First of all, it's Lao Shan Lung. Not Lou Shun Lang, Leo Shen Long, or Loa Shin Leng. If you're going to make another topic about Lao with this one already here, you can at least bother to spell his name correctly.

(The game refers to Azure Lao as "Ashen Lao Shan Lung". However, I will continue to call him Azure, since that is what everyone else calls him, and he gives you Azure LaoS Shells instead of Ashen LaoS Shells.)

What's Lao Shan Lung?
Lao Shan Lung is a massive mountain dragon whose scales became rockhard from WALKING THROUGH MOUNTAINS. That's right, Lao walks through mountains. He wants to walk through some more mountains and through a fort so he can totally trash the Gathering Hall and the Village. You've got to stop him, obviously.

There are two Lao Shan Lung - there is regular Lao, who is hidden in the HR2 Guild quests, and there is Azure Lao (Hard-Ranked), who is the monster in the HR4->HR5 Urgent Quest.

Lao is different from any monster you've ever faced. When you fight a Gypceros, for example, you wait for an opening to attack, then attack his weakpoint for massive damages. The Gypceros dies quickly because it's not very strong and it has very weak weakpoints.

Lao, on the other hand, never attacks you. It's always safe to attack. You can sit in front of him and just poke at his stomach all day, he won't really care. The tradeoff is that Lao has the most HP out of any monster in the entire game (roughly double the HP of HR6 Chameleos), and takes fairly low damage at his weakpoints. Battles with Lao always take at least 25 minutes.

Azure? Regular? What's the difference?
Item carves, mostly. You can't get a plain Lao-Shan Scale or a plain Lao-Shan Horn by fighting Azure Lao.

Azure Lao is Hard-Ranked, while Regular Lao is not, so Azure will give out items you can use for making Hard-Ranked armor.

Azure Lao has 26666 HP, while Regular Lao has 23333 HP. Azure Lao hits harder because he's a Hard-Ranked monster. Aside from that, the two are exactly the same. So much the same, that from now on I'm not even going to bother mentioning Regular Lao. Everything about Azure applies to Regular.

How do I unlock Regular Lao?
First, you need to be HR2. Clear EVERY 3* and 4* Guild quest and regular Lao will appear as the last 4* quest.

Beating him in this quest will unlock the Elder Dragon quests in HR3/5* Guild.

Why fight Lao Shan Lung?
Well, for one thing, you kinda have to to get through the game. The Urgent quest to get from HR4 to HR5 is Azure Lao Shan Lung.

Parts carved from Lao are used to create almost all of the Dragon weapons in the game. Dragon weapons are good.

His parts are also used to make Auroros/Borealis Haku armor, which is an excellent set of armor for the blocking weapons - it provides Guard Inc, Guard+2, and Rec Speed+1. It also looks like Samurai armor, which is perfect for those of you who get hard at the thought of anything Samurai related.

What is this fight like?
Lao Shan Lung is walking towards a fort the Guild constructed to stop him from reaching town. You must stop Lao from reaching and destroying the fort.

There are two ways to clear a Lao quest - either repel him or kill him.

Repelling Lao is different from repelling the other Elder Dragons. With the Elder Dragons, if you didn't do enough damage to repel in 25 minutes, you still had another 25 minutes left on the quest to do the damage needed to repel. With Lao, if you don't do enough damage to repel him in 35 minutes, you fail the quest right on the spot.

Also unlike the other Elder Dragons, damage done to Lao does NOT carry over. He starts every round with full health, regardless of whether you repelled or failed the last time you fought him.

How much damage do you need to do to repel Lao?
Nobody knows. Lao has 26666 HP - it would take weeks of testing just to get a ballpark figure because it takes the whole 35 minutes to get a repel.

But anyway, that's the basic premise of the quest. Lao walks towards the fort, you hurt him as he travels (he basically ignores you, so fighting Lao is pretty much like fighting a giant punching bag), and hopefully by the time he's reached the fort, you've done enough damage to kill him. If not, you have to stall him and stop him from destroying the fort until 35 minutes and hope you did enough damage for a repel.

What's this about a Fort?
The fort is equipped with a few weapons to help you kill Lao Shan Lung, though only one of them is worth using unless you're playing multiplayer.

What weapon should I use against Lao?
Your brain. Really though?

(The weapons suggested here are for SOLO players. In multiplayer, you can use pretty much any weapon that doesn't suck - since with two of you, each of you only need to kill half a Lao. If with more than two people you STILL can't do it, then take one of the weapons I've suggested.)

