A. What is this game?
=========================

Kings Quest I VGA is a remake of the original game "King's Quest" released in
1986 by Sierra Entertainment. This resurrection, brought out in 2001, is not
done by Sierra, however. It has been made by a group of fans and a program
called AGD, which they used to make the game. They call themselves "Tierra",
giving a tribute to the developers of the original series. The game is
absolutely free and can be downloaded from Tierra's site (just Google to get
there). A complete walkthrough is also located there, in case you want more
detailed information on the little secrets and things in the game. With that
being said...

=============================================
B. How is it different from the original?
=============================================

The original King's Quest used an extremely limited color scheme, of course, so
the first thing that comes to mind when playing this remake are the graphics.
The sprites of the characters are still pixely as compared to the backgrounds
(pre-rendered), but are much more detailed than the original game. Some puzzles
and item descriptions have also been changed up, and the story has been heavily
expanded on. Otherwise, the game is very much like the original, and people who
have played the original should have no trouble with this one.

=========================
C. Control Runthrough
=========================

When you move the cursor to the top of the screen, a toolbar will come down
which allows you to change what you are having the character (Sir Graham) do.
Clicking on a cursor will change the cursor, and the function of clicking on
items with it.

The cursor that looks like Graham is what you use to walk.
The cursor of an eye allows you to closer inspect items you click on.
The cursor of a hand allows you to pick up and interact with items.
The cursor of a speech bubble allows you to talk with things you click.

Now, about the inventory menus.

The item box (it will either show an item you have, or will be blank at the
start of the game) shows what item you are about to use. To use the item,
select the item in that box and click on something to use it on. You know you
have an item in the box when your cursor looks like the item you wish to use.

The inventory box (that looks like a satchel) shows what items you have with
you. To put an item in the item box, select it and click "OK". You can also
pick up and inspect items through this box.

The box with a tab on it allows you to change different aspects about the game
(ex. sound/music volume) as well as save and load games.

The box with the question mark repeats everything above concerning controls.
Congratulations on wasting a minute or two of your life.

D. Walkthrough
==================

The story thus far:

You are Sir Graham, the greatest and finest knight in the land of Daventry. As
of late, the land has fallen into a state of disaster. Citizens go hungry,
crops die left and right, and the kingdom is in a state of financial disaster.
Any time now, the kingdom could be taken by another country. Daventry needs
help, FAST, and that's why the old king, Edward the Benevolent, has summoned
you to his chambers. Apparently this all happened because three powerful
artifacts were stolen from the kingdom many years ago. They are: a Magic
Mirror, which foretells the future, a Magic Shield that protects its bearer
from all mortal harm, and a Magic Chest that is forever filled with gold. The
king is old, and fears he will not live long enough to see Daventry restored to
its former glory. He has chosen you, Sir Graham, to find these treasures and
save Daventry. If you can, you will take the place of Edward as King of
Daventry when he passes. You agree, and so you head off in search of the three
treasures. You head off on a King's Quest.

Throughout the game, you'll be accumulating points for what you do. These don't
affect the game outright, but it's a common goal to try and get all 158
possible. This walkthrough will show you how to beat the game AND get all 158
points.

Be careful. At random moments in certain areas, a creature or person may attack
you. Refer to section E to deal with these people.

The only set order to get the treasures in is that you need to get the Shield
LAST. You can get the Mirror or Chest at any time, but I'm placing the Mirror
first because it is the easiest way to get acquainted with the game, and is
also the easiest treasure to get.

Also, many treasures in the game have nothing to do with winning (the golden
egg, the golden walnut, etc.), but I've put them in the walkthrough because A.
They're on the way to where you are going, and B. because you get points for
doing them, and this walkthrough is all about getting all 158 points.

====================
a. The Magic Mirror
====================

All right Graham. You've jogged outside the castle, and it's time to go
treasure hunting! But where to start? I always hated this part of the game,
where you wander around madly. But that's why I'm here. Start out by going left
out of the castle area and to the next screen. You're now in a clearing with a
rock in the middle. Perhaps your childhood interests could be of use here! Turn
over the rock, but stand behind it (farther back on the screen) before you do
it, or you will be crushed by the rock. A small hole remains where the rock
was. Reach inside there and you'll get a handy dagger!

Now, go one screen left and you'll come to a lake. Pick up some pebbles from
there and head one screen right, then one screen up. You are now at a large,
curvy tree. Use the hand cursor to climb the tree. Now that you are up in the
tree, slowly edge your way to the nest and grab the golden egg. Then walk off
the tree. Don't worry about falling, you won't die.

Already we've got some treasure and are well on our way to getting that Mirror!
From the curvy tree area, head one screen right. You should come to a carrot
patch. Grab a carrot from the patch (DON'T EAT IT!) and then head one screen
up. You MIGHT see a little elf wandering around in the clearing by the lake. If
not, walk to another screen and keep walking on and off until he appears. When
he does, talk to him and he'll give you a cool magic ring. The elf will then
disappear. Now go one screen up. You'll find a little bowl sitting in front of
a tree. Pick it up and go to your inventory box (with the satchel). First, LOOK
at the bowl with the eye cursor. Then use the hand cursor on the bowl to
produce a yummy stew. Now, go two screens down and one screen left back to the
curvy egg tree. From here, go two screens to the left. Be careful! One the
first screen, a wolf may attack you. Quickly run away if this happens and then
continue on your journey.

