30 May 2003: Version 0.36
-------------------------
Playtested Version 0.35 of the guide, everything seems to be great so far! :D

Put a new question in the "Frequently Asked Questions" section of the guide,
the answer to which lists all of the differenced between this version of the
game and the NES one (which I believe was identical to the Commodore 64 version
of the game - slightly superior to the original Spectrum version but not the
best quality release of this game). In general, it's the names and appearances
of the items that were altered.

Actually, that's just a placeholder, because I haven't done it yet.

Played through the game; now I know what every single item is used for... but
I'm still missing 2 of the 30 coins in the game!! In essence, what I need to
do now is type up the rest of the walkthrough (which should be plain sailing
from here on, seeing as I know my way through the entire game and can do it
at speed), then as soon as I get my hands on those last elusive coins, this
document should be complete.

This version of the guide will be submitted to GameFAQs, and to the right
address this time, too! ^_^;; Expect the next update to be a big one.

29 May 2003: Version 0.35
-------------------------
Added the petition info to the "History" information below, and drew an ASCII
representation of the game's first screen to clear up any misunderstandings
between myself and the reader. I won't be using any more ASCII art in this
walkthrough from here on.

Did a large chunk of the walkthrough (10 out of the 30 coins in the game), and
started the item usage and coin location lists. Also split the walkthrough up
into easily-digestible sections with item and coin "checks" to make sure that
you haven't skipped ahead when reading and missed something out.

Also added complete (well, until somebody can submit more questions/codes)
versions of the "Frequently Asked Questions" and "Cheat Codes" portions of the
guide, along with the final segment of this document - which contains contact
and legal information.

Now I can get to work on the more major parts of the guide; the walkthrough
section and the listings.

28 May 2003: Version 0.02
-------------------------
The first version submitted to GameFAQs - may not be accepted because I forgot
to put legal info at the bottom of the guide, AND sent it to the wrong address.
Not the best start I've ever made to a walkthrough. -_-;;

Drew the ASCII images of a joystick and Mega Drive/Genesis controller, and
basically finished of Section 2 of the guide, previously labelled Section 1.

27 May 2003: Version 0.01
-------------------------
The FAQ is created, a section list is made and the ASCII header is put
together. Wrote the "History Behind the Series" section.

=====================================
i) History behind the Dizzy series
=====================================

Treasure Island Dizzy is the second in a renowned series of Platform/Puzzle
hybrid games that came from an English company called CodeMasters in the late
1980s. CodeMasters are probably best known these days for the TOCA games on the
PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles, and seem to have (unfortunately)
totally abandoned these games featuring their premier mascot.

Why? Because, at heart, Dizzy games NEED to be 2D in order to "work"... much
like, it could be argued, the platform game genre. Many old-skool gamers would
probably spit their coffee out all over their Vectrex systems and ZX Spectrums
at the mere mention of a possible return of the eggy wonder on a newer 2D-based
portable games machine such as the GameBoy Advance, PSP, N-Gage, or GP32! The
only problem with this prospect would be the cost of the cartridge; the Dizzy
games weren't very large and so if the character was to appear on a new 2D
format, it'd either have to be one heck of a large game or some sort of
compilation cartridge featuring every Dizzy outing. Now that WOULD be nice in
today's gaming climate, seeing as we're currently inundated with generic trash
on the PS2, Xbox and GameCube... but I digress. ¬_¬;; If you'd like to see the
return of this great cartoon adventure hero, make your voice heard by signing
Tommy Pereira's petition to CodeMasters at the following URL:

[http://www.petitiononline.com/dizzy/petition.html]

Generally, the Dizzy games were quite difficult (usually because the puzzles
didn't necessarily make sense), and Treasure Island Dizzy is no exception to
this. In fact, playing with a friend sat beside you passing on their ideas
isn't a bad premise at all, and may prove invaluable to your progress should
you decide to tackle an entire Dizzy release. The feeling of satisfaction when
you finally realise that you need a heavy boulder in your inventory to access
the place where you can use the jar of honey is second to none; you've figured
it out using nothing but your own brain power and you can be excused for
scrawling "I am teh 1337!!!" or some similar idiot speak all over your
parents' bedroom wall.

