The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest
Review by Undeniable
""FUUYA" Throwing people 6 feet in the air never felt so good."
I cannot, I simply cannot, not write a review for the game that has countlessly sucked the time away from me in a pure movement of joy. For you new to the King of Fighters series, I suggest starting here, but be careful, I did, and I still sing its praises. So follow my word as I tell you a tale of the year of '98, and the beauty that brought us.
Graphics 9/10
Well true, even back then, SNK sprites were a bit dated, (BTW, they're still using these sprites in XI) but the always do, but who cares about graphics? If you did, why would you be playing SNK games? The point is, the sprites, while dated, still hold a beautiful charm and animation, and the backgrounds look wonderful, what else could you ask for?
Sound 10/10
If I could give it more, I would, as this is one of the things that sold me to the KoF franchise in the first place, the wonderful music. Taking the masterpieces directed in past years and combining them into one for a stunning soundtrack is what more fighters need. The detail of the OST is only matched by the ever wonderful AST that is present in most SNK games. Take a look around next time you're on the net, take a look at the music, marvel before SNK's might. Take the time next time you play a match, to listen to the sounds overtake you, find yourself listening yo light Jazz while in the middle of a stormy match, or soothing Guitar next match. SNK went to the brakes to give it to you, enjoy it, please.
Gameplay 10/10
Oh sweet merciful SNK, please bless us with another game with such balance as present in '98. Everything seems to be accounted for, balance wise. Why, even the boss has been nerfed (Albeit, too much) into balance, just for all us Rugal fans. True some issue exist *Glares at Goro*, but keeping it down to not for formal play, we see a rich, balanced fighter. With a heavy roster, this could be tough, but SNK found a way to make it possible. With 38 characters, (Not including secret, yet still balanced) you really are treated to a vast field of play styles, including my favorite, grappler's.
There you have it, short, but hopefully sweet, I tell you my view of '98, and hope that you consider it next time you look for your "Legal games." I've spent many a night withered away at this game, I would love for you to do the same.
