreading misinformation.

I just realized you cant put gyroids on display cases anyway. I just stuck some gems on there instead. It looks like it fits in the museum.

Odd I remember dropping turnips on every square of my basement on GameCube, which means 64.

I don't ever remember hitting a limit in the Gamecube one. Must have been pretty high. But that was a long time ago anyways. It could be that the furniture has become more complex over time thus limiting how much the system can handle in one room at one time.
But I have never seen anything close to lag, and Animal Crossing is not a graphically intense game. It doesn't look like it should be a problem.

You have to remember. Most of the furniture items are really high polly. The accessory mannequin heads alone must have around 300 different polly faces. having all of those items out at once takes a toll on the available resources. Specifically the RAM and graphics.

There is AND gyroids don't fit in display cases. Not sure about the stands though.
