Rygar
Review by SBrainfreeze
"The legendary battle yo-yo man strides forth and defeats his enemies."
Rygar, Rygar, Rygar.... this is classic stuff right here. A man, his yo-yo, his oppressors... oh yes. The stuff that dreams are made of. Allow me to explain. The original arcade version of Rygar had you, as a little guy, running across the screen, killing things. This isn't so special unless you consider the point system, which makes the game. Unlike most games of its type, Rygar isn't as much about clearing the level as beating the high score. The game runs on a time limit, so that you can't stay around for hours beating on the enemies for a high score. Also to prevent staying on the level, the clock goes fastest when you're moving backwards, and slowest going forwards. The amount of time left on the clock determines a point bonus at the end of the stage. There are numerous weapons in the game. A couple of these are rather useless. The score system is what forces you to grab them, for you see, if you grab all of them [requiring beating many, many levels on one life] you get an ungodly amount of points which happens to boost the high score greatly. And that's what the game is about, and therein lies its addictiveness. You can always look at that score and say "I can do way better than that!!" That's a lot of the appeal of the classics. Except this game is like no other classic. It's a combination of the old NES game where you kill stuff, a shooter, and a pinball game. It has terrible English! It's got everything! It's... indescribable unless you play it. But it rules, let me tell you.
