Please read this note first before you
go to the main document. However, some
of the updates in this note might
contain materials which some will
consider them as 'mini spoilers'.
The main document itself has been
designed not to contain any spoilers
(I don't know if there is, sorry).
Thank you for your concern.
_____________________________________
It has been a while since the last update and since the U.S. version will
soon be released (but somehow the pirated copy has already hit the market -
from a trustworthy sources)it is logical enough to do an update now. However,
I choose to do the opposite: there won't be any updates.
Why, you ask. Mainly because I'm out of time right now. College stuffs, my
job, got a girl to chase (ha ha) and everything. Sorry.
Then why I posted this 'update'? Simple: to set things right. You know,
recently I received a mail, the write sue me because I was saying that
Selphie's special arts are useless. He told me that there is a special spell
for Selphie that will kill all the enemies instanly. But here's the
interesting point of the case: I already knew it. And I found it useless, no
fun, and that is my opinion. So don't say that I threw an opinion without
any required knowledge about it.
Furthermore, I have a copy of FF VIII Ultimania, the official guidebook from
Squaresoft. The book apparently covers ALL you need to know for PLAYING
FF VIII. Except for Rinoa's bloodtype (no kidding).
And yes, I can read Japanese.
Unless there is a significant change in the U.S. version, you can actually
use the Japanese guidebook in the U.S. version. Happy reading.
E-mails are still welcome. Send them to these addresses:
Netaddress account : kanketsu@usa.net
Telebot account (prior) : wing@telebot.net
Private account : hi-mi-tsu
Before you write, please keep in mind about these things:
- I didn't mean to be arrogant, but the book has tons of info. So
if you're trying to inform me about something related to gameplay,
there is a great possibility that I've already know it. Again, I
didn't have any intentions to be arrogant but if I sound like one,
let me apologize in advance. Sorry.
- All of the errors (both grammatical and technical)are still there;
I didn't edit them. No time, sorry.
- There are lots of FAQs beside mine, so you better check them. Afterall,
the advantage of this document is nothing but easier to read.
For more details, go check Scott Ong's FAQ(s) or Yu Shen Fu's. They are
great.
- I appreciate others' opinions. Everything I said in this document is
pure my personal opinion. If you are against it, fine. That's yours.
- Here now, gone tomorrow. A reply is not likely. Sorry.
- Seiken Densetsu IV FAQ? Maybe. Maybe not.
Another way to contact me:
Leave a message at RPGFan's MB (www.rpgfan.com). I usually go there.
Besides, others will help you if I'm not around.
Terms of use:
- You don't have any obligations to inform me if you use this document
just for personal use.
- If you want to put this on a website (unaltered), name the place so I
can pay a visit there. By telling me where your site is, you are
already given the permission.
- 'Can I edit your walkthrough for better appearance? HTML?' This case
is the same as above. Just NOTIFY me, and go ahead.
Oh, yeah, don't forget to put my name somewhere on it. ^^
That's for now.

About Updates:
Please notice the date when the info was written. Some might lose their
relevance now (for me being lazy).

