Introduction Sonic Championship is a lot of fun for me (though a lot of other games came along since the last time I updated this guide). I decided to make this FAQ to people who haven't play the game or never heard of it since, at the time I made this, Sonic Championship (aka Sonic the Fighters) was pretty obscure. Also, it's Sonic first fighting game (which a friend of mine said it was a unique idea to make a game like this and I agree) and I usually don't like fighting games, but it just pulled me to it. Anyway, I hope you like the FAQ. If you see somewhere that I screwed up on, e-mail me at puyodius[at]gmail.com. 2. Updates August '99: FAQ was born Other dates: FAQ was updated 8/19/01: FAQ was revamped a bit 11/18/01: Movelist completed, added a new section, strategies updated 4/5/02: Sections 7 & 9 updated. 4/29/08: Much needed cleanup. Most likely final update 3. About the Author Hiyas! I'm Ida Kathry(n), but I'm often reffered to as Lil' Ida or Ida-chan. I just loved Sonic the Hedgehog ever since I first saw him when I was 8. In late 1998, I went to Las Vegas with one of my classmates. I convinced my mom to take me to GameWorks. Little did I know what awaited me changed my life... 4. Legal Stuff Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog and all related characters are trademarks of SEGA. This FAQ has no relation to Sega or AM2. In other words, I hope I'm not violating any copyrights making the FAQ. Also, please don't take anything from here without permission (although some of the info came from some web sites, so thanks to all of them!). 5. Info on the game From what I heard from most sites, the gameplay is similar to Virtua Fighter, only on a much simpler level. The Japanese version, which is called "Sonic the Fighters", had a fairly wide release across Japan, but here, it almost wasn't released at all. Lucky for me, I was able to find it at GameWorks in Las Vegas. Sonic Championship was supposed to be released on the Sega Saturn in May 1998, but the Saturn was old news at that time, so there wasn't any market for the game. There were rumors about a Dreamcast version, but that was dead. 6. Plot of the Game (From the GHZ, paraphrased by me) Thanks to a robot bearing a resemblace to Metal Sonic, Tails learns about Robotnik's (or Eggman, take your pick) latest scheme: the Death Egg II. The fox wastes no time making the Lunar Fox (very appropiate name considering the color scheme). However, the Lunar Fox needs the power of the Chaos Emeralds (and there's eight of them!), and even then, only one person can pilot it. The Chaos Emerald bit has already been covered with Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Nack the Weasel, Espio the Chameleon, Bark the Polarbear, and Bean the Dynamite each having one. Fast forward to Sonic and Tails's run-in with Knuckles on the Floating Island. Knuckles suggests only the strongest should go, and that title has his name written all over it. Sonic disagrees, but Tails stops a potentially unneccessary brawl with an idea: a good old-fashioned fighting tournament. 7. Playable Characters, their specialties, and moves *=Move is unable to be dodged a. Sonic the Hedgehog SPECIALTY: Spin Attack MOVES Spin Dive Dizzy Spin Attack* Dodging Spin Attack Spiral Spin Attack Quick Toss* Dash Spin Attack Head Spin Attack* TIPS ON USING SONIC (by stonevamp[at]hotmail.com: "Stone Dead"): "The air combo's are pretty easy and painful. The best way to cheese the game is to do the spin attack constantly, espescially in close. Just keep spin attack up, even if you're losing the round, the job will be worth it. In round two, their shield will be gone, from the constant spin attacks-- when the spin is charged in close, it can obliterate the shield with one hit--the guard is worn away. So in round two they can only sidestep, which the computer doesn't do often." b. Miles "Tails" Prower SPECIALTY: Propeller Dash MOVES Propeller Dash R Propeller Dash L Kiddy Punch Spin Attack Airplane Drop* Dodging Punch Squash Punch Stamp Dive Push Away c. Knuckles the Echidna SPECIALTY: Knuckle Glider MOVES One-Two-Uppercut* Body Dive Dodging Punch Knuckles Special Push Away Spin Attack Foot Trample Uppercut d. Amy Rose SPECIALTY: Magical Hammer MOVES Hey! What's that?