Operation Wolf
Review by jimfish
"Without this, you wouldn't have your Halo."
Operation Wolf originally started life upon the Arcade machines across America; munching away at countless teens' pocket money from that era. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to pick up the conversion for the C64 and I can see why they kept playing.
OP is one great First Person Shooter. It's not just drones of soldiers who stand in your plain sight...Oh no, these enemies will run all over the battlefield, roll out the way of your gunfire, letting you waste away your precious ammo. The AI's not great but it's a game from the early 80's, so what do you expect? The developer's throw more into the mix by adding all sorts of enemies...Armoured tanks...helicopters...even boats! And just to keep the trigger-happy gamers out there on their toes, they'll be plenty of innocents and hostages out there on the battlefields, so be warned!
Controls are simple, with both a Mouse and Joystick option. Playing with the Joystick makes you feel like your one giant, soldier slaughtering helicopter pilot (Or was that just me?) but the mouse does provide a much more precise aim. Left click shoots, right click throws a grenade.
It's addicting but can be seriously frustrating due to it's extreme difficulty. You'll need to quickly blast all the enemies off the screen, but it sure is good practise for other sharp-shooting games. Sometimes the enemies can overwhelm you but if you keep a clear head you can make it out of fights fine.
A total of six different levels and combine it with the tense fire fights, you'll be playing this for some hours. I'm not sure if you can play this game with a C64 Lightgun since it doesn't say on the box, but if it is possible, I'm sure you will get a lot more enjoyment out of it.
FINAL VERDICT:
A great game for one great console. If you really want this, I'm sure you can find this game pretty much anywhere, and chances are it'll be in a bundle pack of vintage games on eBay, so if you have a Commodore, pick this game up.
