LadyBug
Review by Kurushimi
"It's Pac-Man taken to a whole new level."
Graphics: 6 - Even though it was released in 1981, Lady Bug's graphics didn't quite meet up to the standards of that in other games of its time such as Donkey Kong or Galaga. Many of the sprites are only composed of one or two bright colors and the ladybug itself doesn't really look like a ladybug at all. However, they are still acceptable.
Sound Effects: 5 - The sound in this game is almost complete crap. Low-quality music and some shrill sound effects may turn off a few gamers, so get your earplugs ready if you happen to find someone nearby playing a cabinet of this game.
Gameplay: 10 - This is where Lady Bug truly shines. Think the pellet-eating formula of Pac-Man with new strategies and bonuses added. To start with, you have green walls disconnected from the rest of the stage and linked to the floor by a pink peg. Enemies cannot cross these walls, but if the player presses up against them, they will spin into another direction (horizontal to vertical and vice-versa), allowing for a bit of thinking when it comes to getting enemies off your tail. In addition, there are collectable letters and hearts scattered throughout which provide points and added extras if grabbed when they are the right color. For instance, if you grab the letter A when it is red, it will be added to the word ''SPECIAL'' in the upper-left hand corner of the screen. It's quite challenging to get all the letters to the word ''SPECIAL'' or ''EXTRA'' since the colors constantly change and you have enemies chasing you around. If you can manage to get them all, though, you're in for a treat. The one complaint I have is that the play control can be a pain in the ass on occasion, but with so much fun packed into one cabinet, it's easy to look past this.
Replay Value: 10 - A truly addicting and entertaining experience. With players constantly wanting to beat the high score, you'll just want to keep coming back. It's that fun.
Overall Score: 8 - Constructing this game, Universal tried to capture the fun gameplay and addicting experience of Pac-Man, the game that inspired its creation, but failed miserably. Instead, it went and took the system to a whole new level. If you can look past the slightly outdated graphics and low-quality sound, you too will make this game one of your all-time favorites.