* Hammer Dive Head Sliding Hammer Spin Hip Attack Vaulting Horse* Dodging Hammer e. Espio the Chameleon SPECIALTY: Tongue Attack MOVES Tongue Toss* Long-range tounge* Espio Chop Whirling Attack (Espio Spin Attack) Backhand Slap Dash Tongue Back Toss* Tongue Throw* Dodging Tongue Attack TIP ON USING ESPIO (by wayne_steed[at]yahoo.com "Wayne Steed") "When fighting against Fang on the Casino Night stage, I found that Espio's Whirling Attack deflects Fang's popgun's bullets." f. Fang the Sniper SPECIALTY: Popgun MOVES Rapid Shoot Great Popgun Tail Combination Horse Kick Tail Spring Kick* Tail Down Attack* Tail Throw* Dodging Shoot g. Bark the Polarbear SPECIALTY: Throw MOVES Triple Squash Punch Holding Punch Giant Swing* Bark Strike Knock Down Throw Stamp and Hook One-Two-Throw* Guard Walk Dodging Punch h. Bean the Dynamite SPECIALTY: Bomb Attack MOVES Rapid Peck Shoot Bomb Throw Bomb Power Uppercut Terrific Peck Attack* Dash Peck Super Peck* Dodging Attack i. Super Sonic SPECIALTY: Super Spin Attack NOTE: Super Sonic is only accessible in Round 2 against Metal Sonic. Before that can happen, you have to defeat every single opponent without losing a single round. No, it's not easy. MOVES Unknown 8. Boss Characters and their specialties a. Metal Sonic SPECIALTY: All MOVES Unknown b. Dr. Robotnik SPECIALTY: None NOTE: A bonus round. You have to beat him in under 15 seconds. Otherwise, it's a game over. MOVES Unknown 9. Game Basics -By default, there are two rounds, both lasting 50 seconds each. When time runs out, the player who has the highest amount of health wins. -If both players get a KO, then it's a draw. If this happens in the final round of the stage, Sudden Death will occur. Your health is already really low on this part and so will the opponent, so it wouldn't be wise to fool around. -Health is three colors. Green means you're in great condition. Yellow is a warning sign. Red means you're on the point of getting pounded. KOs happen when your health is depleted (of course). -There is a Punch (P), Kick (K), and Barrier (B) button. The CPU often uses Barriers, but there are some moves (like Spin Attack) that can destroy them. Once all Barriers are destroyed, the character can't guard against attacks until the next stage. -If a character uses an attack that sends you flying, you can land back on your feet by pressing P+K+B. P+K+B is also handy to dodge attacks. -To use the Hyper Power, push the joystick to the left and press the P and K button at the same time. You'll know you got it up and running if stars form around your character. The catch is that you'll be sacrificing a barrier if you use it. 10. Arenas and Strageties a. South Island Difficulty: Easy Opponent: Knuckles Chaos Emerald: Red Stragety: Strangely, Knuckles is a pushover. This is a great place to try out your basic moves. b. Flying Carpet Difficulty: Easy Opponent: Amy Rose Chaos Emerald: Pink Stragety: Nothing too much to worry about. Amy's just slightly better than Knuckles, but she shouldn't give you too much of a problem. c. Aurora Icefield Difficulty: Medium Opponent: Bark Chaos Emerald: Yellow Stragety: This guy's a bit tough. The only thing you have to worry about is his Triple Squash Punch and his various throws. Other than that, you'll finish him off in no time flat. d. Mushroom Hill Difficulty: Medium Opponent: Espio Chaos Emerald: Dark Purple Stragety: Another challenge. Espio will often use Espio Chop, so watch out for that. However, he and Bark are nothing compared to Metal Sonic. e. Canyon Cruise Difficulty: Medium Opponent: Tails Chaos Emerald: Orange Stragety: If you don't know how to use the basic moves well, you'll have a rough time here. Tails also likes to use Airplane Drop, and there's no way to escape that. f. Casino Night Difficulty: A little harder than the first 5 Opponent: Fang Chaos Emerald: Light Purple Stragety: Your biggest worry here is Fang's popgun. And it doesn't make you feel any better that he uses it often (though you can deflect the shots with Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles's Spin Dash). He also uses barriers a lot, so break 'em all and avoid the popgun so you can show him what's what. g. Dynamite