Why do so many people see this game as a let down?

Excalibur wins the thread. He speaks so much truth. I still can't comprehend why a couple people here defend this game so much. Felt the same way about Dream Drop Distance and its fans. Buyer's remorse I guess.

Cause fanboys didn't get what they wanted. This game is fantastic, regardless of "negativity" from "PM die-hard fans". I like the change it has. Goombella's note was a nice reference.

Life is an RPG. The drawback is, there is only one chance to play this RPG.

This is so wrong! Just because we want some of the old mechanics does not make us negative seeking fanboys/girls. Have you not read the wiiking96 thread? Besides you're making a huge generalization, grouping together the fact that fans want some PM RPG elements returned and assuming we want an exact replica of TTYD or PM1. While we're fine with innovation, some basic elements of gameplay should be consistent with the entire series.

Look at it this way, Paper Mario classifies itself as an RPG! Final Fantasy is an RPG and all games (however much they changed FFXIII) still had a turn based battle system/experience with party members and an actual story. In fact, isn't this the basis of ALL RPGs (Dragon Quest, Tales of, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profiles, Pokemon) though? Stop blaming fan expectations when it's the entire genre which uses this formula (in different ways albeit but they amount to the same thing).

Why change an RPG (when it classifies itself as one) into more and more of a platformer? They've already got their dozens of super mario games...so why change one of their other games into more of the same thing?

Also, compare the success of PM64 and TTYD with SPM. PM N64 and TTYD were doing well with that formula and so IS should have realised that SOMETHING was working. Innovation is FINE, but with SPM was doing less well and getting lower rated reviews, IS should have realised not to go further in de-RPGising PM because PM had a formula which WORKED while SPM NOT SO MUCH. They should have gone back to the original concept and then changed things from there again.

Also there is a false perception that Western gamers prefer platformers to RPGs and Japanese developers change their games to reflect that. However, they also don't realise that Western gamers actually do LOVE RPGs like World of Warcraft and Eldar Scrolls...

ITT: A bunch of people who bought a game without doing their research first.

Seriously, if you guys did ANY looking up on a game at least a week in advance of it's release, you would have known exactly how the game was going to be, and NOT have "wasted your money", as you may believe. If you willingly purchase a game simply expecting a specific thing because of its title or the series prior, then it's only your fault for buying it.

No one forced you to spend your money unwillingly on a game you wouldn't have enjoyed, and there were TONS of reviews out for this game, including video reviews, where you get the chance to see actual gameplay (this is without mentioning the 34 minute video that's been released for who knows how long that showed a 34 minute video of a guy actually playing the game).

So, really, most of the people complaining are the people who saw the older pics from, like, 2 years ago and never looked back, holding their hopes on a pedestal because the truly believed that was going to be how it was gonna be released. Those who knew what they were getting and still bought it have really only themselves to blame for expecting more than what they got.

All of this. To add people need to stop deeming only what they like as correct change or correct progression. This is nintendo they have a set demographic, an evolving style and a notoriously unpleased fanbase every game they make has to be researched cause it may or may not go in the direction people want

I agree with this completely. By the way, two of those examples are real time, not turn based. I see your point entirely though.

Because they wanted a reskin of TTYD, and that's not what this is.

Nope

Care to explain how the common complaints don't reduce to wanting a reskin of TTYD?

Look it up yourself. I'm not explaining it for the 500th time.

Funny, because I have looked it up, and it still basically reduces to "we want a reskin of TTYD". More to the point, they want to stick to the basic RPG formulas while keeping the game so tough to play that only the Hardcore Fans (tm) will even bother. They want the series to be Just For Them, which is why it shouldn't cater to them at all: that's the attitude that ruins gaming.

That's not what people are asking for. I'm not a huge fan of the sticker system, but it's fun enough. I have no problem keeping that and other changes, but there are other aspects of the series I don't want to see changed. Like completely tossing out all plot. It makes the worlds all fell pretty dull and lifeless.

Then you must be horrible at doing research and reading. I suggest you fix that

Thanks for totally ignoring me. Please explain how what we want is a rehash. If don't, then I have no reason to believe anything you say is anything more than a load of hot air.

Fanboys tend to see only what they want to see. Just ignore him and move on, lol. No point in reasoning with those who willingly embrace ignorance.
