Actually it is since have RPG elements like Str, Level, HP etc...And depending of what you equip it improve some stats or give new ability. It takes many things from Metroid, a sidescroller, but with RPG elements and that makes SOTN an action RPG.

Call of Duty has RPG elements like skills and perks that you unlock depending on your level, which improve stats and give you some abilities. It takes many things from an FPS, but with RPG elements, which makes it a shooter RPG...

Yeah, no...

I think the correct tag that people are looking for is "turn-based" RPG. Any game that you take the role of a certain individual can technically be considered an RPG.

What distinguishes them all is the tagline you put on them. You have "Strategy", "Turn Based", "JRPG", "MMO", "Action" etc.

I believe the original poster was referring to "Turn-Based" RPGs, which are also commonly referred to as "Traditional" RPG's.
