Battleship
Review by roadkill
"Buy the board game"
A truly strange rendition of the classic game known as Battleship. Based off the board game (as in, one you don't play on TV), battleship is a game the always withstood the test of time. But how does the CD-I version stack up?
Graphics - 7
Not too much going on here. It's a giant battleship board. It does have this little box to the side that when you make a move, it displays some classic scenery of various battleships firing. Can get really annoying. Some of them do get rather lengthy. You can skip them if you'd like (I recommend it). When you sink your opponents battleship, you get to watch the ship go down. And when you win, you get to watch a parade in your honor. Yep, there’s a clip for all situations.
Sound - 7
Well, it sounds pretty real and all, but it is pretty startling. I mean, here you’ll be playing along, and all of a sudden this sound of a missile launcher firing hoards of missiles into the air can be heard throughout the house. One thing I like is when you win, the computer doesn’t congratulate you, it merely says “due to some freak accident…”. You gotta love a game with a sense of humor.
Control – 4
The CD-I has one of the worst setups I’ve seen in a home system. There is only one controller port. Yeah, you heard me, one. Not the best multiplayer platform. Well, unfortunately, this means controller passing. The controls are simple to figure out (it’s only got two buttons). You can buy a splitter that allows you to hook in another controller. Well, you could if you can hunt one down.
Replay – 6
Well, it’s just battleship. Fun for a couple of months, but after that it’s like “get that game out of my site”. That combined with the controller passing predicament. Buy the board game.
Overall – 5
I believe that only few board game should make their way to the console. And battleship just ain’t one of em. Well, maybe if they made it cooler and added more stuff. But, as far as this game goes, I’m glad I got it for free when I got the system. This game plays just like the board game, too bad they had to add all that extra stuff. And only one controller port? Now that I can’t forgive.