(not much, though)
1. IMO, the biggest trouble in FF VIII is to find certain items (either
for tuning your weapons up or acquire Quistis' Blue Magic). Few can be
brought from stores, the others can be gained by changing cards, but
changing the cards will 'destroy' the cards. Although there is actually
a way to gain them back, wouldn't it be wiser to gain items by another
way?
Apparently, stealing items from enemies is crucial in FF VIII because
it can gives you tons of items. Therefore many of you will make one
party member to do the thievery all the time. Steal everything until the
text 'XXXXX doesn't have anything' pop up on the screen.
I'm telling you, this is actually a mistake. Some of the monsters DROP
better items and these items are sometimes (most of the times) different
than the ones you steal from the same enemy.
For a better explanation, let's take a look at a SUMMARY from Ultimania,
6th chapter, Monster Data:
(I use abbreviations due to the lack of space here)
__________________________________________________________________________
| |
| Alcheo Dinos |
| =========================================================================|
| Dropped items (total success rate = 255/256) |
| ------------------------------------------- |
| 178/256 51/256 15/256 12/256 |
| LVL 1-19 E.D. Bone x 1 S.M. Stone x 8 M.stone x 4 E.D. Bone x 2 |
| LVL 20-29 E.D. Bone x 3 DRAGON FANG x 6 E.D.bone x2 E.D. Bone x 6 |
| LVL 30-100 E.D. Bone x 6 S. Fragment x 8 E.D.bone x8 S. Fragmentx6 |
|==========================================================================|
| Stolen items (total success rate = 64/256) |
| ------------------------------------------- |
| 178/256 51/256 15/256 12/256 |
| LVL 1-19 E.D. Bone x 1 E.D. Bone x 1 E.D. Bonex1 E.D. Bone x 2 |
| LVL 20-29 E.D. Bone x 3 E.D. Bone x 3 E.D.bone x4 E.D. Bone x 4 |
| LVL 30-100 E.D. Bone x 8 E.D. Bone x 8 E.D.bone x10 S. Fragmentx10|
|__________________________________________________________________________|
*) Calculation Example:
The chance for getting Dragon fang x 6 = 51/256 x 255/256
and from the table above you can see that the Alcheo Dinos HAS TO BE at
LVL 20~29. Also, DON'T STEAL, you'll get the items shown in the
'Stolen Items' table then.
I hope that info will help you. Not much. (I don't do a translation, it
is way too consuming my time) although I must admit that providing a
complete list above will help lots of gamers. Excuse me for being selfish.
Other note on items is you can gain lots of rare items by playing the
Pocket Station minigame, 'Odekake Chocobo RPG'.
2. About the change items ability: certain items require a G.F. to be at
specific level. For example, Grasharaborus has to be at level 100
before he can change 100 Cursed Claw to 1 Dark Matter.
3. Square has put lots of mini events in the game. These will not give you
any significant advantages (but there is some for certain cases like
Zell's 'Love Love Event')but it is cool to watch them all. Just spare
some times trying to find these out ^^.
4. The score of Eyes on Me: Whenever sang my song.
5. Please remember that the FAQ was based on the Japanese version so
expect lots of errors in the translations since my Japanese is not
perfect. There are several types of errors:
- Katakana: There are lots of ways to translate kana. Ifrit and
Efreet actually has the same kana. I choose the cooler, my version.
- Kanji : Grammatical or maybe I was just too lazy to check it
again with dictionary.
- Others : Human errors (^_^;)
*************** Q U I C K U P D A T E ****************
3/ 23/ 1999
- Crytal Power told me that the first lyrics of 'Eyes on Me' should be
'I never sang my songs' and the third line should be 'I never said my
words'. Yes, it makes sense. I will confirm it as soon as possible but
meanwhile, I believe he's right.
- Seifer does have R1 trigger. I have received tons of mails saying this.
- About the specials FAQ: The name is TOKUSHU WAZA not Tokushugi or Tokugi.
Actually, I realized this when I play the remake version of FF VI, open the
menu and find 'tokushu' inside.
Besides, Rei Urabe had confirmed this too. Another credit for her.
- Things I don't know:
- Kame no Koura. Still wondering where they are.
- Not good in Card battle. Guess I have to play othello again, huh?
- What you should do at the room under the wooden bridge in Altimicia's
Castle (the one that looks like a basement. You can drain the water but
nothing happens??).
- No, I don't have a Pokesute right now.
- Things I already know (just to avoid some unnecessary mails) :
- The ingredients for your best weapons and where to find them.
- The requirements for acquiring all the G.F.s and that includes how
to beat the not-so-that-hard Ultima Weapon
- How to locate and beat Omega Weapon. Just don't ask me now.
- A database concerning G.F.s, Items, magic, Draw points, etc. But please
take a note: EVERYONE CAN DO IT if you know the language; just READ
THE TUTORIAL. End of discussion.
- Some cheap battle methods. Here's one of them:
Make your status attack junctioned with Sleep X 100, another character
with Stop X 100, and the third character Death X 100. Trust me, it works
60% of the time and can save your time a lot.
- The ultimate battle method:
Requirements: Squall's End of Heart learned (optional)
Quistis' Mighty Guard learned
At least 1 Aura spell
3 Eiyuu no Kusuri (Hero's Medicine)
Steps:
1. Cast Aura on Quistis.
2. Use her Mighty Guard. It casts Regen, Protesu, Shell, and Levitate
(and also Aura, but sometimes it doesn't work. Don't know why) at
once.
3. Use Hero's Medicine on three characters.
4. Voila! You'll have an invinsible party. Just attack the opponent
with your specials.
The downside:
If the Aura effects fade out too soon.
- Anything that has been covered by me, Yu Shenfu, Steven Bruck and Scott
Ong. You can find the info in each's FAQ.