Or rather, you would be excused for such a heinous crime had you not used
this guide. Do you see what I'm getting at here? This walkthrough wasn't
written for you to spoil a great little game - please, PLEASE use it only if
you're well and truly stumped and absolutely can't figure out what to do for
yourself. That's why I've included the item list, so that you can quickly
refer to the puzzle you're stuck at without accidentally catching the solution
to something you haven't done yet as you scroll through the walkthrough. For
this reason, please use Ctrl+F, or F3 if you're reading this in NotePad, and
search for the name of the item in your inventory that you need to find a use
for.

Anyway, now that you're slightly more familiar with what the developers had in
mind for the player's experience of the game when they made it, let's get to
the actual "playing the game" part. It's about time, too. ^_^;;

==================
ii)  The controls
==================

You play this game using a joystick, which must be connected to socket 2 (with
a mouse in port 1, the closest to the disk drive) in order to work correctly.

Now here's a terrible ASCII drawing of a joystick... Please note that all
joystick models differ in size, shape, button colour etc. and that this drawing
was based on an old joystick I used to have - yours will probably look
slightly different, but the controls most likely remain pretty much the same:

                                   ||
                                   ||

                         | \___/ | (Up, Down, Left, Right, Diagonal)
                         |     #| |#     |
                         |     # - #     |
                          \_____________/
                                      ''<----------- Auto-Fire Switch
                                              (Not recommended for this game)

The game can also be played using a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in the USA) pad,
as can any joystick-based Amiga game. If you are using a Mega Drive/Genesis
controller to play the game, the 'B' button works in place of 'Fire'. **

                              ||  Start Button (Not Used)
                              ||  |
                  ____________||__| _______
                 /   _            V      _ \
                |  _| |_         ==   _ |C| |
                | |_ O _|          _ |B<------------- B Button
                | |_| SEGA |A| | (Used in place of 'Fire')
                |                           |
                 \        /-------\        /
                  \______/         \______/

** Throughout this guide, I will refer to the Fire button as 'Fire', simply
due to the fact that the game was originally intended to be played using a
joystick. I don't think that the A and C buttons can be used as an alternative
should you happen to be using a Mega Drive/Genesis controller to play.

==================================
iii)   How to Play/Scoring System
==================================

The aim of the game is to simply escape from the island... however in the long
run, the player finds that it isn't quite such an easy task after all!

Dizzy (the egg-like, boxing-gloves-wearing character that the player assumes
the role of) can carry up to 3 items in his inventory - which is displayed at
the top of the screen - at any one time. To pick up an item, you must first
place Dizzy right in front of it (ie, not next to it) and hit 'Fire' to place
the item in your inventory. Pressing 'Fire' when you are not in front of an
item will cause you to scroll through the list of items you have; when a listed
object is at the top (instead of the word "Nothing") and you press 'Fire', that
item will either be dropped or - if you drop it in the correct place - actually
used, which will give you access to new items or play areas.

Making it to the boat on the game's final screen is difficult enough to do
without cheating as it is, but if you want to TOTALLY complete Treasure Island
Dizzy, then your work is really going to be cut out because you're going to
have to find and collect all 30 of the coins in the game. Which, joy of joys,
tend to be hidden from view until you do something "special" such as press
'Fire' in the correct place to uncover them.

The scoring system is quite easy to get to grips with, as there are only two
ways of earning points in this game:

* Accessing a screen that you haven't been on previously gives 1000 points.
** Picking up one of the aforementioned coins will earn you 500 points.

To help your understanding of the terms used above, here is an ASCII
representation of the very first screen in the game:

As you can see, items that you can interact with tend to be roughly the same
size as Dizzy himself; larger objects are for the most part in the background.
So, as a general rule of thumb, if an item looks like it's too big to store in
the inventory then chances are it probably is. If an object is bigger than
Dizzy and DOESN'T look like a background object, then be careful around it!
It's most likely a trap that, if touched, will send you all the way back to
start of the game!!!

