Robotron: 2084

Review by EJM

"The pure adrenaline of this game makes it still fun today."

Graphics-5

The graphics are bad, but the game was released in the early eighties, and no games had graphics that stand up today.

Sound-7

There is no music in the game, but it isn't missed. The sound effects are good. The zapping sounds for lasers and the sound for destroying your enemies sounds great. One annoying thing is the sound that the enemy robots make while they chase you.

Gameplay-10

The gameplay is so simple, but it's just a thing of art. I've read in an interview with the guy who made the game that one of the things that makes Robotron so good is the fact that when you die, you know it's your fault. And that's true. In the game, it's you against tons of enemies, sometimes the whole screen full. This game is pure adrenaline.

Extras-6

The programmer's names can be found by moving the joysticks in a certain pattern. There is also a trick to make the brain enemies ignore all but one human. Actually, it's not a trick, but a bug. In the Williams Arcade Classics game for PC and consoles, there is an explanation of this.

Overall-10

This game is still fun to play today. I know I can beat that last score, just one more try…