|____________________________________________________________________________|
| | |
| | Hajimemashite. Welcome to the unofficial walkthrough |
| | of Final Fantasy VIII, written by me. I'm doing this |
| | because I want to challenge myself in writing skills. |
| | However, English is not my mother language; the fact |
| | leads to grammatical errors scattered among your way. |
| | --------------------- |
| INTRODUCTION | A more friendly format had been chosen to avoid these |
| ------------ | errors but some will remain, waiting someone to tell |
| | me where they are. |
| | --------------------- |
| | I'm not as good as Kao Megura, but I'll put my best in |
| | this walkthrough. If you have any questions, comments, |
| | or even critics, just send them to kanketsu@usa.net. |
| | Participants are welcome. See you there! |
|___________________|________________________________________________________|
| | |
| | This is not your typical FAQ. As a matter of fact, the |
| | format was based on common Japanese Guidebooks (like |
| HOW TO NAVIGATE | V-Jump FF VII guide, or Final Fantasy Complete Works |
| --------------- | by Digicube. Both can be found on your local Japanese |
| | bookstores) and maybe unfamiliar to you. |
| | ---------------------- |
| | Guess what, it is simpler than you think. Basicly, the |
| | COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH is seperated into several "FAQ"s |
| | (I don't like the term anyway, but I believe it will |
| | represent my point). Some are independent, but all of |
| | them refer to this WALKTHROUGH. |
| | ---------------------- |
| | Keep this in mind: You can get optimum advantage by |
| | using the parts simultaneously, but this depends on |
| | your reading intention. If you want simple hints and |
| Want some | want to find all the secrets for yourself, then this |
| details ? | walkthrough will perfectly suit you. On the other |
| | hand, FAQs on particular subjects (like item chart or |
| | special arts) might come in handy for the beginners, |
| | who don't have pride as much as old-school gamers (No |
| | offense!). |
| | ---------------------- |
| | The walkthrough itself is divided into two parts: |
| | - left side that contains the necessary steps, |
| | CHRONOLOGICAL order to avoid spoilers. |
| Left and Right | - right side that contains some game commments, but |
| | not details. |
| | Some notations are included in the right side, giving |
| | you directions to the related topics. |
| | ---------------------- |
| The (!) mark | An exclamation mark (!) means you are in a new scene. |
| | *)valids only in disc #3. |
| | ---------------------- |
| | I hope this note will help you. Feedbacks welcome. |

| CURRENT PROJECT | The format is somehow similar to an HTML page.... |
| --------------- | don't you think so? |
| | ---------------------- |
| | Well, I don't have a personal website and if I did, |
| HTML? | I don't have time to maintain it. Wonder if someone |
| | read this and have interest to convert it to HTML |
| | walkthrough..... |
| | And I believe it would be easier to read! |
| | ---------------------- |
| Unanswered | Thank you for sending me questions but recently I |
| E-mails... | don't have the time to answer all of them. |
| | ......sorry. |
| | ---------------------- |
| Sneaking | If you like to use some parts of this walkthrough |
| Guests... | (and the related topics) please tell me first. I |
| | realized that the info is not completely mine but |
| | at least I've done efforts in asking permissions |
| | to the rightful ones (and it wasn't too easy... |
| | trust me). Besides, does it harm you for sending |
| | an E-mail to notify me? Thank you. |
| | ----------------------- |
| Future Plans | - Full Japanese Fonts (need a run test, again). |
| | - Corrections on some parts of the flowchart. |

