Mediocre reviews because of difficulty?

Over 60 hours in, one death. The game is not hard at all. The difficulty is what you make of it. My guess is that reviewer was being stationary just pressing Attack like an old school turn based RPG and got owned.

Enemies in new areas are stronger yes, but thats been the case in every rpg ever made. Seems more likely the reviwer was bad at it, then took off points for what was their shortcoming.

Goto Casino, talk to skeleton and take a picture of death count. Because I dont think i believe you.

The day and age when a 7/10 is deemed mediocre...sigh.

Honestly, I don't know what Game Informer's talking about. The game's really not that hard. But then again, these are the guys that also gave DQVIII a 7/10 because of the fact that you actually had to level grind. So I think those reviewers are simply too lazy to grind.

i loved dqVIII, i dont remember having to do an excessive amount of grinding in it though, its been awhile, my memory could be mistaking me. either way, i dont mind a little grinding as long as i dont have to spend hours fighting the same enemy over and over.

Everyone I know who has played this game loves it. I open my Game Informer and see 7/10 where they praise EVERYTHING except the difficulty. They complained about losing money when you died and they made it sound like they died a lot, even against normal enemies...

I am picking it up this week, but I was wondering how difficult it really is. I am kind of excited to hear it has some merit to it and isn't so easy a 5 year old could beat it in a day.

Also, how long is the game? Would you say the average RPG length 60 hours?

The game is challenging to a point.

The main issue is that you get the ability to recruit familiars about 10 hours in. Once you get this ability 99% of people are gonna spend HOURS trying to catch familiars and level them up. Upon dong so there is a very good chance you will overlevel for the current area of the game. Suddenly all the creatures will run from you making side quests a lot more of a pain.

HOWEVER. you will eventually start doing story quests again and if you DON'T keep grinding for new familiars the difficulty can and will ramp up again and the game will once again become challenging.

All in all, my advice would be to NOT over do it with familiar catching and stick with 3 familiars per character + 3 reserves until you gain the ability to teleport.

this will keep your familiars decently leveled without OVER leveling your characters.

The game is challenging unless you overlevel.

As to the GI review. it's obvious the reviewer did not take the time to grind at all and as a result was stomped often and that hurt their ego.

Normally I agree with Game Informer but NNK is way better than 7/10 IMO. The review mentions broken boss battles being a source of frustration but I can't think of a single battle even remotely broken. I've died a fair share of times during the game but almost all of them were the result of careless exploring, not poor design.

TL;DR, ignore GI's review. A bit of advice though and a very minor spoiler.

Don't focus on only 1 familiar! If you do you'll be in big trouble when you "upgrade them."

Game Informer and Polygon are the only two "Medicore" reviews. So why does everyone latch onto them like they are the only ones who reviewed the game?

Because they're the only two mediocre reviews. Anything different stands out and attracts attention.

Uh I doubt that. Not saying Dark Souls is a superbly difficult game, but it's far more punishing and without the use of the internet or a guide it can be quite a challenging game.

Sorry, I did not insert (sarcasm intended). Dark Souls is probably still my favorite game(and yes it is much harder, especially first play-through). NNK is slightly hard though, I died against Porco Grosso a few times since i dint have a storm element dude.

Ah was wondering about that.

Death in most any game is just gonna happen (unless it's grandia 2 easy), just dark souls made me meet my maker...more times than I could count.
