Lemmings

Review by Ste C.

"This game truly opened the door to my video game career, and it's still alive!"

A long, long time ago, I was given my first game console, the Amiga (besides the NES), and a disk copy of Lemmings. Back then I never knew or even heard of this 'thing' until I successfully cleared the first few levels. I was hooked...

I still think to myself 'how did a bunch of green and blue men tumbling off high platforms opened my door to videogames?' The thought of it all scared me a little as these guys kill themselves constantly each time they march on. I never had so much fun... in fact, it was funny for some reason. You guide and control these Lemmings to their goal by commanding them to build, dig, climb and even blow them up using their head!! And then it's deja vu for the next hundred levels.

Because of my early age, I couldn't think of anything logical (or even think for myself) on this game. Sure, the levels are unique and challenging and the password option proves useful after taking a break from so many hours. The reason I enjoyed this game so much is that it requires careful thought and skill in order to, say move on from one cave to another just by digging. Logical, see?

I may sound nostalgic but now it's coming back to me - in each level, you must rescue a required number of Lemmings by providing up to ten skills you have. It doesn't take long to finish the first few stages, but more and more of these commands become useful as you move on. You can also speed up or slow down the pace of these guys as they enter the level from a trapdoor above the platforms.

If too many Lemmings die on the stage, you'll have to start over again!

Sure, the graphics are alright and it stands up to the Amiga standards. The choice of gaming difficulties can keep any level of gamer entertained, novice and experts alike. Whether you have a mouse, keyboard or joystick, it's fairly easy to control the cursor; it takes practise to hit the right command and not the self-destruct option!

To put it smoothly, here's what I thought of Lemmings.

Story
-------
2/10
There's not really any thrilling storyline in Lemmings. Just to guide a bunch of blue-sweatered guys to the exit avoiding deadly obstacles.

Graphics
-----------
7/10
The characters appear quite bland but that doesn't stop them from selecting such meaningful commands.

Sound and music
----------------------
8/10
Each stage is fitted in with its own music; just hearing one or two Lemmings cry ''Oh no!'' before uncertain death is comical!

Lastability
--------------
10/10
With hundreds of unique levels to march across, you'll be hooked; unless you're wanting to use the password code that is.

Buy or Rent?
----------------
Well, seeing as this is an Amiga version of the review, you probably have little or no chance on finding this game. However, try buying Lemmings on a completely different format like the Genesis, SNES or PC - you'll find more luck seeing for yourself there. Anyway, this is THE fun game for the most puzzling gamers worldwide!
