Vapor TRX

Review by CasaDeJoey

"Even GameFAQs has never heard of it!"

And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just because no one's heard of it, doesn't make it a bad game, now does it? Vapor TRX is a lot of fun when you get right down to it, much better than HyperDrive, but lacks the quality of Wipe Out.

You drive a gravity-defying jet bike accross a large course with power-ups and opponent racers flying all accross the screen. Like HyperDrive, you can fly high or low, unlike HyperDrive, Vapor TRX is fun for more than five minutes. In actuality, it's fun for a lot longer than that.

As with a few other racers out there, getting first place in two or three courses will grant you a secret track to race. However, since this game doesn't have a name and password entry anywhere to be found, you can't save your game and come back to it later, forcing you to spend a lot of money (and time) on this game all in one sitting.

This may not bother some gamers, but it bothered me. GameWorks is expensive, and I can't afford to go there every week, so when I do get there, I want to play more than one game. I would never spend my whole time at GameWorks playing just one racing game. That would be a total waste.

Gameplay: 7
Vapor TRX plays very well. It may not thrill everyone, and isn't the type of game that will hold your interest too long, but it's definitely a game you'll want to check out, if not just for the fun of blasting away your opponents and racing to the finish line in first place.

Sound/Music: 5
The sound of power-ups and missles blazing accross the screen are nice, but the overall lack of music kind of makes me wonder... did this game start out with such a bad sounding soundtrack that they just threw it out the window, or did it never have one to begin with? If I rated them seperately, the sound would get a six and music would get a one.

Graphics: 7
3Dfx, other than Blitz '99 and Voodoo 3, never really impressed me that much, and neither does Vapor TRX. The graphics are very shiney and nice, much faster and smoother animation than HyperDrive, but the problem is, even though this game plays different from the rest, it looks like almost every 3Dfx-equiped racer out there. Overall a nice game to look at and play, especially if you don't mind not having anything new (graphically).

Replayability: 2
I think replay value brings down most of the great games out there. Even House of Dead 2, as great as it is, just isn't as fun to play through more than once as Time Crisis 2 is. Yeah, I did enjoy HoD2 a lot, and I still play it almost everytime I go to GameWorks, but one game a month is good enough for me. Unfortunately, Vaport TRX, once its beat, isn't really needed for one more game...ever.

Should I buy Vapor TRX?: No.
As great a game as this is, Vapor TRX isn't something you'd want in your game room, and probably not something you'd want in your arcade either. Not too many people played it at GameWorks, and there, everyone tries everything at least once, newbies.