Now you are at an old well. Start by using the dagger on the bucket to get the
bucket. Then use the crank to lower the rope. Climb down the rope and drop into
the water. Now use the hand cursor to go into the water. In this screen, swim
(using the move cursor) up to the pool on the left side of the screen, and then
use the hand cursor to get out of the pool. Hurry, or you'll drown. Ignore the
chest at the bottom of the pool, as it has nothing in it. Now fill the bucket
with water by putting the bucket in your item box and then clicking on the
water. Now go one screen to the left. SWEET CHRISTMAS!!! There's a sleeping
dragon in here and more importantly, HE'S GUARDING THE MIRROR! Slowly approach
the dragon, and when he lifts his head up, throw the bucket of water at his
head to douse his flames! Bingo! The dragon is useless now, and disappears.
Grab that mirror, you clever scallywag! Save your game, and lets move on to
part two!

====================
b. The Magic Chest
====================

One treasure down, two to go! If you've been doing everything I've told you to
do thus far, you should have 53 points. From the cave you are in now, leave
through the hole in the wall on the left side. You're in a creepy cavern now.
Leave through the entrance in the top left corner. Now that you are back
outside, go one screen downwards, then one screen right. You should be back at
the old well. Now go one screen upward towards that ominous looking forest. Be
careful on this screen, as a witch may try to swoop down and grab you. If she
catches you, it means instant (though humorous) death. If she does attack you,
walk off the screen and walk on and off until she doesn't come after you.

From this screen, go one screen up and you'll end up at a gingerbread house
with some...odd looking gingerbread people outside. Before knocking on the
door, use the hand icon and take a bite of that tasty house. Now knock on the
door, and there shouldn't be any answer. Go ahead and enter, and you'll find
youself in the witches house. QUICKLY inspect the cupboard and grab the cheese
(a refined witch, indeed). Then run into the next room and pick up the note on
the table. Read the note by clicking it on yourself. Now that you are in this
room, stand by the wall that separates the two rooms so you won't be seen, and
wait. Soon, the horrid witch will enter the room and talk creepily to herself.
She'll then start stirring the cauldron. This is your chance to strike, Graham!
Muster up all your courage and get up behind her, then shove her into the
cauldron! YES! No more witches should be bothering you today, Graham. Looking
quite pleased with yourself, leave the house.

From the gingerbread house, go two screens up. You should now be in front of a
small cottage. Go ahead and enter. A woodcutter will talk to you about how his
wife is starving. Good thing we have that stew bowl! Give it to the woodcutter,
and then pick up his fiddle. Our work here is done. Now go two screens up and
one screen to the left. You'll find youself near a goat pen. Go ahead and open
up the pen. If the goat isn't in there, go inside the pen and one screen to the
right. Whenever you do find the goat, use the carrot on him and he'll start
following you. Make sure not to run too far ahead of the goat or you'll lose
him. Now, from the entrance to the goat pen, go one screen up and two screens
left. You'll be in a clover patch. Go ahead and pick up a clover, then go one
screen up. You'll be at a bridge now. Walk up to the bridge, and watch the
short cut scene. The goat, satisfied with itself, will have gone off. Walk one
screen up.

A gnome near some hay and a spinning wheel is whittling. Talk to the gnome and
he'll give you three chances to guess his name. Maybe this is a good time to
think about that note you found in the gingerbread house. "Sometimes it is good
to think backwards." Hmmm...Guess all you want, and if you are stumped, scroll
down.

The gnome's name is Nikstlitselpmur, apparently. That is indeed, the oddest
name I have ever seen. In any case, upon getting his name correct, the gnome
will give you some magic beans and disappear into his house. Nice!

If you've been following everything I've been telling you to, you should have
95 points now.

Okay. From the gnome's island, go two screens downward. Back in the clover
patch, plant the beans and watch what happens! Now...SAVE YOUR GAME! The next
part is extremely hard for most people, and you can and probably will die.
Climb up the beanstalk and you'll be at another screen. The trick to doing this
is to not concentrate on keeping Graham's hands on the stalk, but the center of
his torso. If you do that, you'll come out okay. Climb up the two beanstalk
screens and load your game if you fall.

When you come off of the beanstalk, you'll be walking on a cloud! Walk one
screen to the right, and be careful not to fall through a hole in the clouds.
Once you come out onto land, walk one screen to the right, then one screen
down. Walk two screens to the right and grab the slingshot from the tiny hole
in the bottom of the tree on the right side of the screen. Now walk one screen
upwards, and one screen to the left. ACK! A giant! And what is that he's
holding? Why, it's the magic chest, no doubt! You COULD hit him with a pebble
from your slingshot, but let's try to avoid violence here. Instead, run around
the screen away from the giant. Eventually, the giant will get tired and fall
asleep under a tree. Grab the chest! Now go one screen to the right and enter
the cave. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE!