For farming Lao at HR6:
Hammer: Diablos Chaos Broker or Onslaught Hammer
Hunting Horn: War Conga
Long Sword: Smoulder Dragonsword
Bow: Glorious Victory or Akantor Bow
Dual Swords: Ultimus Heaven & Earth
Lance: Black Ruiner Lance or Babel Spear
Gunlance: Gun Chariot

Yes, I know there are many weapon types missing from this list. I'll explain why in a bit.

For fighting Lao the first time at HR4 or fighting Lao at HR2:
Hammer: Anvil Hammer or Kut-Ku Pick
Long Sword: Supremacy Blade
Lance: Grayburg Javelin

Why did you only suggest six weapons for HR6?
Same reason I only suggested three weapons for HR4 (see next question). I only suggested weapons that would get a kill on Lao - since you get more items from Lao by killing him (and nobody at HR6 should have to repel Lao when they can easily kill him with a better weapon). I also didn't suggest weapon types that can kill Lao but take the entire 35 minutes to do so, because it's not really farming when you're barely struggling to finish the quest.

Why did you only suggest three weapon types for HR4?
Like I said, Lao is unlike any monster you've ever fought. Fighting Lao is so different that weapons that were good against other monsters become terrible against Lao.

Why did I suggest a Hammer? Hammers put out a ton of damage, nonstop. Triple pound, roll, triple pound, roll, triple pound, roll. Compare that to another weapon like the GS, who not only has to roll inbetween attacks but has to charge a slow Lv3 Charge Swing as well.

Why did I suggest a Long Sword, Supremacy Blade? Well, for one thing, Supremacy Blade is strong. Second, Long Swords have Tri+Cir, which is perfect for fighting Lao. Do one or two Triangles, Tri+Cir, repeat until dead. It allows you to keep up a constant stream of damage.

Why did I suggest a Lance? Grayburg Javelin has a ton of green sharpness, giving it a bit of an advantage over the other weapons, not to mention it's fairly strong compared to the other weapons I suggested, being the only weapon that is actually Hard-Ranked. Lances also have the backstep and long backstep - Do two or three upstabs, backstep, repeat until dead.

If you want to kill Lao Shan Lung your first time, you will need one of these three weapons and Adrenaline+2. Without Adrenaline+2, you will probably only get a repel.

Can I beat Lao with Sieglin-
What the hell did I just say?

Adrenaline+2? What's that?
Adrenaline+2 is an armor skill that increases your raw attack power by 30% as long as your health is below 40%. It's extremely useful against Lao Shan Lung, since it allows you to use weapons that are otherwise too weak, or get kills with weapons that could only get repels before. The health below 40% condition is not a big deal, because Lao Shan Lung does not attack you.

How do I get Adrenaline+2?
Adrenaline+2 requires 15 Potential. There are two notable armor sets that will get you close to 15 Potential - Monoblos armor and Rajang armor.

Remember, since Lao doesn't attack you, defence doesn't really matter... so this Monoblos set will be effective even against the HR5 Lao, despite it being a Low-Rank armor:

Monodevil Helm - One Danger Gem (Potential+1)
Monoblos Mail - One Danger Gem (Potential+1)
Monoblos Vambraces
Chrome Metal Coat
Chrome Metal Boots

This will give you the skills Adrenaline+2 and Demonic Protection. You also have two open slots on the Vambraces, though I don't think you'll get any useful skills out of it.

If you want a little extra boost, you can make the entire Monoblos S
Set, which will give you Attack Up Large in addition to Adrenaline+2 and Demonic Protection. Keep in mind that Monoblos S requires a Monoblos Heart to complete.

Rajang armor is the alternative Adrenaline+2 armor set, but most players probably do not have access to Rajang armor yet.

Felyne Heroics is better! Why don't I use that?
While it's true that Felyne Heroics gives you even more attack power, you have to bring your health down to 10 to activate it. Although Lao doesn't attack, he still can hurt you a little bit in this quest with his staggers. The damage is low enough for it to not matter to Adrenaline+2 users, but high enough to kill off Heroics users.

If you're using a Bow, you can go ahead and use Heroics.

I don't wanna use Adrenaline+2. What are some other good armor skills?

Sharp Sword - This cuts sharpness loss in half, though it's useless to Dual Swords (Dual Swords have Sharp Sword built into them). This pretty much doubles your sharpness' longevity, which means less time sharpening and more time fighting.

