Tidus is Michael Phelps with a damp hand-me-down sword.
It's not as much him being water elemental as it is Spira being a watery world.

In Fortune Summoners, Arche doesn't really have an element to begin with. The closest thing she has is an inert air stone, and the entire point of the game is trying to make it not inert any more.

I guess because light=good and dark=evil.

And in (most) RPGs you are on the good side.

Serph from SMT: DDS is Ice based in his Atma form.
Golden Sun's Issac default abilities are Earth based.
Rogue Galaxy's Jaster had wind/lightning abilities.

Are people confused on what JRPG's are? Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy games are not JRPG's.. RPG and JRPG are different genres.

Final Fantasy games are most definitely JRPGs, at least up until the more recent ones. Kingdom Hearts is not a JRPG.

JRPG is a style of RPG not that it is just made in Japan. Final Fantasy follows the JRPG style.

my first JRPG was FF7 back in 1997

Geez, I feel old. I'm only 21, but started RPGing with Earthbound.

Speaking which, I don't think Ness had an element, assuming it does qualify as a JRPG.

Persona 3 and 4 don't specify a single element, from what I remember (and certainly not light).

Neither Baten Kaitos game portrays the protagonist as particularly light.

Sorry to tell you Mr. Misplaced Pedantic, but you're the only one here who seems confused.
A JRPG is a sub genre to RPG's, there are few if any hard rules as to what differentiates the two.

Rather they are only loosely discernible by varying traditional tropes. This is because RPG’s of all denomination borrow ideas from each other.

Kingdom Hearts is not a JRPG.

It most certainly is. It's also an action RPG.
