Speaking of "jade", I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned Jade Empire--at least as an honorable mention. The game had a great story and gameplay and was a true gem.

In no particular order. The games are not necessarily the best, but they are the ones I've replayed and will replay several times more because they are that fun/good.

Chrono Trigger
Treasures of Rudra
Final Fantasy 7
Seiken Densetsu 3
Breath of Fire 3
Final Fantasy 6
Suikoden 2
Valkyrie Profile
Baldurs Gate
Phantasy Star 4

Shame it's only a top ten, so many good games I want to have on the list <.<

In no particular order (without repeating games from the same series):

1) Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
2) Suikoden III
3) Final Fantasy XII
4) Dragon Quest VIII
5) Tales of the Abyss
6) Fallout 3
7) Mass Effect 2
8) Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
9) Chrono Trigger
10) Xenoblade Chronicles

If I wasn't restricted to one from the same series... more than half the list would have been a spinoff game from the Shin Megami Tensei series.

First of all this was my list just as everyone else has theirs.

In his defense the list was about your favorites, not your not-favorites-and-why-you-don't-like-them.

1) Yes CC and Vagrant Story had boring battle systems. LOD's was miles better. It was in no way as polished as other better rpgs but the game was endearing and had an epic feel to it.

I loved and still love Chrono Cross' battle system. It was the very picture of gameplay efficiency and depth rolled into one game. There was virtually no repetitive time-consuming actions anywhere in the game except where you chose to delve into it.

I never played enough Vagrant Story to give an opinion.

2) The length of time people spend does not equate to it being a good battle system. VS had appeal and other strong points e.g graphics. It did not have a good battle system. Press X, press a different button, press another one... It was like a rhythm game lol.

If your definition of a rhythm game is simply pressing buttons to attack then I don't know what to tell you...

3) That was a mistake and if you had half a brain you would have figured i meant CT not CC.

Chrono Trigger had some of the most vibrant and lively sprites of the 16-bit era, and they're still quite expressive and well-done by todays' standards, they're just low-resolution. If Chrono Trigger were remastered with HD sprites, even with no animations added, it would probably be among the most beautiful games of all time.

4) You obviously don't know the meaning of half of those words. How can a guys opinions of games be bigoted? Also there are no 3d FF games. And finally to correct you i don't think people who like the older FFs are delusional. I do think those that think they're better than VII are though.

FFVII was a great game, in my mind, but it's handily beaten by FFV in the Gameplay Department. The Job System is just the gift-that-keeps-on-giving when it comes to replayability, the story wasn't overly time-consuming or complex, and the sidequests always rewarded you with amazing spells/gear 100% of the time. Plus building up a single character into a dual-wielding powerhouse with Berzerker Strength and Thief Speed was just plain more rewarding than maxing a Materia, which took WAAAAYYY TOOOOO LOOOOONG. By the time you finally get those damn things to unlock higher-tier spells they're already halfway outdated, magic is borderline useless throughout almost the entire game except the very beginning, the end, and the odd Summon, barring healing magic of course, which is the only reason to even have MP most of the time.

And finally to reply to your closing comment i DO NOT HATE Xenogears, CC FFIX or most of the others i mentioned. I was simply stating why they didn't make my top 10. Maybe you should take you own advice and stop trying to push your opinions onto others.

Again, nobody asked why games that aren't on your list aren't on your list. This thread is about positive vibes, and you bring negative ones out of nowhere, especially when you're targeting games that are on a LOT of peoples' lists. If you don't see how that's confrontational, I really don't know what to tell you.

That about covers all the best rpgs ever in the best to worse order. Failings have ruled out other so called contenders such as rubbish end game (Xenogears), boring battle system (Chrono Cross/Vagrant Story) and rubbish dated graphics (CC and all FFs prior to 7).

FF7 and 8 both have "rubbish dated graphics" as well, so I really have no idea what you are going on about. The only reason why 9 isn't listed along with those two is because it's art style allowed it to age better.

It's also a bit asinine, in my opinion, to say games that came out 13 - 14 years ago have boring battle systems. Of course they do but the battle systems were good at the time. Maybe not unique or innovative but having a battle system that works is hardly a failing. What exactly is so interesting about the battle systems of Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 7 and 10, and Wild Arms?

Xenogears is also a game that takes about 80+ hours to complete where as most RPGs average at about 50 hours, that's a lot of content. If you meant the pacing of disc two is slower that would at least make more sense, I don't really see how the endgame is lacking comparative to other JRPGs aside from that.

Lastly, Legend of Dragoon is a decent RPG at best with some memorable moments but is laughable on a top 10 list. It's so grossly overrated by its fanbase. The combat is easy, the music is awful, the story is bland, and it has barely any replayability.
