With the dotted box and white outline, it looks like it's being pasted into the environment.
This could actually be a pretty cool mechanic if utilized correctly.

Mario could collect objects on the overworld, either by gaining them in puzzles or exploring, and then he can paste them into different parts of the overworld via the touch screen. Bridges, staircases, blocks, switches, gears, etcetera. This would allow you to pass previously uncrossable areas, or activate events, allowing tons of new possibilities for overworld puzzles.

That or it's this games equivalent to the page flipping when you caused an event on the overworld in Thousand Year Door, and I'm overthinking things.

That would be an interesting feature. It sure would make for some interesting puzzles and secret areas. I think it's probably just like how the pages flipped in TTYD though, like you said.

That sounds like a pretty cool gameplay mechanic.

It could be something like that or just a scripted effect, though.
