Battle Balls
Review by T T Ray
"A strange and addictive puzzler, where you can play as a jello mold. Really."
I doubt anyone will stumble onto this review, but I'm writing it for the intrepid explorers of GameFAQs,those who have actually seen the game, and for myself, whom wanted to write this review. Well, this game is a puzzler. The kind you play at the arcade because Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is taken and you either loathe/or suck at DanceDanceRevolution. On to the actual review:
Story: The story is about some strange inhabitants of some island, and they are at war. To win, they must throw marbles at each other. Once they figure out who is the best marble thrower, they must fight the champion marble throwers,Mr. T,Dr. Evil, and Carrot Top.
Well, actually, that's not the story, since apparently this game has none. Remember, this is a puzzle game. I'll list the characters though, since this is the best place to do it. First off is some spiky haired ninja kid. Then there's a girl,a raccoon, what looks like an octopus, and some guy with spiral glasses. To round out the ''cute anime puzzle characters'' is the Jello Mold. If you can't stand that kind of character(I'm with you, buddy),you can also play as the Ninja Raven or a dragon.
Story/Characters: 6/10,not that it matters all that much.
Graphics: The graphics are a lot like Tetris Attack. The world map is some island with different elements to it,and the characters are brightly colored. Not blindingly colorful, but they're bright enough for you to notice. Your character, who is in the background of your playing field, has different expressions, whether he's been hit by a large barrage of marbles,or if he's just beat the opponent. This does distract you sometimes;when the octopus gets a sweatdrop,it looks like a game piece. Otherwise, the graphics look good.
Graphics: 8/10
Play Control: The play control is great. There's just the Rotate piece button, and the joystick. Unless the arcade's joystick is busted, you should be fine.
Play Control: 10/10
Gameplay: The game is yet another Tetris remake, just like Columns,Tetris Attack,or Super Puzzle Fighter. What's it like this time, you ask? Well, you get multi-colored marbles in groups of three. They're not like Tetris, where they are horizontal and vertical, they come down in a triangle formation. Rotating it allows you to get four colors in a row, thus getting rid of any junk and clearing out space,or allows it to land differently. This was a nice touch;if the marbles drop pointing down, they'll split up;should they drop flat, they'll stay like that(unless the surface is uneven). If you fill up your playing field all the way over, you lose. Just like in any other tetris clone. As you progress through levels, the pace gets faster. VERY fast. It will go down if you're playing solitaire mode, but if you're fighting the CPU,it won't go down. You can also compete against your friends. What's an arcade game without multi-player?
Gameplay: 8/10
Music/Sound: The music can be rather annoying and repetitive. It plays only one track, and it's a very annoying one. If you're lucky,it'll get drowned out by surrounding arcade games. The sound is hardly noticeable. There is some voicework for the three human characters, but it is indistinguishable.
Music and Sound: 5/10
Replay: If you like the fast pace and game mechanics, you'll be coming back, perhaps with friends. It's a puzzle game, and it's a good one. It won't tire easily.
Replay: 9/10
Buy/Pay/ROM? Buying an arcade console is ridiculous,so just stick to paying. if you can find a Nickel Arcade or an arcade with free games in the back,go for that.
Overall: 7,the only bad points are the music. A good puzzler if you can find it.Try it if you get bored with Marvel vs. Capcom.
