CHARACTERS

In standand kit, there are 8 characters for you to play. After beating 
story mode, you will get more 5 scenario characters, 2 mini games, and 
expert mode. After beating expert mode, you get the spiritualist with 
glasses. Winning a 3 stars-opponent in Reversi, you get Dark spiritualist. 
Getting over 360 marks in shooting mini game, you get the female ninja, 
the mentor lady in story mode.

In power up kit, there are 8 characters in story mode and 16 extra 
characters in free mode. Most of them exist in standard kit but there 
are 8 new faces. You can unlock 2 more characters if you able to beat 
tournament mode (without Redo/Undo). One of them is our old friend, 
Deruna, the sorceress in VMO. The other is the war god.

Unlike VMO, each characters in VMJ have their own custom spell(s). 
Together with 8 standard spells, each master could have at most 11 spells. 
The custom spells are usually the update version of standard spells. Some 
custom spells are unique and powerful enough to turn the tables. In VMO, 
for master fighting violently at the front line is definitely not a good 
idea. But in VMJ, master with their shocking attack spell, usually fight 
better than the natials. Suppose you choose a master who has excellent 
combat skills, you always hide him in order to avoid being killed. I 
would tell you it is certainly a terrible waste. Always having something 
for master to do, don't waste any turns. Otherwise, you lose comparatively 
in the long run.

Maximum level in VMJ is 50 (40 in VMO). Maximum values for each ability is 
26 (20 in VMJ with one exception - magic defense of Nightmare). A level 25 
summoner in VMJ is approximately the same level summoner in VMO. The 
statistics for natials in VMJ is slightly larger than that in VMO. 
Standard level in VMJ is 30, and it is 25 in VMO. 

The grade marked on attack or magic are OA time factor. See calculation 
guide for details. A better grade corresponds to a faster action.

comment : A traveling swordsman. His blade has its own mind and very 
talkative. The name of blade should be Pomegranate (not by pronunciation),
a name of plant. Although he is a little libidinous, he has really a 
strong sense of justice. In the game, he is a very strong melee fighter 
(not the strongest). His defensive power is high, giving him more chance 
to cast his custom spell. He is a bomber type like Lobster king. I like 
him.

comment : One of the best sorceress in great Shinto temple. Looks very 
cool, emotionless and has iron-willed at heart. She always dances lonely 
at midnight. As she is the only magician type character in story mode, 
she has pretty high magic power and a very destructive spell - seamless 
jewel. Her attack spell together with her magic power is enough to tear 
apart multiple number of enemies in one shot. She is a walk type, her 
move distance is only 3 and her agility is not so high. Meaning that 
she is not a good magic stone grabber. Don't expect so much on her, 
there are still many excellent magicians in this game.


Foreigner (Lorenz or Rorenso)

comment : A foreigner with both Japanese and foreign paternity. Travels 
to the Far East as an envoy. What he see in Japan is very different from 
what he had imagined. Finally, he decised to save this land. A first 
glance over his stats, he is not too bad. Magic power is reasonably high, 
and his defensive power is quite high. Not to mention that he has the 
strongest attack spell and aura type healing spell. His physical attack 
may be very low, but who needs physical attack if the great devil always 
fights on your side. Be fair, he is not so fast. Maybe he is easier to 
finish story mode.


Marine hunter (Shuren)

comment : She and her horde live near water. She is a shy girl since her 
horde are rarely communicated with outsiders. After the assaults of 
"Falling Stars", she senses something unusual in nature. She knows there 
will be a upcoming calamity. She went to Japan to seek for solution. As 
a fisher, she adepts at swimming. Her move distance is not reduced even in 
water. Her move is 6 (the highest value for summoners) and her agility is 
above average. As a result, She is almost the best magic stone hunter in 
this game. She can fire a spear. Yes, range attack but not very strong. 
She knows Thunder Boom, but she does not use it very well. Without high 
defensive power and magic power, this spell does not match her.


Ninja master (Rokurou)

comment : A well trained ninja. He has a complex background. We do not know
too much about his past. For the name of ninja, his mobility is really high. 
No one can match his quickness in this game. He somersets instead of walk 
so he moves fast in water. As a ranger, he fights better than Shuren. The 
ninja know a murdering spell - Devil of Plague, 100% guarantee to kill their
enemies. In fact, there are some ways to cure. At last, there are 3 ninja in
this game. I still think he is the best one. But be careful that his magic 
power is the lowerest in this game.


Princess (Kikuka)

her statistics. I can tell you that you are definitely wrong. She knows 
a unique spell named Fighting Princess, which can boost up all stats for 
all friendly units. It costs only 64 MP. Maybe, she should be the best
summoner in this game. 