The Adventure Begins
--------------------
Coin Check: 00
Item Check: NOTHING/NOTHING/NOTHING

On the first screen (the one illustrated above), pick up the "AN EMPTY CHEST"
item by pressing 'Fire' when Dizzy is stood in front of it. Ignore the coin
in the water to the right - unless you have the snorkel item in your inventory,
stepping into water spells instant death, and in this game you only get a
single life to go from start to finish! o_o;;

Anyway, take "AN EMPTY CHEST" one screen to the left, then stand on the rocks
and hit 'Fire' until the item is at the top of your inventory list. After that,
press the 'Fire' button one more time and Dizzy will drop the item and stand on
top of it, which grants you access to more westward screens.

On the next screen, you will see what can only be described as a purple hornet
buzzing around. By standing on the small rock (or the group of rocks with a
coin on top of them) and jumping directly upwards into the hornet, the first
hidden coin will be unveiled and will shoot off to the left. Remember to pick
up the coin on this screen (by hitting 'Fire' to pick it up, as you did with
the game's first item) before going off to retrieve it!

When you walk left, be absolutely *certain* not to touch the flames on those
torches on the bridge! Doing so will mean the end of your game!! As long as
that's fixed in your mind, grab the coin you just saw fly over to this screen,
then continue your journey to the left and remember this screen - Hookjaw's
grave - because we're going to be using it as a stashing place a bit later on.
For now, though, you see that bush between the scroll and the tree? Stand in
front of it and press 'Fire' to uncover a very elusive secret coin (which, by
my calculations, should be your third). Next, head left once more to come to a
screen with an out-of-reach purple hornet, along with the not-so common orange
hornet, which will reverse the controls horizontally for a couple of minutes if
you happen to touch it, so don't! If you do accindentally touch the orange
hornet, don't panic. All you have to do is wander back and forth on this screen
for a while until the effects wear off. Anyway, if you stand in front of the
door of the hut on this screen and hit 'Fire', the third hidden coin will
become visible, ready for your collection... and if you walk underneath the
ledge you should now be on, right to the end, you'll find another coin. Lovely.
^_^ Now get back on top of the ledge and head another 2 screens west, back to
the screen you just got that coin from...

The Falling Cages of the Snoggles' Treehouse Complex
----------------------------------------------------
Coin Check: 05
Item Check: NOTHING/NOTHING/NOTHING

...To be faced with a trap. The trick to getting past these is to jump THROUGH
them - if Dizzy's feet touch the ground underneath the trap, it will come down
and you'll have an instant game over. So, what you need to do here is arc a
jump through the trap to land under that ledge to the left - if you position
Dizzy slightly to the left of those purple berries before attempting the jump,
you'll be fine. Go to the next screen, and press the 'Fire' button in front of
the red flowers you see for one of the hardest-to-find coins in the game!

From there, go left again, to a screen with a coin. Hop onto the bottom ledge
and walk up to the top of it, but stay on this screen. Now read this part very
carefully - there's a trap right above the middle of the ledge that the coin's
on, so you can't just walk across the ledge to pick it up. What you're going
to have to do is board the platform from the right-hand edge (just tap the
joystick up/left upon entering the screen), then step a little bit to the right
and make a second jump across the platform - thus avoiding the trap - in order
to reach the coin. Now pick it up, and you should have 7 coins. If not, why
not? Go back and get the ones you've missed before you regret it, you lazy
so-and-so.

Next, jump back from the position of the seventh coin to the right-hand
edge of the platform (thus avoiding the trap, like you did last time). From
there, jump up/right to land on a new ledge that takes you one screen to the
right, then make the next jump up/left to find yourself above the cage trap
that made things difficult for you earlier. If you "knock on" the door of this
treehouse as you did back on the screen with the two differently-coloured
hornets, coin number 8 will become available... so pick it up, you cretin!!!