Sharpness+1 - It adds sharpness. Very useful early on, since most early game weapons could use better sharpness.

Sharpen Skill Inc - This makes you sharpen faster. The faster you sharpen, the faster you can get back to killing.

High Wind Res - High Wind Res nullifies the wind (yes, that's right, wind, not quake) created by Lao's feet as he walks. Most people won't need this skill, but you might.

Reckless Abandon+2/+3 - An extra 5% or 7.5% raw damage might be just what you need to finish off Lao.

What items should I bring?

Well, if you're using Adrenaline+2...

Book of Combos 1-3
Farcaster
Bomb Material x2
Exciteshroom x2
Powercharm
Powertalon
Armorcharm
Armortalon
Antidote x1
Small Barrel Bomb x1
Herb x10
Lg Barrel Bomb x2
Lg Barrel Bomb+ x2
Scatterfish x 2
Something to detonate the Barrel Bombs x3

If not...

Book of Combos 1-3
Farcaster
Bomb Material x2
Exciteshroom x2
Powercharm
Powertalon
Armorcharm
Armortalon
Potion x10
Lg Barrel Bomb x2
Lg Barrel Bomb+ x2
Scatterfish x 2
Something to detonate the Barrel Bombs x3

If you're doing this in multiplayer, you'll want to bring along some steaks to keep your stamina up.

Aside from that, everything else you need will be in the Supply Box.

Note that HR6ers will probably need fewer and fewer of these items (namely bombs and healing items) than those who are doing Lao for the first time.

Ok, so now you've got a weapon, a set of armor, and items. Now for fighting Lao...

What's Lao's weakpoint?
Lao's melee weakpoint is his stomach.
Stomach: 55% Cut, 50% Impact, 20% Fire, 5% Water, 15% Thunder, 30% Dragon, 5% Ice

Lao's ranged weakpoint is... his weakpoint. It's only reachable by ranged weapons, and I'll explain exactly where it is in just a bit.
Weakpoint: 80% Gun, 50% Fire, 5% Water, 15% Thunder, 100% Dragon, 5% Ice

Why does everyone tell me to attack the head then?
Lao's head staggers more often. Newbies think that the extra staggering will slow Lao down enough for them to get a repel, but look at how much damage Lao's head takes.
Head: 28% Cut, 20% Impact, 20% Fire, 5% Water, 15% Thunder, 20% Dragon, 5% Ice

That's roughly half the Cutting damage and 40% of the Impact damage. If you can kill Lao by attacking the stomach in 30 minutes, it would take you 60 minutes to kill him with a Cutting weapon attacking the head and 75 minutes with an Impact weapon attacking the head. It doesn't matter how often you're repelling the head, you're not doing enough damage to kill Lao (or repel him, even) in 35 minutes.

However, it is ok to attack the head when his stomach is unreachable (when he's first entering the area).

What's breakable on Lao?
Horn: One head stagger (400 HP)
Head: Two head staggers (400 HP x2)
Left Shoulder: Two shoulder staggers (600 HP x2)
Right Shoulder: Two shoulder staggers (600 HP x2)
Back: Two back staggers (300 HP x2)

All of these breakable areas give you an additional chance at getting a Lao Ruby against Azure Lao.

Lao is huge! How do I know what's what/Where is his ranged weakpoint?
Well, if it isn't obvious to you where Lao's shoulders are...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/svmkorei/lao.jpg

If you can't tell from those diagrams, Lao's ranged weakpoint is the flat area between his first large back scale and his second large back scale.

Ok, what's the fort like?
There are six areas to the fort, plus camp. After you've watched the opening video (you watch this every time you fight Lao, not just the first time), you and Lao will both be in Area 1.

If you're not using a ranged weapon, you can't hit Lao yet. You have to wait about 4 minutes or so until he gets to Area 2. Use this time to look around camp and see what's available.

Base camp connects all five main areas together. You have the usual bed, the Supply Box, a gathering point for Ballista S, and a gathering point for Cannon S.

Lao will go through areas 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 6. Get the map from the supply box and you should understand that well enough.

Each of the main fighting areas is mostly flat. There are a few higher up outposts that you can climb, either to get up onto Lao's weakpoint or to get a better view of his weakpoint.

There's a mini fort in Area 3 that Lao will knock over before passing.

