Galaga
Review by Joepie
"Just Space Invaders, but better."
In the old days, when games weren't around too long, there were ALOT of games of one particular génre: Space shoot 'em up. Yes. Aside from tennis games (Pong) and puzzle games (Pac-man), this was really the main génre. After all, the very first videogame WAS a Space shoot 'em up! It was titled ''Computer Space'' I belive (could also've been ''Space Wars'', I'm not sure). It had alot of spaceships, aliens and action, but the public didn't like it. The second game that appeared was Pong, but this game was a big HIT though.
So while there really were alot of Space shoot 'em up's, I've only played two of 'em: the classic Missile Command and this. Galaga. Every company made Space shoot 'em up's these days, and so did Namco, the company that MUCH later created the infamous Tekken series. So they made this. Galaga. And here's my review on it.
GRAPHICS - 4/5
The graphics were pretty good, and while I haven't ever played Space Invaders, I know from screenshots that this game's graphics are much better. Better use of colours, better designed spaceships and aliens, the list goes on. The animation also goes smooth, luckily. So while the graphics aren't groundbreaking enough for the 5/5 rating, they're good enough for the 4/5.
MUSIC/SOUND - 4/5
Well, I haven't got much to say about this. Nice music, and a good amount of sounds. No Beethoven's Fifth in here, so no 5/5, but again, it's good enough for the 4/5.
GAMEPLAY - 4,5/5
So in the beginning, the game's pretty boring. Shoot at enemies, and they don't shoot back. But later they DO shoot back, and there arrive more spaceships as the game develops. There are eight levels, and it's get a bit more difficult with each level. I myself, actually, never managed to come to level 8! And I'm not such a bad gamer (at least I think...).
Anyway, the game's once again a deal of once you begin you can't stop. The game becomes more difficult, but more fun to play too. I'm still trying to beat the game up to today, trying to get to level 8.
Also, there's a multiplayer mode. Playing the game with a friend is even better! Overall, the gameplay is good enough to get a 4,5/5.
OVERALL - 8/10
So what's the deal with Galaga? Well, it's Space Invaders but better, and that's it. Not a groundbreaking game in the world of Old School Space shoot 'em up's, but a GOOD game nonetheless. Go play it. Unless you DETESTE Old School Space shoot 'em up's of course.
So that's it. Next time I'll review one of my favourite Arcade games: Spy Hunter! Be there.