Exit this screen via the top of the playfield, and get "A HEAVY WEIGHT" from
the screen to the right before coming back and picking up the "A RUBBER
SNORKEL" item that you saw (you should be getting into the swing of things by
now, so I won't waste time telling you where to make the jump from or anything
overly specific like that). Time to head back to the first screen, right?
Wrong. We still have some unfinished business in this area. And we're going to
start off by doing something which may initially seem stupid - take a huge jump
from the left-hand side of the platform that hosted "A RUBBER SNORKEL" in order
to land on an otherwise-inaccessible platform, from which you can collect (yes)
another coin. There's a long way to go yet! :P

The Intricacies of the Forest
-----------------------------
Coin Check: 09
Item Check: NOTHING/A HEAVY WEIGHT/A RUBBER SNORKEL

Return to the screen where you found that very first cage trap, and get
yourself onto the platform above it. What we didn't explore beforehand was the
area of the forest up here! Exit the screen you're on now via the top-left
corner (make a jump off of the screen, you should land on a previously unseen
platform on a new screen). Pick up the coin you see (#10), then go right one
more time to find ANOTHER coin. Be sure to collect that one, too.

Now go back to the screen you were just on, but this time go left. Make a note
of the "hook" on this screen, then follow the platform Dizzy is currently on
all the way to the western end to gain access to coin 12. Get it, fool.

After that little detour, go back to the hook you just saw and use "A HEAVY
WEIGHT" on it; which will make the ledge that the hook is dangling from come
down slightly, granting access to even more of the forest. The fun is almost
too much to bear! (NB: In case you dropped "A RUBBER SNORKEL" when cycling
through the item list, be sure to pick it back up before continuing). What are
you waiting for? Jump onto the newly-lowered platform, and go to the next
screen. Immediately upon entering this screen, you should jump diagonally up
and right. Doing so will plant Dizzy on yet another forest platform. Ignoring
the "REMOTE DETONATOR" item on this screen, head right one and pick up the
"GRAVEDIGGER SPADE"... and then, (from the EDGE of the platform!) leap off to
the right and you'll land on some clouds. See that pogo stick? Follow the
pattern of clouds off-screen to the right, then back to the left, and hit
'Fire' to put "A POGO STICK" in your inventory.

The next thing on your "to-do" list should be going back to the platform that
you lowered by using "A HEAVY WEIGHT", then going right one screen (the one I
told you to immediately jump up/right on) and tapping the joystick up to get a
glimpse of the location of a cage trap. Get past the trap by staying off of the
ground immediately underneath it, then walk two screens to the right to find
yourself on a tiny platform at the bottom of the screen that hosted the
"GRAVEDIGGER SPADE". From the right-hand edge of the platform, make a jump off
to the right and you'll hit the purple hornet that was previously too high to
reach, resulting in a coin flying off to the left. If you didn't hit it, bad
luck, return to the platform and keep trying until you get it. You NEED that
coin. -_-;; If jumping from this position isn't yielding success for you, try
leaping from the platform where you found the eleventh coin instead.

Regardless, pick the hornet coin up, and now - if all's gone according to
plan - you should have a total of 13 in your collection. NOW you can return to
the screen that you started the game on. ^_^

Back to the beginning
---------------------
Coin Check: 13
Item Check: A RUBBER SNORKEL/GRAVEDIGGER SPADE/A POGO STICK

Right, before you enter the water, it might be a good idea to arrange your
items in an order that will prevent you from clumsily dropping "A RUBBER
SNORKEL" while underwater, which would result in an instant kill and the loss
of a decent run. So, on the beach, you should drop each of your items (walk
a little way between drops so you don't pick the item you just dropped back up)
and pick them up in the following order:

* A POGO STICK
* GRAVEDIGGER SPADE
* A RUBBER SNORKEL

If you got the order right, then your inventory list will look just like the
one above.

Now enter the water (at last!) and hit 'Fire' to pick up the coin. Go right a
screen, and remember to WAIT FOR THE FISH TO GO AWAY before continuing down to
the sea bed. The same goes for the jellyfish on this screen - wait for it to
reach the top of its movement pattern before attempting to pass it (hey, you
get one stinkin' life, it's alright to play this game with an overwhelming
sense of paranoia).

On the next screen, jump over the rock formation, stand a little to the right
of the window and jump back to the left, hopefully getting Dizzy to stand on
top of the group of three rocks (this may take a few tries). From that
position, get over to the scroll on the left-hand side of the screen and wait
for the jellyfish to move out of the way before picking up the fifteenth coin.
Now, jump over to the middle section of the screen, where you can see that
seaweed (at least, I ASSUME it's meant to be seaweed O_o), and leap over the
crab that's set up home on top of the sunken ship, then keep going right to
access another subterranean game screen.

