That about covers all the best rpgs ever in the best to worse order. Failings have ruled out other so called contenders such as rubbish end game (Xenogears), boring battle system (Chrono Cross/Vagrant Story) and rubbish dated graphics (CC and all FFs prior to 7).
FF7 and 8 both have "rubbish dated graphics" as well, so I really have no idea what you are going on about. The only reason why 9 isn't listed along with those two is because it's art style allowed it to age better.
It's also a bit asinine, in my opinion, to say games that came out 13 - 14 years ago have boring battle systems. Of course they do but the battle systems were good at the time. Maybe not unique or innovative but having a battle system that works is hardly a failing. What exactly is so interesting about the battle systems of Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 7 and 10, and Wild Arms?
Xenogears is also a game that takes about 80+ hours to complete where as most RPGs average at about 50 hours, that's a lot of content. If you meant the pacing of disc two is slower that would at least make more sense, I don't really see how the endgame is lacking comparative to other JRPGs aside from that.
Lastly, Legend of Dragoon is a decent RPG at best with some memorable moments but is laughable on a top 10 list. It's so grossly overrated by its fanbase. The combat is easy, the music is awful, the story is bland, and it has barely any replayability. Have you played Xenogears? The 2nd disc was rushed to oblivion. It's pretty much this: Still frames and text that explains what happened. Dungeon. Repeat. The dungeons aren't even well made either. --- PSN: TheRedMage ,only EU players need apply All praise the poor Shrine Maiden, the Ordinary Magician and the holy being ZUN. spammo123Posted 2/16/2013 10:51:43 AM | 1: Final Fantasy 6 (3 US) 2: Chrono Trigger 3: Secret of Mana (I believe Action RPG qualifies) 4: Ni No Kuni (have absolutely fallen in love with this.) 5: Final Fantasy 13 6: Final Fantasy 4 7: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (so good I became an Atlus fanboy for a short while, until Persona 3 sucked horribly and I backed away slowly) 8: Final Fantasy 10 (yea yeah. What can I say, it is a good story if you can stomach Tidus' early game whiny phase, which is better-digested than Hope's in 13) 9: Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest 10: Radiant Historia (could just be reminiscent of CT, but it is a nice game with some choice soundtrack options)
Honorable mentions: FF12, Final Fantasy Legend (introduced me to squaresoft, great game for its time), SW:KotOR (plays enough like FF13 or otherwise that I consider it in RPG category) |

The combat is easy, the music is awful, the story is bland, and it has barely any replayability. Fair enough FF7s graphics are quite bad but compared to most previous generation games they were awesome. In terms of major improvements in console graphics imo it was the PS1. That's why i use it as a cut-off point. Totally disagree about FF8 though. I prefer 8's graphics to 9's (as i prefer the game too). Regarding games made 13-14 years ago i played them at the time. They were boring to me then. And to highlight what's good about those games i'll use the old adage 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it' you take a risk trying to be different sometimes it doesn't work out. I'd much rather play an rpg with a standard battle system than anything like graces F for example. Regarding Xenogears i think the post above made my point for me. And finally LOD. Say what you like about it (i know it's 'cool' to hate certain games), I enjoyed it and i find your points inaccurate at best. The combat was harder than many rpgs of it's time (CC for example). The story had an epic feel not found in many rpgs. The music was good imo and it must have replayability cos i've played it multiple times over. --- Playing: Ni No Kuni. Reading: ASoIaF (again). |
