01.) INTRODUCTION G0100
===============================================================================
Welcome to 'Nancy Drew: Treasure in a Royal Tower' for the PC, an adventure
game released by Her Interactive in 2001. This is the fourth Nancy Drew
adventure in the long-running series.
Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy! Usually I make sure
my guides are working 100% but for some parts I had to use my memory alone as
it was a few months after I had played it last that I had time to jolt this all
down. So for this guide in particular it would be good to hear back if it has
any errors in the events or puzzles.
===============================================================================
02.) BASICS G0200
===============================================================================
You control the game mainly with the mouse. Interact with objects when the
magnifying glass becomes red, move if it turns into an arrow. It is not too
often that you can turn around freely. You can also use the directional keys
to move left and right.
Note that if you open a chest or drawer you will also have to close it again
to move along. I won't mention this in the walkthrough at each instance. The
same goes for knocking and opening doors, that is really something you should
be able to figure out to be playing any adventure game.
There are many more features the game holds the walkthrough does not mention,
as there are already solved for you and therefore more or less extra contents.
The game is a little tricky whether some things are important to check or if
one can just miss out on it. The more thorough the better, but I believe only
the stuff mentioned in the walkthrough are really necessary.
The game offers two different difficulty levels. They do not alter the crime
solving in any way, but instead make the puzzles harder.
Time plays an important role in the game. Some people are only available at
certain times and at different locations. Next to Nancy's bed is an alarm clock
you can set to wake up at a certain time to either avoid or meet people around
the tower.
===============================================================================
03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300
===============================================================================
There are a couple of things you need to do without my help. One is to get used
to the surroundings, the layout of the tower. There are lots of deadends
upstairs but getting around is important for the entire game. Another thing is
to make note of when people are available at their post. Sometimes people sleep
or go to lunch, perhaps even go to another location.
First explore the room. Open the top drawer to find a food menu. Look at the
noisy radiator, it's important soon.
Then start exploring by going down to the reception. Talk to Dexter and e will
tell you to run an errand. Go through the lobby and talk to Jacques at the ski
shop. He will give you the ski boots. Go towards the lockers in the back and
attempt to open yours. The number is 310 and your combination is supposed to be
5 1 7. Between each number, set it with the arrow. If you made a mistake, the
center button resets the lock. But of course this combination does not work so
after you try it, talk to Jacques again. He will tell you about another locker.
Open that one if you wish, but there isn't much to do there. When he is on
lunch, however, take his brush he left behind.
Go to the professor's room upstairs and point down to the floor where you can
leave the boots.
Next you need to talk to Dexter again about another errant. Go back down the
lobby path and before you turn towards the ski shop, look at the circuit
breaker at this T-junction. Flip the third one from the top on the right side
to have light in the staircase. This also means you can go up and down another
method rather than the main stairs or the elevator.
I will mention this now as it might come up soon already. When you take the
elevator it will get stuck at some point. Look up in the back of the elevator
and climb up. Look around and find the door to get out. This only happens once
but usually early in the game. To fix the elevator, use the circuit breakers as
you just did. Simply pull the red lever.
Return to Dexter once again for a final task. Talk to the professor and return
to Dexter. He won't be happy about the request and says she should order
something from the menu. Talk to her again about the menu which you already
picked up at the start of the game. Slide the menu underneath the door and she
will finally order something from the menu. Return to Dexter to finally give
him the order. But you still have to run over to Jacques and tell him to get
the chicken.
Your radiator is now fixed, so go to your room and pick up the oil can. Set the
alarm for night. Talk to the Professor who will ask you some questions. Pick up
the paper she slid underneath the door and write down the answer with the
keyboard.
Q: How old was Marie Antoinette when she married King Louis?
A: 15
Q: How many days before her 38th birthday was Marie Antoinette executed?
A: 17
Q: What is the Model Number for the elevator?
A: 50964
Q: On what date was the Bastille prison destroyed during the French Revolution?
A: July 14, 1789
From now on she will hang out in the lobby between 3am and 6am. Go talk to her
there (sleep another day if you must), and you will receive her pass to her
room. Enter her room when she is not there, at the time she is in the lobby.
At the reception and open the drawer to find a key for the library.
Go up the professors room and play the video in the camera. When the movie
stops, place the battery in the charger and come back later to view the rest.
Ride the elevator to the bottom floor. Get up on the roof and climb higher
using the bars on the wall. At the top, enter the vent and climb all the way
through. Open the grate and climb out. As soon as you make a step on the
downward stairs you should hear keys. The subtitles help here. Quickly turn
around and return into the vent up the chair. You will see a scene with Dexter.