Item Usage
===========

AN EMPTY CHEST - Drop it on the rocky surface of the game's second screen and
                 Dizzy will stand on top of it, allowing him to reach a higher
                 platform.

A MAGIC STONE - Use in front of the totem pole to get to the top.

A HEAVY WEIGHT - Place it on the hook in the "treehouse complex" to lower a
                 platform.

A RUBBER SNORKEL - Allows Dizzy to enter the water without fear of insta-kill.

                         typing it up will take time!!

===============
Coin Locations
===============

NB: At the moment, I'm still trying to find the locations of 2 hidden coins, so
    even in the next update this may not be a complete list. Please bear with
    me. The next update of this FAQ will feature at least 28 of the 30 coins.

(No mark = visible on the screen, relatively easy to get)
(* = not naturally visible)
(** = invisible, plus very hard to find)

1) On the screen you see after using the "An empty chest" item, jump on top of
   the rocks from just to the right of the flower (any later than that and
   you'll find that Dizzy just rolls right off of the rock formation).

*2) The same screen as coin 1 - touch the purple hornet to reveal it, then go
    and collect it from the next screen.

**3) Tap the 'Fire' button in front of the bush next to the tree on the screen
    with Hookjaw's grave and this coin will be revealed.

*4) The Snoggles' easternmost hut (the screen with both an orange and purple
    hornet). Knock on the door by pressing 'Fire' in front of it and the coin
    will be unveiled.

5) Go underneath the ledge on the screen with coin 2 to find this one.

6) Two screens after the first "falling cage" trap, this coin is placed behind
   the second trap, and if you're going to collect it then you'll have to first
   get onto the eastern side of the ledge it's on, then jump from that position
   to where the coin is. If you try to just walk over to it, you'll get caught
   in the trap and be forced to restart the game!

**7) Examine the red flowers at the bottom of the screen that's one to the left
     of the first cage-based trap that you encounter.

*8) Press 'Fire' in front of the door of the hut that's on the screen above
    where coin 6 is located.

9) On the screen directly above the first cage trap.

10) One screen to the right of the eighth coin, along with an advert for one
   of CodeMasters' other games (Yeah, THAT's what the scroll says). ;P

*11) From the edge of the platform that hosts coin number 10, make a huge leap
              of faith to the right and Dizzy will hit the purple hornet that
would
     otherwise be out of reach, which will shoot out the eleventh coin in a
     similar fashion to the game's other purple hornet.

12) One screen to the left of the hook that you place a certain item on to
    lower a ledge in the treehouse compex. This coin may be hard to see because
    Dizzy is right in front of it when he enters the screen.

13) This is the coin that you see right at the start of the game; it cannot be
    accessed until you come back here with "A RUBBER SNORKEL" in your
    inventory.

======================
i)   Loading Problems
======================

Q. When I try to load the game from a machine boot-up, I get the message "Disk
   Read/Write Error!" and am given the options "Retry" or "Cancel", but if I
   hit 'Retry' then the message comes up again! I can't load the game from a
   Workbench screen, so does this mean that my game disk is useless?

A. Not necessarily. I had this problem with my disk when I started writing this
   FAQ. What I had to do was switch the little black peg on the disk over to
   the "Write enable" (ie, the hole is covered up) position, then the game
   loaded up first time, and has given me little trouble since. If you still
   encounter problems after trying this rather odd method of getting the game
   to start, try turning the Amiga off AT THE MAINS for at least 15 seconds
   (as suggested in the system's manual), then switching it back on again.
 If your game continues to be temperamental, making a backup copy of it from
   your Workbench disk may prove to be a good thing to try before the original
   disk stops working altogether.

=======================
ii)   That Funky Music
=======================

Q. Where can I download the music to this game? It's awesome! ^_^

A. The title screen theme is quite easy to get hold of, but the actual in-game
   music of the Amiga version is of better quality than that of the Commodore
   64 version of Treasure Island Dizzy, and the Spectrum version of the game
   has different music altogether!

