______________________________________________
Zone Raiders is a cyberpunk action shooter game released in 1995 by Virgin
Interactive. A cyberpunk game is a game largely based on science fiction
that revolves around technology and destroying big business and evil
controlling governments. If you have ever played Quarantine, these two games
are very similar... Quarantine is much better however. In Zone Raiders, you
begin as an new member of the gang called The Raiders. The Raiders wreak
havoc in the local city often stealing computer chips or parts for machines.
You will be the rover driver wreaking havoc in the city. Rover Driver?
You ask? You drive various interesting hover cars referred to as rovers,
each with their own set of weaknesses and strengths. Not only do you get to
drive them, but also you get to fire an assortment of weapons from them.

One of the struggles in this game is to learn how to pilot your hover
vehicles. They do not react or drive like normal cars and it takes a
little time to get use to them. There are no engines. There are
forward and backward thrusters. Mysteriously there is also a brake.
I am not sure how a brake would work in such a hovercraft vehicle.
In Star Wars Episode I, during the pod racing sequences, to brake or
slow down, the pods would create air resistance with metal flaps that
fold out. The more the metal flaps are out, the more resistance, and
therefore the less speed. However when you apply the brake in Zone
Raiders, no metal flaps or any such mechanization is noticed... Anyway,
once you have a firm grounding on piloting the vehicle, then you have
to become coordinated enough to fire the weapons at the same time. If
anything this game will improve the coordination between your hands
and your eyes. Remember to use strafing as much as possible because
most enemy projectiles move slow enough that you can just dodge them!

(IV)===> WEAPONS/ITEMS <===(IV)
______________________________________________
You will find a few items in Zone Raiders that refill your shields,
repair your hull, upgrade your weapons, and even one that boosts
your speed. I list them here.
===========
+ WEAPONS +
===========
1) Lasers
Description: You automatically get these at the beginning of
every level. Although most weapons carry onto the next level
if you finish them, you lose them if you die. However you NEVER lose
the lasers. They fire yellow pulse lasers that are the weakest shots,
but are not necessarily the worst weapon because they fire so fast.
In the Prison Mission, one of the cells has a red laser upgrade. The
upgrade has the lasers fire at the same rate, but now two per shot
instead of one per shot, making lasers the best weapon in the game.
2) Machine Gun
Description: This is one the best weapons in the game. You fire
bullets very fast that you cannot see, you only see the dirt that
kicks up on your targets. And apparently there is dust and dirt
on absolutely anything and everything in the game because anything
that is hit by the machine gun kicks up dirt. The machine gun is
very good at destroying turrets.
3) Plasma Cannon
Description: The Plasma Cannon is a decent weapon with nice damage
and firing rate. Use it over the lasers, but not the machine gun.
4) Projectiles
Description: You get the projectiles in later missions of Zone
Raiders. They fire rock type looking bullets that explode when
they hit their target. Use these over the rockets.
5) Grenade Launcher
Description: The grenade launcher fires cluster grenades that
break off into 4 smaller grenades once the first large one hits the
target. Good for destroying large amounts of enemy rovers. Do not
use often because the explosions can hurt you. Do not use against
turrets.
6) Rockets
Description: This is the most powerful, but also one of the worst
weapons in the game. It's damage is the highest rating, but it
fires very slowly. Use against large enemies only.
=========
+ ITEMS +
=========
1) Hull Repair
Description: These red rectangular boxes completely refill the red
box meter on the bottom of the screen. The red box meter represents
the status of your hover vehicles hold. It is your last defense
before you catch fire and burn and die.
2) Shield Repair
Description: You can have your shield recharged by 25% by collecting
these yellow square boxes.
3) Full Shield Repair
Description: These red square boxes completely recharge your shields.
4) Jet Pack
Description: The jet pack looks like two gray cylinders standing
upright. You get a considerable, but very short boost of speed that
is useful for clearing jumps and escaping enemy rovers.

(V)===> ENEMIES <===(V)
______________________________________________
In Zone Raiders, your enemies are graphically very poor and stale.
Every enemy you see will look like the previous enemy, just with
different colors perhaps, or maybe a slightly different shape.
However it seems that somehow there are several enemies, and I will
list them in order of points earned by killing them here. How many
points you get per enemy depends on what weapon you use to kill
them. All points here are listed with laser kills, so that it is
all uniformed data.
---TURRETS---
The Machine Gun seems to kill turrets the fastest out of all the
weapons. Turrets locate where you are and fire at your exact spot.
Luckily no enemy weapons in the game are heat seeking type so you
can simply use either STRAFE LEFT or STRAFE RIGHT to easily dodge
the incoming projectile. All turrets are stationary, but some can
spin 360' degrees to face and target you.
Roadside Red Turrets - 12 points
The small roadside turrets fire nothing at all, but are simply a
source of points. They appear ontop of the solid walls on many
tracks.
Medium Red Turrets - 17 points
These spinning turrets fire red lasers.
Large Red Turrets - 22 points
These spinning turrets fire red lasers, often found in groups of
three.
Giant Red Turrets - 52 points
These large turrets fire rockets! These deadly turrets spell
certain death if you do not act very careful around them. Often
found in groups of two.
---ROVERS---
Most of the poorly drawn enemy rovers look similar to each
other... and incidentally many share the same point values.
White Rovers - 52 points
These are the first enemy rovers that you will encounter.
ARMAMENT: Lasers
Blue Roof Rovers - 52 points
ARMAMENT: Lasers
Red Spoiler Rover - 52 points
Overall this rover is blue, but it has a snazzy red spoiler too.
ARMAMENT: Lasers
Ocean Buoy Rover - 62 points
ARMAMENT: Rockets
Blue Rattail Rover - 82 points
ARMAMENT: Projectiles
Green Rovers - 82 points
ARMAMENT: Plasma Cannon/Rockets
Bull Rover - 102 points
Looks like this rover has bull horns protecting the cockpit
ARMAMENT: Plasma Cannon/Rockets/Projectiles
Blue/Red Rover - 102 points
ARMAMENT: Rockets
Police Blue Rovers - 127 points
If they spot you, their red bar on top will flash.
ARMAMENT: Plasma Cannon
Erlenmeyer Rover - 127 points
This Rover looks like an Erlenmeyer flask on its side.
ARMAMENT: Rockets

(VI)===> MISSIONS <===(VI)
______________________________________________
Instead of intricate and beautiful city streets and
bustling highways that the game is suppose to take place in,
you are stuck in terrible polygonal looping tracks that use
pale annoying colors. A "police station" looks just like
the city "museum". Graphics in this game are far from even
acceptable, and the missions can be better clarified as
digital find and seek. However I have the mission briefing
and ending for you and the TIME is how long it took me to
beat these annoying levels. Also the items you need to find
are also listed. Using the radar (VLocator) in your car, you
should have no problem finding these items and it would be a
waste of time for me to show you. In some missions there is a
timer in the bottom of the screen. If the timer runs to zero,
then a UFO saucer type enemy flies out of the sky and shoots
red heat seeking rockets and plasma cannon shots at you.
I can not figure out how to beat the Lost City level. I have
driven around the entire level about 6 times and I can not find
what to do next. I have found the Gamma and Alpha Phase keys, I
just cannot find the Beta Phase Key.
Please email me at tbuckwalter@hotmail.com if you figure out
where the Beta Phase Key is! Thanks.
