Shizuku = Drippy
Marl/Maru = Esther
Gyro = Swaine

*these changes were shown at 2 months ago when an English version was playable at an event

Not sure why Maru and Gyro changed so much but... there's probably a reason. I suspect that most other names were changed as well except Arie (Oliver's mother) and Oliver.

I always assumed that Oliver's mom's name was Allie.

Other than that, we also have a few names for desert-area Imajinn
the first kind of babana-man is a Yellow Buncher
the Ko-Alabbin is now Turban Myth
Grumpeafowl isn't too different from the original, though (guranpii / grumpy / grumpea)

Also, Goronell Town has been renamed Ding Dong Dell, and its sewer system has been christened "The Ding Dong Well"

I'm dying to know why they do with Dotonmori. I laughed so hard when I saw that name.

I think it was a reference to the French language since in French Doton Mori means "Foret d'Automne" (Autumn Forest), where "d'Automne" is exactly pronounced "Doton".

Sorry DQ7, my post was kinda vague!

Dotonmori is actually a play on a place called Dotonbori in Osaka. I actually lived only 5 minutes from Dotonbori so it was great to see this in the game. Everyone in Dotonmori speaks with an Osakan accent which tops it off.

What I meant was I wonder how they will localise that place. :)

Hmm, those name changes seem a bit random and unnecessary. I've never understood why they like to change names around so much in translations when there's no good reason to...the Zelda series does this a lot too.

Interesting, I never knew that. Dotonmori is probably my favourite place in the game, since it's one of the few that actually has a lot of personality instead of just using a generic fantasy template. From what I've heard, Shizuku/Drippy is going to have a Welsh accent, so I guess they'll do the same for the Dotomori guys.

That Osaka accent sure is annoying when you're a non-fluent Japanese speaker like me, though. -_-

I know how you feel Gwendal, I'm not fluent either and the Osakan accent throws me too. Even though I lived there for 2 years. :( Luckily my gf is from Osaka and she translates anything I miss. :D

I really like Dotonmori too, it's a fun place, just like Dotonbori lol. I heard about the Welsh accent too, but it will be kind of strange since Wales isn't exactly known for it's neon signs all over the place!

Sounds nice...unlike some of us who just have to muddle through and resort to the dictionary when needed. :P

At least this game has furigana. Then again, I actually prefer playing without it, since it's a bit distracting and ugly, even if that means I might have to look up a few words the hard way. This game does have pretty nice furigana that fades a bit more into the background, though, unlike, say, Skyward Sword with its very bright furigana font.
