So I'm running around Hamlin, and I meet the Great Sage, a kid... I then talk to the Emperor, and find out... We're from the future? Huh? I missed some big plot point somewhere, and I have no idea how I missed something that big. When did we get trapped in the past?

When there was that mystery mist. Don't you know that mist = time travel?

I agree it was an awful transition.

It's not a bad transition, the characters are confused about what's going on, too.

I didn't see the characters acting confused. It was more like:

*mysterious mist appears!*

Oh no, guards everywhere!

Oh, it's the Emperor.

Swaine: Yeah, we're from the future.

Me irl: Huh?

Um, barely? For a massive change in setting it happens abrubtly and matter of factly.

Yeah, mist rolled in, and then a bunch of unmasked guards rushed into the room, where before they all had pig masks. The characters reacted with confusion. If you read the words on the screen and look at the pictures, an entire narrative unfolds in fact.

It gets explained later how you ended up in the past.

IMO it makes sense since well...

The person who did it was essentially the Wizard King trying to save his daughter, Cassiopeia.