| | Or you might want to check Scott Ong's FAQ. He has |
| | some basics, too. |
| | ------------------------------- |
| JUNCTION | Junction is the main system in FF VIII. The term is |
| -------- | unfimiliar to English speakers, I know. Junction is |
| | actually the same as the old one: "Equip", differs |
| | only in the object. |
| | There are no equipping in FF VIII (even for weapons) |
| | since they have been replaced with "Junction". It |
| | allows you to "equip" magics to all of your parameters |
| | and increasing them. In certain cases, junction gives |
| | you some effects like status ailments immunity or |
| | else.... |
| | BTW, you need a GF before you do junction. |
| | -------------------------------- |
| DRAW | All magics are obtained by drawing from enemies or |
| ---- | draw points. You need to equip a GF with command |
| | ability "Draw" before drawing magics. |
| | *) Magics can also be obtained from items. More on |
| | this later. |

| | | Personality : |
| | | Squall's advisor. Apparently, she is the |
| | | "onee-sama" (older women^^) in the game |
| | | although her age is the same as Squall's. As |
| | | a Garden teacher, Quistis is infamous among |
| | | her students...there is a "fan club" for her. |
| | | However, this affects her reputation and the |
| | | ethic commitee doesn't like a well (???) |

| | | Anyway, Quistis is a good teacher but seems |

| | | network and that means you can see the "chat" |
| | | (no, you can't submit anything but it's still |
| | | fun to "see" the student's conversation. |
| | | Later in the game, the network contains some |
| | | side story plot...sort of. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Leave the network. | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| | | |
| ! Equip your G.F. | ___________________Main System no.1: Junction |
| | | |
| | | Now you'll have to learn about junction. |
| | | Basicly junction is the same as "equip" but |
| | | it can customize everything about your |
| | | characters. |
| | | |
| | | First, equip Squall a G.F. Now you can equip |
| | | some magics to your parameters. Which ones |
| | | you can equip to depends on the G.F.s ability.|
| | | For example: If Shiva has "strength junction" |
| | | and Squall is currently equipped with her, |
| | | then Squall will be able to junction some |
| | | magics into his attack power, making his |
| | | physical attack stronger. |
| | | |
| Optimize your settings. | After you equipped a G.F., you have an option |
| | | to optimize your settings. |
| | | Attack Magic Defense |
| | | Since you don't have any magics right now, |
| | | we'll skip the magic junction. |
| | | |
| Set up your battle menu. | Now about command abilities. These are the |
| | | ones you use in battles. At this point, you |
| | | only have Magic, Draw, and Item. Set them up |
| | | in your battle window. |
| | | |
| Party and menu ability. | Notice the lower box on the left? It's for |
| | | character or party abilities; you get two |
| | | vacant slots for equipping a G.F. (no, it's |
| | | not cumulative. Equipping ten G.F.s still |
| | | gives you two slots). Later in the game, |
| | | There are G.F.s which have ability that give |
| | | you three slots, and eventually four. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Go 1 screen to the right. | |
| | | |
| Talk to Quistis. | About the SeeD exam's requirements. Squall |
| | | has to accomplished a small task in Fire |
| | | Cave. |
| | | |
| Leave the class room. | |
| | | |
| ! Bump into a girl at the | |
| corridor. | |
| > Are you okay? | |
| > ..... | |
| | | |
| | | |
| Go 1 screen to the right. | |
| | | |
| ! Talk to the man on the | |

| He gives you 7 cards. | _______________________Mini Game: Card Battle |
| | | |
| | | First cards you get. They aren't fancy enough |
| | | but it's better than nothing. |
| | | How we play it? |
| | | |
| | | As we already knew, there are many NPCs in |
| | | an RPG. Many give you informations, but most |
| | | of them do "nothing"... |
| | | |
| | | Square gives an important role to these |
| | | NPCs. If you talk to them by using the |
| | | [square] button, they will reply you with |
| | | a card battle. |
| | | |
| | | Aside from its role as a mini game, does card |
| | | battle give you something good? On in other |
| | | words: Is it worth enough to play? |
| | | The answer is YES. YOU HAVE TO PLAY IT. |
| | | |
| | | Quetzalcoatl ability "Card change" allows |
| | | you to change a card into items. Rare cards |
| | | yield rare items. Rare items are needed to |
| | | create best magics, best weapons, etc. |
| | | See my point. |
| | | |
| | | How to Play Card Battle |
| | | ---------------------- |
| | | |
| | | The game is like a cross between a usual card |
| | | game (forgot its name) and othello. |
