So I get that a maxed will be better, but nobody explains HOW.

Is the difference in starting stats (of next tier) only, or does the gap widen due to enhanced level bonuses?

I'm assuming it's the difference between me maxing out first-tier basic familiar (hooray) compared to catching a hip-hooray that possibly evolved at level 17 right away without maxing first tier.