Plant Difficulty: Medium Opponent: Bean Chaos Emerald: Green Stragety: Look out for this guy's bombs! Bean often uses Hyper Power, which cuts out your work for you since he loses a barrier. Bash Bean when you get the chance and you'll be fine. h. Giant Wing Difficulty: Most of the time medium Opponent: Sonic Chaos Emerald: Blue Stragety: If you thought Tails and Nack were hard, get ready. Sonic seems to read your tricks and often uses Quick Toss when you get close to him. Look out when he uses the Dizzy Spin Attack! Not only you won't be able to move while he's doing it, but you'll take damage by falling on the ground. This is just preparing you for the next stage... But before that, a cutscene plays with your character in the Lunar Fox, heading toward the Death Egg II. Now, get ready to battle... i. Death Egg's Eye Difficulty: Hard Opponent: Metal Sonic Chaos Emerald: None Metal Sonic. This guy makes all stages 3-8 look easy! Metal Sonic can really whoop you if you're not careful. Worse yet, he does this weird attack where sticks his arms out, spins clockwise, and bashes you against the wall. Throw in the fact that he has a laser and you got a tough opponent. It won't be easy taking him out. After you beat Metal Sonic, a message appears saying that the Death Egg II will explode in 30 seconds...and counting. You're on a moving platform, and when you're at the bottom, guess who you'll run into? Robotnik! You use the power of the Chaos Emeralds and the final battle begins (despite what the game tells you)... j. Robotnik's Hangar Difficulty: Not extremely hard Opponent: Robotnik Chaos Emerald: None Robotnik only has a triple punch combo and a throw, but if you keep on thrashing him, you'll knock him out. Congratulations! You've beaten the game! After you beat Robotnik, your character flies the Lunar Fox as the Death Egg II explodes. Then your character heads back to Earth. Then the Credits roll as you watch replays of your victories in the second or third round of each stage. After the credits are done, Robotnik (in a spaceship) waves his arms in anger and flies away. Metal Sonic follows. 11. Some stuff on Sonic Championship -There is a OST that has the music of the aracde game. The tracks are: 1. Advertise (K.I.Y.O.) 2. Character Select (Get Into The Wave 2) 3. Game Start (Are You Ready?) 4. South Island (Lovers) 5. Flying Carpet (Back To Soul) 6. Aurora Icefield (Black Bed) 7. Mushroom Hill (Come On, Mr. Sonic) 8. Canyon Cruise (Blue Garden) 9. Mission Complete (Egg's Fanfare) 16. Super Sonic (Everything) 17. Sonic vs Knuckles (North Wind) 18. You Are Winner (Winner's Fanfare) 19. Name Entry (What's Your Name?) 20. Ending Theme (Take Me Away) 21. Continue (Continue) 22. Game Over (Game Over) 23. Character Select (Bonus Track 1) 24. Sunset Town (Bonus Track 2) -Bark and Bean appeared as hidden characters in the Saturn game "Fighters Megamix". -Track 24, "Sunset Town" is for a level that didn't make it in the game. -In the opening sequence, Robotnik's name is spelled "Robotnic". -Bark is the only character in the game that can't squat. -If you play a VS. game where one player is Sonic and the other is Knuckles, the BGM will be Sonic vs Knuckles (North Wind) regardless of the stage. This music also plays at the Robotnik bonus round. -Believe it or not, due to the game's lack of popularity, I decided to make a fanfic (called it a "fan cartoon" at the time, though) series called "Wacky World Adventures" staring the characters of the game (except Metal Sonic and Robotnik). Unfortunately, it's no longer around since I took the site down in around 2003. However, I do have fanfiction that continue its legacy in some form. If you want to gather some details about 'em, feel free look at my LiveJournal (http://lil-ida.livejournal.com/). -In 2005, the game was made available in Sonic Gems Collection for the GameCube and PS2! Differences aren't major except for the music (the extended CD versions are used for the stages and track 23 is used for the menu) -A yellow cat named Honey was a scrapped character for the game. However, she can be played by hacking the game. She challenger picture will be Eggman, and she's said fight like Knuckles. Well, that ends the FAQ.