Jump back out and the alarm is now silent. Find these books:
- The Diary of Hans Axel von Fersen
- Atlas of the United States
- True Stories Behind Famous Portraits
- Purple Hearted Queen
When you see the dusty table near the hole in the wall, collect some dust with
the brush. Turn to the alarm and use the brush with dust on the pad. The code
is 3 * 7 2 for future reference. You need to use it every time you come in from
the main library entrance.
Look above the fireplace for another puzzle. There are two colored buttons. Red
is for resetting the puzzle whereas green sets the pointer. Move them in the
correct order, so they are -15, 10, -5. Return up the stairs to where you
climbed out from the vents and a new room has opened.
First light the candle with the lighter nearby to find an item inside it. Read
the poem on the desk, and the two books nearby.
Ride the elevator to the basement at night, then get up on the top and look
down. Nancy should mention about something being down there. Look around to
find a large lever. Use the oil can to make it work and then pull it once. Now
move the elevator to the first floor and get out the normal way. Enter the
library, switch off the alarm and climb back through the vent. Climb down the
steps to the bottom. Use the lever.
Soon you reach a door that goes right. That returns to the castle and is one-
way! Click left instead and solve the lock. It is random and requires simply
trial and error to get open. Start with any lock and when it stays open then
this is the correct start of the combination. Then continue with the 2nd until
you get all of them in the right order. Down the corridor you will find
somebody working here.
After the chat, return to Jacques when he is working and he will give you his
locker combination. Open it in the adjacent room. You will find something, but
also go back to sleep automatically.
Talk to Dexter when he is working, confess about being in the library or you
get locked up for the rest of the stay, i.e. Game Over. Talk to him about the
directions to get to the garden.
Leave the castle near the ski shop, and enter the shed. Look at the tools near
the wall to find the key to the tower. Return to the castle, then leave again
after getting some warm room temperature. You cannot make both the garden and
shed in one trip. When you see the Trespassing sign outside, go left. You won't
know this direction if you did not ask Dexter about it. Click the gate three
times to unlock it. Look at the vane and point it to the left towards the bust
in the corner. If you did this right you can closely examine the bust too. Open
the back. Use the key you found in the library candle to open it. This is the
Red Medallion.
Return to the tower entrance as before. Yes, it involves moving the elevator,
going through the library, down the shaft and solving the lock again. Unlock
the gate of the tower. Look at the armor standing next to it and remove its
lance. The first puzzle involves chains. It is always the same so follow these
directions: E, E, C, B, B, A, D, D.
Next up is a checkers puzzle. Look at the board to solve it. This is different
depending on your skill level. You need to get the colored pieces on their
respective tiles.
Junior: Pink up, left, up. Blue down, left, up. Blue right, down. Pink right,
down, left.
Senior: Pink left. Gray up, left, up. Blue left. Yellow up, left, down, left.
Pink up. Gray down, right, up, left, up. Blue up, right. Gray down,
left, up. Blue left, down. Gray right, up. Pink down, up, right, up,
left, down. Gray right, down, left, up.
Don't worry you only have to solve this puzzle once. Up the stairs is a room.
Look at the leaf pattern in the back to start yet another puzzle. Move the
pieces to make a picture. Junior difficulty only needs to move a few pieces to
complete it. First build the frame it is easy to recognize. The top frame
border is slightly thicker than the rest, whereas the sides are thin. The rest
shouldn't be too hard to figure out. There is a book to take, so with that in
hand run to the professor. She will help you if you give her 24 hours. So wait
and talk to her again. She will mention about the translations. Go to her room.
Watch the rest of the video with the newly charged battery. Lift up a pillow
from her sofa to find the Blue Medallion. Look at the book and translations
near the typewriter as well as the decoder next to it.
Return to the lobby during the day and talk to Lisa who you have ignored so
far. She should mention something to you. Go to your room and sleep so she can
leave you a message on the answering machine. Talk to her downstairs and leave
for the shed.
You are looked out. Inside the shed, find the Green Medallion near the rat. It
won't hurt you. Find the ski lift and its levers. Turn the middle one, then the
left one twice to get rescued.
Near the professor's room is a circular area in the corner with a small hole in
the wall. Insert each of the medallions and look through. Each time Nancy
should comment on it if you have read the decoder.
Return to the top of the tower, going through all required walks and puzzle
solving as you go. After decoding all the medallion pictures you should be able
to zoom on the portrait hanging here. Use the lance to break it and get a key.
Look at the panel on the floor and insert the red into the left side, green in
the middle and blue on the right. Finally, the key goes in the center.
After the scene, run out of the room and push the button on the wall to remove
the stairs.
Congratulations on finishing the game!