At Area 5, you have the fort itself. The fort has two ballistas - to use them, simply select the Ballista S in your inventory and use it. Hold R to go into first person aiming, and press Circle to shoot the ballista rounds. When you're out or want to get out of the ballista quickly, simply roll. Each ballista does 50 x 2 damage.

The fort also has two cannons - you can't aim the cannon, so only use the Cannon S when you want it to shoot. Supposedly you can hit Lao as soon as he enters the area with the left Cannon, but Cannon S is hardly ever worth using anyway. Each Cannon S does 250 damage.

And finally, the fort is equipped with a four-spike Dragonator. Press Circle near the Dragonator to fire it - you can only fire it once, so don't waste it. Each spike will pop out a short distance nd each one that hits will do 255 damage. This is probably the only thing on the fort worth using if you're doing this alone.

The Supply Box has Anti-Dragon Bombs. How do I use them?
Anti-Dragon Bombs can only be placed in one spot - on Lao's weakpoint. You have to climb up to one of the higher spots, drop down onto Lao's weakpoint, and place the bombs (they're time detonated like Small Barrel Bombs). They do 400 damage each, but most people consider them NOT worth the time spent putting them on Lao's back. They do help with breaking Lao's back, if that's what you're going for though.

p.s. Jesus you guys suck :(

HOW DOES I KILL LAO?
Alright, alright.

I'm using Adrenaline+2. How do I activate it?
Adrenaline+2 requires that your health be below 40%. You can activate Adrenaline+2 on your own with bombs, or with the help of Ioprey. (Ioprey are better, since you're not in a hurry to activate it anyway. Lao takes 4 minutes to get to Area 2) There are Ioprey in Area 6 - simply stand around and let them whittle your health down.

Keep your status window open. As soon as you see your Attack jump up, Adrenaline+2 has been activated. Use the Small Barrel Bomb you brought on yourself to reset the red health (you don't want it to heal or you'll lose Adrenaline+2) and then use the Antidote you brought to cure the poison the Ioprey probably got on you. Head over to Area 2 and get ready to start attacking Lao.

The reason I told you to carry Herbs is because they heal only 20 HP, which makes it easy for you to keep your health below 40% and above 0% :) Remember that if your max Health is 150, 40% is 60 HP, not 40 HP.

Off to an explosive start
You should've brought Large Barrel Bomb+s, and gotten two Supply Barrel Bombs from the Supply Box. Once you see Lao enter the area, watch where his head is. Put down two of the bombs and stand back and wait for Lao's head to pass over them.

Once Lao's head is directly over the bombs, throw your detonator and then immediately get out your weapon and start attacking Lao's head. Repeat this every time Lao enters a new area. If you're really desperate for extra damage, you can bomb him twice in each area (you'll need to bring enough supplies for 14 Large Barrel Bomb+s).

Once Lao's stomach becomes reachable, immediately stop attacking the head and start heading over to the stomach to attack it.

Lao's stomach can be tricky to hit effectively. While it seems like it mostly just sits still and moves forward, it actually sways side to side in sync with Lao's rear leg movements. Left, right, forward, right, left, forward, and so on and so on. If you try to attack Lao's stomach head on without considering this swaying, he'll eventually just push you off to the side with his swaying, causing you to get trapped by his foot wind and losing precious attacking time.

With a Hammer:

You need to face Lao's stomach at a 60 to 90 degree angle, do a triple pound, and then sideroll away from Lao's stomach after the triple pound. After the roll, realign yourself, then triple pound again. You want to be facing right (Lao's left), because of the way the golfswing of the triple pound hits high to your left (if you're standing in the right spot, that should hit him right in the stomach).

MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE HITTING WITH ALL THREE PARTS OF THE TRIPLE POUND. They might not be as strong as the golfswing, but that's still damage you're losing. Reckless Abandon+3 and Sharpness+1 means nothing when you're losing almost half the damage of your triple combo because you're missing.

With a Lance:

Lances have an easier time. Simply face Lao's stomach, do two or three upstabs, do a backstep, and repeat. You will need to occasionally do sidesteps (left or right+X) and long backsteps (backwards+X) to keep up with how his stomach sways back and forth.

With a Long Sword:

Another simple one. Do one or two triangle swings, then do Triangle+Circle to step back. It's pretty much the same as with a Lance, except you will occasionally miss and hit Lao's chest (bad!). You also don't have sidesteps to help deal with his swaying, but the distance covered by Triangle+Circle should make up for that.
