I.  INTRO AND NOTES
-------------------

Mario Bros. was the first game to feature the infamous duo, Mario and Luigi.
The arcade version was released in 1983, although the first version game out
on the Atari 2600. Two years before the initial release of the popular Super
Mario Brothers on the NES, there was this game. This is where Mario and Luigi
get their plumbing origins from.

The game takes place in a sewer and Mario and Luigi must rid the area of all
the pesky things roaming around in the pipes. After the enemies in a phase
have been kicked aside, the team moves on to another area, and every once in
a while a new enemy is introduced.

Mario Bros. was a common arcade game and was featured in arcades all across
the U.S. in the early 80s. Forefather to later Mario games, Mario Bros. was a
big step in the gaming world and is quite a fun game still today. So, sit
back and take a ride through the past to a world where fat Italian plumbers
cleared sewers from turtles, crabs, and other nefarious creatures, Mario
Bros.

II.  VERSION HISTORY
--------------------

Check back here later for updates and that sort of thing.

v. 1.0 - April 12, 2003
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Work on this FAQ started on April 12, 2003. The first, basic version of the
guide, v. 1.0 should cover all aspects in the game and not much should need
to be added. But, in the event that I miss something, e-mail me at
kader3@msn.com with anything you think should be posted here. Chances are I
will throw it in here, while crediting you with the info, of course. ;)
V. 1.1 - April 18, 2003
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A certain Fane e-mailed me with some minor grammar corrections. Thanks for the
info!

IV.  ENEMIES
------------

There are three enemies in the game, each one unique. A description and what
phases they are found in is provided below.

SHELLCREEPER
============
Phases: 1, 2, 5
Description: Shellcreeper is a slow-moving turtle and is the most common
             enemy in the game. To defeat him, simply hit the part of the
             platform that is beneath him and then jump onto that platform
             and run into him (kick him). Hitting the platform beneath him a
             second time will cause him to quickly hop back into his shell
             and be on his way. If, after hitting him the first time, you
             wait too long to kick him off the side, he will get up, and put
             his shell back on. This time, though, it will be purple instead
             of green and he will move faster than before. Do this again and
             his shell will become red and he will move even faster yet.

SIDESTEPPER
===========
Phases: 4, 5
Description: A crab with an attitude. The first time you hit the platform
             under him, he gets mad and continues on his way moving faster
             than before (not to mention the sour look on his face). The
             second time he will flip over, allowing you to knock him off the
             side. Like the Shellcreeper, if you flip him over and wait too
             long to hit him, he will get back up, and this time he will be
             a blue color and faster than before. The second time you do this
             to him, he turns purple and becomes incredibly fast He will also
             hop back up if you hit him a third time. The Sidestepper is
             faster than the other two main enemies when he first comes out
             from the pipe.

FIGHTERFLY
===========
Phases: 6, 7
Description: This fly will hop around the screen, and the only way to hit him
             is from the platform beneath him, like the others. But, he must
             be on the ground when you actually hit him. Then you can go up
             and knock him off the side. Hitting him and then hitting the
             platform a second time will cause him to flip upright and go on.
             If you hit the platform but wait too long to hit him, he will
             jump back up, and all of his hops will be quicker and farther.

RED FIREBALL
============
Phases: All
Description: The red fireball usually appears at the top of the screen and
             floats around the screen, moving passively. Every time it bumps
             into something, it changes its path, so watch out. The red
             fireball can be defeated, and it's the same way as the others.
             Hit the platform beneath him and he will disappear.

GREEN FIREBALL
==============
Phases: All
Description: Green fireballs appear at the sides of the screen and quickly
             float across to the other side, and then they disappear. They
             usually appear later in the phase, and sometimes there can be
             many in a row. Same as the red fireball, the green fireball can
             be destroyed by bumping the platform beneath it, but only when
             it is directly over it, basically touching it.

*NOTE* The last enemy left in the phase (excluding a fireball) will become
purple when all other enemies are defeated. Any fireballs on the screen at
the time all enemeies are defeated will disappear, and it is not necassary to
destroy them.

V.  PHASES
----------
This section clearly describes the basic phase in the game, a list of phases,
and what enemies are found in that phase.
*NOTE* This section is missing some phase descriptions, so e-mail me at
kader3@msn.com with any info you have, and I'll be sure to credit you in the
next update.

