The Ocean Hunter

Review by MrSkip

"Wow, the secerts of the deep can be deadly."

We all know Sega right? A stupid question on my part but of course you do. They're the people who brought us Sonic and the thrill of speed when playing with him. They give Nintendo something to worry about back in the 16 bit era and also were one the masters when it came to arcades, especially shooters which bring us to the topic of this review. After having there fill of cops and zombies (am refering to Virta Cop and House of the Dead). The good folks at Sega decided to explore another setting in there shooter genre. This time moving it away from the spooky cities and into the deep blue of the sea. Your occupation: treasure hunters, Your enemies: The wrath of the Seven oceans. Welcome to Ocean Hunter.

Skinny/ ''Theres treasure in them 8,000 leagues under the sea''
Starts off in the past where ships sailed some rather unpleasent uncharted oceans where they were attacked by some huge monsters of the deep. After awhile bounties were put on there creatures, now playing as two underwater treasure hunters. You must brave these oceans and risk you life to go after these underwater meances as well as the moolah in the sunken ships and lost monuments. Think you can handle it?

Play Dials/ ''Let's see I just aim and shoot with this lever here and a spear comes out. Right? OOPS! Sorry teacher.''
Your controls are basiclly a yellow looking spear shooter which you can fire by pressing on the triggers on the handles. Easy to aim it with the crosshairs on the screen and rumbles a little when you fire it. Though the 1 second pauses when you run of of ammo in the middle of shooting an enemy can get a little annoying.

Core/ (JAWS THEME PLAYING WHILE DIVERS LOOK AROUND SUDDENLY A SHADOW APPEARS BEHIND THEM) ''Look out! It the killer..Lobsters?''
Yes indeed Lobsters are one of many ocean life you have to go up against as you fight for treasure and survival. Other include sea serpents, sharks (very common enemy by the way), digestive cells in the inside of a huge fish (no kidding), piranhas, barracudas, mythical creatures and anything else Sega was able to come with after watching National Geographic. You shoot you way through each stage sometimes rescuing other divers from being lunch (yes, the hostage penalty can also count under the sea too) eventually facing off against one of the masters of the seven seas. These consist of hitting them in a certain spot to keep from hurting you such as eyes or arms. If you've every played The Lost World you should get the drift. Being a crosshair game you think you can just breeze right through it. Though the swarms of sharks and marine life that come after you will proabaly make you think other wise. Bring quarters and lots of em if your going all the way.

Eye-candy/ ''Am blue da da de da da do da...Ah forget it''
It underwater most of te time what do you expect to see? Some good details here and there especially on the bosses. The landscapes could've used a little work but noting to really gripe at.

Noise/ ''WHAT! I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE CALM OF THE OCEAN!''
And that ''calm'' was my nosiy bowling center where I played this at. Couldn't get a a sound in edgewise in the clutter of bowling pins and other arcade games going on around me. So no comment on this subject.

Final Quip: Good game by Sega and worth the quarters and playtime though you really got to work to reach the end ( I sure haven't). It won't top HOD as Sega top shooter but it a good addition. Check it out if you find it and thats all from me in this review. CHO!
