Lightning does tend to keep things in check. I've seen a lot of people who tried to hold on great items for a long time just end up losing them when Lightning hits.
This even happens when they try to hold on to something to protect Lightning. If it's used fast enough, it catches almost everybody off guard. Ironically, they get away with it more if the person who gets Lightning decides to hold on to it.

The removal of the Fake Item really damaged this game's item system- everything 2nd can get 1st can block it completely, AND 2nd has the added handicap of defending their place from 3rd, which is where the better items begin to spawn (3-Reds and 3-Mushrooms) so they can't use their items all of the time.
Yeah. I agree. I don't think the POW Block should have been removed either. A lot of people complained about there being too many items that affected everyone in the race, but it wasn't that bad (especially since it was easy to avoid spinning out completely when it hit you) and it's quite clear in this game that it did an important job of keeping item use more balanced.
