I gather that the 2000 glims can only be collected by Oliver, and only when he is being player-controlled, but is this only Oliver himself, or can it be his familiars too?

Whoever you control, whether it is Oli or a kunimon.

Are you absolutely certain about that? Because I get the feeling I should have the trophy by now if that were the case; certainly, if player-controlled use of Swaine and Esther counted I know I would have gotten it by now, so it really must be only Oliver that counts.

It's player controlled characters. It took me like 60 hours of gameplay to get that trophy and that was with repetitive farming of the Guardian of the Worlds.

Because a) I read that it might be case elsewhere, and more importantly b) personal experience. I got the 1000 battles trophy probably about 30 hours ago, and I've definitely been getting an average of about 2 player-controlled glims per battle, yet no Glim Reaper trophy. There must be some caveats on what does and doesn't count (even more strict than just being a player-controlled character), or else I would have it by now.

Relax.
I remember feeling that I should have gotten the trophy long before I actually did.

So I shouldn't try to just play using Oliver, or just play as Oliver himself? I should just carry on controlling whomever I like, with or without familiars (maybe still chasing after any glims I can), and I'll still get it by the time I finish everything else, so that I won't have to spend time at the end of the game just working on this one trophy? (I'm just about to enter Yule, at 78 hours, if that tells you anything).

Got 1000 battles ~50 hours. Got Glim Reaper ~80 hours.

My advice is to just not worry about it. It'll pop when it pops.

Its orb picked up by character controlled (I picked up orbs like 99% as familiar), not AI's. That's all there is to it. The merit skill that pickups remaining orbs on the field at the end of battles is a godsend (need asap). Takes awhile to get but its easy at least.
Be patient.

edit: Dont doubt masterll