It's time to do some tricky navigating. You'll have to walk step by step to the
exits to this curvy road, being careful not to fall off. A dwarf may try to
steal something of yours on the way, and if he catches you, you may lose an
important item. So, if the dwarf catches you, quickly check your inventory and
reload if something is gone. Usually, the dwarf won't take anything. Anyway,
proceed through the caverns until you come to a door. Open the door (well, the
door will really open for you), and you're back in Daventry. Good work! Two
treasures down, one to go.

====================
c. The Magic Shield
====================

If you've been following everything I've been saying, you should have 116
points right now.

From where you are now, go one screen up. You'll be in a forested area with a
bunch of walnuts on the ground. Pick one up, and then use it on yourself.
Apparently, the walnut had solid gold inside it! Now, go one screen upwards,
two screens to the left, two screens upwards, and one more screen to the left.
There should be a log with a hole in it in this area. Grab a pouch from a hole
in a nearby tree stump (it should be in the lower left corner of the screen).
Open the pouch by clicking it on yourself to find it filled to the brim with
diamonds! Now go two screens upward, and you'll find yourself at the entrance
to the dragon's former home. A huge bird is swooping through the area. Now,
here's what you should do. If you look closely at the ground, you'll see a very
small X etched into it. Stand on that X, and when the bird swoops by, use the
hand icon on its talons just as they pass over your head. With some practice,
Graham will grab onto them.

The bird will drop you into a small valley with a hole in the middle of it. DO
NOT GO DOWN THE HOLE! Instead, go around it and go one screen left. There will
be a mushroom growing near the side of the cliff. Pick it up and go one screen
to the right. Now drop down the hall. You'll fall into a small cavern. Go one
screen downwards, then go one screen right. SWEET CHRISTMAS! A giant, drooling
rat is guarding the door. Slowly walk close enough that you can talk with him,
but keep your distance. The rat will demand that you give him something.
Remember that cheese you picked up back in the gingerbread house? Hmmm...Take
the cheese and click it on the rat. He'll tell you to come close. Get just
close enough to the rat that you can reach him, and then give him the cheese.
The rat will snatch up the cheese and disappear. Now you can go through the
door.

In this room, two leprechaun guards will keep you from going any closer.
Luckily, you know that leprechauns LOVE music, and you have a fiddle! Use the
fiddle on yourself and the guards will dance away. Go one screen to the left.
The leprechauns in this room will also begin dancing themselves away, until
they're all gone. The king will be so overjoyed; he'll forget his scepter! Pick
it up, and then pick up *GASP* THE MAGIC SHIELD! That's all three treasures!
Daventry is saved! Now, if only you could get out of this cavern...

From the throne room, go one screen to the left. At the top of the hill, use
the mushroom to shrink. Then go out through the small hole.

If you've been following everything I've told you thus far, you should have 155
points.

When you come out of the pile of rocks, go two screens upwards. Then go two
screens right. Walk up to the portcullis of the castle, and use the hand cursor
on it. Congratulations! You've completed Kings Quest I VGA: The Quest For The
Crown, and have gotten every point possible doing it! Good job.

E. Monster Descriptions
===========================

There are many monsters and creatures roaming the land of Daventry. This
section will outline all of them and what they do. All of these monsters can be
avoided by simply walking off the screen when they attack.

Sorcerer/Wizard: A blue robed man who, while unable to hurt you, can cast a
freeze spell on you which renders you unable to move. This leaves your
venerable for other monsters, such as the dwarf, to come and kill you, or steal
from you.

Dwarf: This is an extremely quick dwarf, dressed in blue. He can't hurt you,
but he can run up to you and steal an item, preventing you from getting the 158
points. If this happens, reload your game. Be careful, this is the most common
enemy.

Ogre: This is a big green ogre (not Shrek) who will slowly lumber toward you
and beat you over the head, killing you. He's very slow and easy to dodge, and
should be no threat.

Witch: This is the monster I most hate. While she only shows up in the area
around her gingerbread house, she shoots out from nowhere, going very fast on
her broom. Whenever coming near her gingerbread house, walk slowly and get out
of there if she comes near you. Getting caught by here means death.

The Big Bad Wolf: This is a very fast monster that will rush towards you and
kill you on the spot if you don't get away in a hurry. The only thing you can
do with him is dart out of there.

Your...Fairy Godmother?: This is not an enemy, but randomly happens on a screen
north of the gnome's island. She just comes, says a few words, and casts a
spell on you that makes you immune to further attacks by random monsters for a
short period of time. The spell doesn't help that much, but she was worth
mentioning.

This was the first point-and-click adventure game I had ever played, and this
is the first full walkthrough for a game I have ever written. I hope you enjoy
this game as much as I did, and I hope you find this walkthrough useful in your
Quest For The Crown.
