Yikes. Ok, then. Guess I'll be moving on.

Only thing I'd disagree withFrom: Hodou | #019
-Emil controls like he's underwater, does not even compare to the smooth gameplay of Lloyd, Zelos, Luke, insert better Tales character here...
I thought he handled fine. Too bad he's the only character who's even worth using in the first place.
-In the beginning there is a single relatively pointless scene with Richter which they flashback to roughly FIVE TIMES in the next HOUR OF GAMEPLAY and many more times beyond that
but what if the player forgot the magic ingredient necessary for converting dreams into reality?
Without Sagacious Richter's words of wisdom ringing regularly in their ear, the nuances of the story would fly right over their head.

I had another friend say that about Emil too, so it could just be me I suppose. The rest of that stuff I stand by though. Game's awful.

Let's see...

-No world map
-Very little additional content beyond main quest
-Incredibly hideous storyline
-Only returning character who isn't absurdly OOC is Collete
-Can't level returning characters, blatantly not meant to ever actually use them
-Monster catching system requires you to either design your party around a single element or mindlessly spam a single spell in order to ever catch anything you actually want
-Unison attacks and mystic artes are laughably easy to spam and potentially game breaking. compare to Abyss where mystic artes were fairly common but not game breaking, or Symphonia where mystic artes were secret hidden techs with very specific requirements
-Monsters are either useless or game breaking with very little in between
-Emil controls like he's underwater, does not even compare to the smooth gameplay of Lloyd, Zelos, Luke, insert better Tales character here...
-Skits and much of the story dialogue are just mindlessly repeating the same jokes ad infinitum (Marta loves Emil, Emil is a wimp, Tenebrae is stuffy, etc)
-Boss battle programming is almost universally clumsy, many bosses never sit still for more than a second making the battle a constant game of "run over and tag the boss, rinse and repeat"
-Story is absolutely mind-numbingly stupid from immediately after the surprisingly good opening to all the way up until the final "big twist."
-Lloyd is actually a shapeshifter who flipping PELVIC THRUSTS AT THE CAMERA
-Majority of the game is spent pursuing and fighting the Generic Anime Villain Squad while waiting for the story to actually start doing something relevant
-Dungeons don't have "puzzles" so much as just a mind-numbingly tedious series of menial tasks that must be done before proceeding
-All grinding is done in incredibly bland "side dungeons" that constantly repeat themselves. You end up doing the same few dungeons roughly 10-15 times each
-In the beginning there is a single relatively pointless scene with Richter which they flashback to roughly FIVE TIMES in the next HOUR OF GAMEPLAY and many more times beyond that
-Initial promises of a good story about realistic consequences for the ending of ToS are almost immediately squandered in favor of "everyone is evil let's go find macguffins"

hey did I mention how much I hate this game

Sounds like a Escort title.

Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality!

Yeah, stay away from this one.

Since we're on topic, is this game even considered canon? I've read some discussions on ToS1's ending through the years and since it seems a majority of people believe that letting Zelos live is canon because he returns in DotNW. I personally go with the first choice because Kratos still lives regardless. The 'killing Zelos off' option seems like it was just pasted on to give us the choice of getting Kratos back in our party. That and I refuse to even acknowledge DotNW's existence, period.

It's a bad game, an awful sequel, and widely accepted as one of if not the worst Tales game available outside Japan.

yes thats true but it is still better than 90% of all othe rpgs

What part of "it's a bad game" makes it better than 90% of all RPGs? The top 10%? Above average? No. It's just mediocre, and a disgrace as a Tales game.

Dawn of the New World really would have been a fine game if it didn't have "Symphonia" in it's name. The issue with the game is mostly that it's a sequel to Symphonia.

There are plenty of Tales of games without a world map, with bad dungeons, that play just as bad as this (I'm looking at you, Radiant Mythology) but those are mostly escort titles that improve within the series (Narikiri Dungeon and Radiant Mythology are shining examples of that.) I think if they had of ditched the concept of a sequel Symphonia 2 would have been a fine game, take out all the Symphonia stuff and just build the game around Emil and Marta in their own world, it would have been a fine Escort title. Which is the key word here, escort title. Because that's what it is. Even if it is a sequel to Symphonia, you can't expect the quality of a mothership title in it.

I waited around for Kratos at Flanoir. Every single time.
Pretty sure the alternative, anyone else path is 'canon' for whatever that's worth(not much).
Pretty sure 'canon' anything in that game basically amounts to choosing the default Colette option at every turn.
I don't care. I always got what I wanted for Tethe'allan Christmas.
A dead Zelos and the temporary triumphant return of papa Aurion, complete with snazzy new costume and a spell so awesome that if it were to ever actually finish casting before a battle ended, it would break the game(......or do meager damage at random. One or the other). "Sacred powers...cast your purifying luck upon this seemingly ordinary trinket...rest in peace conveniently aimed Indiana Jones-styled booby trap!!"

Yeah I'm sorry but we're seeing a lot of "it's an escort title" as an excuse here.

A bad game is a bad game. I dont care where it lies in the Namco Tales series, if it's not good then it's not worth playing.

*to clarify I don't mean just in this thread, I mean that's the common reasoning behind why DotNW is "allowed" to suck. "it's just an escort title, you should enjoy it for what it is," etc.