   What I did manage to find was a .SID (soundtrack rip) of the Commodore 64
   version of the game, at [http://yolkfolk.emugaming.com/media/]. This file
   type doesn't play under Windows Media Player, and will only run in WinAMP
   with a plug-in. I personally just went and found a program specifically made
   for playing SIDs, from [http://home.arcor.de/shartwig/help/spw95.zip].

   If anyone's willing to convert (or compose) the theme that plays during the
   C64 version of the game - track 2 of the SID - into MIDI format, please get
   in touch with me at annoyboy@annoyboy.co.uk! I really want that tune as a
   MIDI, but I'm not a composer, and the only program on the Internet that is
   used to convert SIDs to MIDIs (which will remane nameless as far as this
   FAQ is concerned; try searching Google or e-mail me for details) seems to
   only be able to convert track 1 of the SID, and when it does so, all of the
   instruments used are wrong! Again, if anyone's interested and/or thinks they
   may be able to help me out, PLEASE contact me at annoyboy@annoyboy.co.uk.

iii)   Dizzy Drops Dead!
=========================

Q. WTF? I just suddenly died?! What's that all about?! o_O;;

A. Chances are, you either touched a flame (which is a big no-no in all of the
   Dizzy adventures), which would FRY Dizzy, seeing as he's an egg and all
   (though having said that, the "A FIREPROOF SUIT" item allows you to pass
   through flames unharmed); or your sudden death had something to do with the
   A RUBBER SNORKEL item - namely, it wasn't in your inventory when you were in
           some water, be it through clumsy use of the 'Fire' button underwater
when it
   would result in Dizzy dropping the item, or because of the fact that you
   never had the item in the first place.

   There may be more instances where you might come across what seems like an
   unreasonable intant kill, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
   I may yet add to this answer as the FAQ becomes more complete.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

==========================
iv)   Version Differences
==========================

Q. Go on then, tell me how this version of Treasure Island Dizzy differs
   from the NES one.

A. Well, since you asked me so nicely, I'll tell you. ^_^ In fact, I'll do
   better than that, I'll provide you with a list you can sit and gawp at,
   because I'm such a lovely person and everyfink:

NB: These codes were taken from the coverdisk of an Amiga magazine, however
    since the disk belongs to a friend that I rarely see these days, I can't
    give any more detail than that, such as the name of the magazine or the
    issue that the coverdisk was featured on. -_-;; As long as we're clear
    that I'm not claiming to have found these codes for myself, everything
    should be OK.

==============
Invincibility
==============

Type 'EGGSONLEGS' during play (the screen will flash for confirmation of
correct entry) for what can only be described as invincibility - Dizzy can now
successfully move around underwater without A RUBBER SNORKEL and the flames on
the torches of the bridge next to Hookjaw's grave won't send you back to the
start of the game. However, I believe that the cage traps of the Snoggles'
treehouse complex area will still fall and, while you won't die, the game will
freeze. The only problem with this code is that if that happens, the only way
to return to the title screen is to soft reboot your machine. The game also
freezes if you access Hookjaw's grave from below without having "A BIBLE" in
your inventory.

Type the code again to disable it - provided you haven't crashed the game
first. The screen will flash again if you did it right.

=============
Zero Gravity
=============

As the name I've given this code perhaps suggests, activating it - by typing
'ICANFLY' as the game is being played - will stop Dizzy from falling back to
Earth after a jump if you keep hold of the 'Up' direction on the joystick. This
obviously enables you to reach places ahead of where you should be, and gives
you access to screens that you wouldn't normally be able to access (such as
the screens used to show what the scrolls say).

Retyping the code will turn the effect off.

Similarly, you may *NOT* rewrite or quote from this document. I'm sorry that I
have to place such strict limitations on the distribution of this guide (hey
kids, you can always print it for your own use, and even give the guide to a
friend or two, provided that you don't charge them any money for it! *Grins*)
but it does seem necessary, because I have learned in the past that submitting
a walkthrough that I write to multiple sites generates unbelievable amounts of
SPAM, which I find very unwelcome. And the only way to prevent that would be to
remove my e-mail address from the document, and then it would seem as though it
wasn't my work. Then I'd be REALLY happy.

In short, don't even try to distribute this guide unless you're GameFAQs,
because I will eventually find out and when I do... let's just say that I won't