THE BASIC PHASE
***************
The basic phase in the game looks like this:
                        ___                       ___
                ------ |  _|                     |_  | ------
              /        |O|                         |O|        \
             /         -------------     -------------         \
            /                                                   \
Enemies (re)enter phase       -----------------        Enemies (re)enter phase
  Enemies exit phase ---- ---- Enemies exit phase
            \                                                   /
             \         -----------   POW   -----------         /
              \        ___                         ___        /
                ------ ___|____X__________________|___ ------

                              /
                            Start

BASICS
******
Some things you need to know about each phase.

Completion
----------
You complete a phase when all enemies have been defeated, excluding
fireballs.

POW
---
The POW is an object found in the center of the stage that when hit can turn
over (or anger Sidesteppers) every enemy in the phase that is currently on
the ground. However, each phase shares the same POW, and when all three hits
have been used, the POW is gone for the rest of the game, so use it wisely.

Coins
-----
Each time an enemy is defeated, a coin comes out of one of the pipes. Get it
for an easy 800 points. You can also collect the coin by bumping the platform
beneath it.

PHASES
******
A list of the phases and what enemies are found in them.

Phase 1
=======
Enemies: Shellcreeper
Description: There are three Shellcreepers in this stage, and it is probably
             the easiest phase in the game. There is no need for the POW
             here, so don't bother.

Phase 2
=======
Enemies: Shellcreeper
Description: Phase 2 is the same as Phase 1, but with more enemies. Again,
             don't use the POW yet.

Phase 3 (Bonus)
===============
Enemies: None
Description: This is a bonus phase where you try to collect as many coins as
             possible in 16 seconds. When time is up, the level is over, or
             the level ends when you collect all of the coins. If you do
             collect all of them (there are 10), you are awarded a bonus
             5000 points.

Phase 4
=======
Enemies: Sidestepper
Description: Phase 4 ups the difficulty a bit because Sidesteppers take two
             hits to flip over and they move faster than Shellcreepers. You
             still shouldn't use the POW yet, but if you absolutely must...

Phase 5
=======
Enemies: Shellcreeper, Sidestepper
Description: The first phase to feature more than one type of enemy in it.
             You might want to use the POW as eventually the level becomes
             nearly flooded with enemies.

Phase 6
=======
Enemies: Fighterfly
Description: The first stage to have the Fighterfly inhabit it, Phase 6 is
             a little less difficult than Phase 5, but Fighterflies can be
             a nuisance. The POW will have little or no effect here because
             enemies must be on the ground in order for it to do anything,
             and half the time Fighterflies are not.

Phase 7
=======
Enemies: Sidestepper, Fighterfly
Description: Things really start getting tough now. Fighterflies and
             Sidesteppers inhabit this level and the POW comes in handy the
             most here. Use it to your advantage and time your hits
             carefully.

There are many levels missing, I know, and I will add them in the next
update. For now, any info would be nice <kader3@msn.com>.

VI.  2 PLAYER
-------------

The 2 Player game is the same as one player, but with Mario and Luigi
instead of just Mario. It is simultaneous gameplay, and both players work
together to make it through the game. Also, you must have at least two
credits to play 2 Player. Below are character descriptions and some more on
playing dual.

MARIO
=====
Mario is controlled by the first player and is the main character in the
game. Before he was involved in rescuing princesses, saving worlds, and
destorying evil Koopas, he was a simple plumber with a modest job: cleaning
sewers. But, the sewers here have more problems that just being filthy and
plugged up. Someone has let loose tons of enemies who are causing trouble in
the sewer system and it is Mario's job to rid the sewer of these creatures.

LUIGI
=====
Mario's brother, Luigi is also a plumber and shares the goal of Mario. He is
controlled by player 2 and he and Mario are identical in every way, except
that Luigi is dressed in green.

 - Work together to destroy the monsters and get through the game.
 - Have one person cover the bottom half of the screen, to get any enemies
   the other player may miss, and have that other player at the top, taking
   on enemies as they come.
 - Try to stay out of each others way, unless it's in an attempt to grab
   coins.  ;)
