I. INTRODUCTION :
Ardok the Barbarian is also known as Asterix and the Magic Cauldron in Europe.
It was renamed for America because Asterix is a French cartoon, and
perhaps no one in America would buy it if it wasn't about barbarians (but I
jest!)
In the game you must find seven pieces of a shield, but footmen from Rome guard
forests and camps called Fishtankum, Conglomeration, and Nonamus, and even
Rome, which you will find the last pieces of the shield in. The game has the
isometric perspective of a third-person graphical adventure. When you fight you
use an arcade set-up, holding down fire and pressing different directions,
which perform various maneuvers.
II. BASICS :
A few things before the detailed stuff--
-- directions aren't two-way; if you go right on a screen and return left on
the next, you will not necessarily be in the same place that you were.
Observing that, this guide opts for a transitional, rather than graphical,
diagram.
-- If you follow the walkthrough you do not need to grab meat; you will
finish the game before a lack of it is problematic.
-- Solving the game, at least once the mapping is done, is as simple as
avoiding and efficiently killing enemies. But you should mostly avoid enemies,
because you only have five lives.
iia. Enemies :
(Gladiator) - The toughest enemy; his net paralyzes you temporarily if
it connects.
(Soldier) - Weaker than a Warrior.
(Warrior) - Stronger than a Soldier.
(Wild Pig) - The weakest enemy, and doesn't use tactics. But you get meat from
killing one.
iib. Items :
[Potion] - You start with one; on top of the screen it is the pouch that you
see. You become invincible and deal extra damage for a short time when you use
it, which requires pressing fire when you are outside of combat. It takes a bit
to activate, however, and you only have one--I suggest that you conserve it for
the gladiator fight in Rome.
[Golden Coppers] - These give you points but nothing else.
[Apple] - Restores health.
[Dungeon Key] - Opens all of the cells in the Dingy Dungeon.
[Piece of Shield] - You win the game when you collect seven.
[Dead Pig] - You eventually die if you don't have food (which, by the meat
icon, is indicated in the upper-lefthand corner of the screen). Kill wild pigs
to get more meat, or otherwise get the dead pig from Dungeon Cell 10. But in a
quick, optimal game, you won't need extra meat.
iic. Fighting :
Ardok enters fight mode when he touches enemies. To attack, hold the fire
button and press up, down, or forward. I will list the moves that you can
perform in combat:
(Hold Fire Button) + Up performs an uppercut. This is the best manuever but a
bit slow.
(Hold Fire Button) + Forward performs a kick. This is quicker but weaker than
the uppercut.
(Hold Fire Button) + Down performs a slide. This is not very useful.
The best move in fights is the uppercut. I tend to use this against everything,
but doing so effectively requires practice. In all fights besides those against
wild pigs, which are easy in any case, wait for two or three attacks from the
enemy, perhaps take the third hit and uppercut before he can get away. But
realize the existence of the silly law that you can't hit an enemy while they
are attacking. In a fight if you are close to the enemy's side, back away when
you hit with an uppercut. Wait till the enemy's last attack, which is usually
the third, and hit him as he turns. But do not let an enemy corner you--a good
rule is to play offensively if a fight starts and an enemy is very close to
cornering you.
Fighting is very difficult in the game, but as you find with practice it is not
unfair.
III. WALKTHROUGH :
Pagan Village
=============
Go up and then go down. Take the PIECE OF SHIELD and go up.
Forest Grove
============
Go down quickly, avoiding the enemies.
Camp Fishtankum
===============
To avoid combat go right, but above the fence, not below it, entering CF2. Move
down and right immediately to avoid a warrior from the left in CF2. Take the
PIECE OF SHIELD in CF2. Now return to CF1 to the left, going in a straight line
(under the tent that the warrior that you avoided perhaps got stuck on), which
should bypass combats. Go up and leave the screen whence you entered Camp
Fishtankum. You must fight a soldier on the way, but you should avoid fighting
two, or worse, a warrior.
Forest Grove
============
Go up quickly to avoid the combats (FG1 -> FG3). Take the golden coppers and
apple. Go left.
Rome
====
Go up. On the next screen (R1) notice and take the third PIECE OF SHIELD. Go
right quickly. Go right again.
Forest Grove
============
Take the golden coppers and apple again. Go down (FG3 -> FG2) and then go right
(FG2 -> F3).
Forest
======
Go up.
Forest Grove
============
Take the fourth PIECE OF SHIELD. Go down (FG5 -> FG2) and then go up (FG2 ->
FG1). Quickly go up again (FG1 -> FG3), taking the golden coppers and apple for
the third time, and finally going right and then left quickly.
Not So Open Forest
==================
Go down.
Open Forest
===========
Go right. Go down.
Camp Conglomeration
===================
Go up immediately. On the next screen (CC2), take the DUNGEON KEY. Now wait for
a guard to attack you, and do not move at all in the fight. The soldier will
capture you.
Dingy Dungeon
=============
Take the dead pig, and quickly open the door with your key. Leave and walk
right in the hallway. You will probably fight with a guard, and on the next
screen another may attack you. Enter the cell door with the Roman numerals III
on it for your fifth PIECE OF SHIELD. Leave the cell and move immediately so
that you avoid a guard. Go off-screen to the right. Go right again to find
yourself in another hallway; this one is outside of your original cell, which
you should reenter. This time do not leave your cell, but wait till the door is
opened by itself. Then leave to enter the arena.
Arena
=====
Use your potion here (press fire outside of combat) and afterwards fight and
kill the gladiator quickly. Take the sixth PIECE OF SHIELD, going up quickly
out of the arena.
Rome
====
Fight your way down and go off-screen to the bottom, which takes you to R5.
Grab the seventh PIECE OF SHIELD.
"By Odin you have done it!" (Odin is a god I believe in Norse mythology--
although if Ardok is Norse he is a ways from home in Rome. Not sure a Camp
Fishtankum fits into the historical record at any rate.)
