Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Flaws of the Sticker Battle system
Back To: Board List | Topic List | Topic Archived
NOTE: Some of these things might not apply to everyone, but they could for a lot of people. 1. Lack of Sticker diversity makes battles very repetitive and eventually boring. 2. Enemies all feel the same. Almost none require any specific strategy. Again, this makes battles very repetitive. 3. "Thing" Stickers are overpowered and fun, but they're such a pain to re-acquire that they aren't worth using in non-boss fights. 4. After you've done everything you need to with coins, or they get maxed out, battles lose all worth. 5. Lack of Badges or anything similar prevents you from having any real control on how future battles play out. 6. You can only attack enemies from the front, severely limiting your strategic options and freedom. 7. Stickers never change position in levels, so any later playthroughs through any particular level will be almost exactly the same as your first one. 8. Since you have only two battle options at any given moment, wasting a valuable stickers is oftentimes unavoidable. You can add other points to the list or try and argue against some of them. --- Quote and Curly Brace for Super Smash Bros 4! Appeasing an unlimited amount of chocolate . . .
I don't get why they just don't make a real sequel to TTYD the only explanation i can come up with is that they don't like money. The Paper Mario fan base is decreasing with every spin off they make. What kind of RPG doesn't have an Exp system? --- PSN: Bust-A-Cap80
rave50000 posted... I don't get why they just don't make a real sequel to TTYD It might be because they thought the old battle system was too complex or something, and casuals would have a difficult time with it. Do I think they would? No. --- Quote and Curly Brace for Super Smash Bros 4! Appeasing an unlimited amount of chocolate . . .
or they thought they did all they could do with TTYD . they probably felt it'll get repeptive doing a third game.
LonelyGoomba posted... or they thought they did all they could do with TTYD . Well, they would be wrong. It's not totally revamping the combat system is the only option. I have so many ideas that could make it still fresh, --- Quote and Curly Brace for Super Smash Bros 4! Appeasing an unlimited amount of chocolate . . .
LonelyGoomba posted... they probably felt it'll get repeptive doing a third game. This is from the same studio that just released the thirteenth Fire Emblem not too long ago, right? --- God makes mistakes too...--duderdude3 Agree'd. Most of those mistakes post here.--SwordMaster100
Here we go AGAIN !!! Yet another "why isn't this like ttyd?" topic from wiiking96 --- Ah, yes, the old "sandwich" tactic...How delectable...
ReturnOfStarman posted... Here we go AGAIN !!! I didn't see a single thing in his OP about TTYD except the lack of badges. He's just saying what he disliked about the sticker system. As for me, I didn't want another TTYD, I wanted another Paper Mario. This is not another PM. And before you ask, I've seen his other topics. I didn't see any mention of TTYD in this one though. --- You can solve all problems by bombing them rapidly. "You will not enjoy that shrimp with sauce while I'm around!"-Drake & Josh
Normally I would come in and get into a debate with you which would then lead to a retread of every previous argument we've had but I wont do that you are entitled to feel however you wish about this game but that being said number 3 is wrong since you can also buy the thing stickers as well making backtracking unnecessary unless you hate spending coins. otherwise your list is basically how you feel about the game. --- Alt to Millamac: The Official Apollo Justice of all boards
Sure, what the heck, I'll address them. I don't have a problem with people calling these flaws, but I really don't agree that they are relatively worse flaws than TYD had. 1. Lack of Sticker diversity makes battles very repetitive and eventually boring. As far as I am, this is not the case. Since you have to use up stickers, it actually becomes much less repetitive than TYD. TYD had more attacks total, but since they weren't consumed, you just end up using the same actions in battle unless you equipped new badges. In this one, since you run out of stickers, you end up using different ones from battle to battle, even if you are facing the same enemy composition. 2. Enemies all feel the same. Almost none require any specific strategy. Again, this makes battles very repetitive. I agree with this. I think since attacks are consumable, it would have been a bad idea to make you use certain stickers against certain enemies(imagine more enemies were designed like the bosses, where you "need" a certain sticker). So yeah, it's a legitimate flaw with the concept. I don't really think it makes the game repetitive though, actually less, since if you introduce enemies that require specific attacks, you are going to use those specific attacks everytime, and that would be even more repetitive. 3. "Thing" Stickers are overpowered and fun, but they're such a pain to re-acquire that they aren't worth using in non-boss fights. I agree with the statement, but I don't really think it's a flaw. Would it be better if they were overpowered and easy to get? I think that the flaws with the thing system is that there are just too many of them. 4. After you've done everything you need to with coins, or they get maxed out, battles lose all worth. TYD was much worse with this. Because of the way the XP system worked, enemies became less and less worth it to fight as you gained levels in the same area. It came into play a lot more in TYD, because it would go through a new cycle in every area, rather than just going through the one cycle in PMSS. 5. Lack of Badges or anything similar prevents you from having any real control on how future battles play out. I really don't understand what you mean here. You can buy stickers, so you can control how battles play out. 6. You can only attack enemies from the front, severely limiting your strategic options and freedom. I agree wholeheartedly with this. It's so freaking annoying. 7. Stickers never change position in levels, so any later playthroughs through any particular level will be almost exactly the same as your first one. I guess, but I only go through areas again if I suspect I'm missing something, so I'm more focused on that to notice that the stickers are the same. In fact, I'd probably be distracted if they weren't. 8. Since you have only two battle options at any given moment, wasting a valuable stickers is oftentimes unavoidable. That's the whole point of the system. All stickers are meant to be used, not hoarded. That valuable sticker has no value sitting around in your sticker book, and they are all replaceable, so there is no reason to sweat over losing a valuable sticker. --- I used to be perplexed at all the hate that D3 got until I realized that the series is the western equivalent of Final Fantasy and the fanbase hasn't caught on. |