Sinful monk (Takuwan)

comment : He is a informal monk, has many ill-advised actions. He has been 
a prisoner but he already escaped from the jail. He is not actually a bad 
guy but a sufferer of "Falling Stars". In the game, he has most powerful 
physical attack. (AT 26 at LV 50 + range 6 Large projectile) Majority of 
middle class natials facing him may receive "star hit". He is the analogue
of Savage in VMO. 


Buddhist monk (Satsuha)

up magic tools. There is a rare beast followed him. I think it should 
be the same kind of ChewChew in VMO. My RPG experience tell me that he
is a priest (not even existed in world of VMO). The priest in most RPG 
games has healing spell plus magic dispel spell. They have moderate 
defensive power and they are usually very slow. He certainly suits well.
I don't know whether a priest type summoner is useful or not in world 
of VM. Maybe he can help you to protect high level natials. Last but 
not least, he can fly.

may be his only weakness. However, I am afraid he doesn't need magic

She is a fortune teller and also a farseer. You may think she must be 
so serious but actually, she is very humorous. Her attack type is Occur,
meaning that there is no way to block her attack. That is, damages does
not depend on facing direction of enemy. Unfortunately, her attack power
is so weak to make it useful. Her magic power and defense are highest 
among all summoners, really a magic talent. But be careful that her move 
is only 2. At last, if you are careful enough, you may discover that she
can recover herself.


Taoist wizard (Shadai)

battles. To investage the reasons, main advantage over him is his flying 
ability plus his move distance 4. However, his abilities are below 
average. As a priest type summoner, He is not as good as Satsuha. 


Sentinel (Isami)

comment : A sentinel serving in the other great temple in Japan (may be
a different religion).  She acts always before she thinks, a troublemaker
in game. In scenario mode, you have many chances to taste her blade. She
is definitely the best fighter in this game (analog to the knight in VMO).
Personally, I think she is even better than the knight in VMO. Because 
she has high mobility and speed but the knight haven't. She knows a great 
spell - Hyper Yama Ram. Unfortunately, her magic power does not make it 
useful.


Missioner (Mary Lu)

You have to fight her in scenario mode. The battle shouldn't be too tough
because she is quite slow. She has a unique spell - God Blessing, which
can heal 4 HP for all friendly units. As a priest type summoner, her stats
are highest. So I think she is the best priest in this game. As a defender,
lack of mobility is a problem which can still be overcomed. 


Ninja heroine (Kiri)

Her stats tends to be worse than that of Rokurou except the magic power. 
The point is that she does not have a range attack like Rokurou. However,
as a magic stone hunter, her magic power is quite high. It should be a 
good compensation for her.


Dark spiritualist (Muu)

and it is only a straight line type attack spell. However, she has a 
move distance of 4 and she has HP recovery ability. As a magician, she 
may be better than Himika but still not the best.


Spiritualist with glasses (Hazuki)

Her defensive ability is shameful and her magic power is not so high 
either. Nevertheless, she is the others who can move 6. She do not 
know how to fight but she can ban enemies 's magic in normal attack. 
Note that the effective time depends on her normal attack not her 
magic power. To be honest, if I really want to play with magic banning, 
I perfer choosing Satsuha to her.

The analogue of her in VMO is Granas, the ranger. She is not poor at all, 
but other rangers in this game are too strong.

Both of them know Golden Madness which ables to turn multiple number of 
enemies into gold. He has a unique spell called Shining Birdcage which can 
lower the statistic for multiple number of enemies. You will regret for
underestimating him.


Sumo fighter (Raika)

quickly send his slaves to do it for him. He has Thunder Boom as well. 
If you don't feel confident, don't rush to him. He is not as good as 
Momosuke, but still very strong.


Ninja chemist (Chizuru)

adepts at toxicology and her attack carries basic damages plus poisoning 
effect. Her attack range is quite long to be comparable with other 
rangers.


Demon Lord (Daruku Fakuto)

comment : The evil priest in YS eternal 1. While Adol is gone, no one 
can even match him. If you want a easy win in tournament mode, choose 
him. There are so many advantages on him. Firstly, he flys and he has 
move distance 5. He grabs magic stone faster than most characters. 
There is also no ways to chase him if he is running out of HP. (Cannot 
block his way) Secondly, he has 2 wonderful magic. Death Zone is the 
strongest large-scale attack spell which has effective range of 6 and 
magic gain bonus of 4. Enhanced Ghost Flame is a long range support 
spell which does not require you a lot of MP to cast. Not to mention 
that it has a larger magic gain bonus than that of Ghost Flame and it 
can be targeted himself. Thirdly, he can fight because of his high 
attack and his not so bad defense. In my opinion, he outbalances the 
other summoners.


Queen (Dora)

comment : A famous character in Brandish series. The last version should
be Brandish 3. It was still using 16 colors in display. So you can expect
that it is a pretty old. It is for sale only in Japanese. Maybe, you don't
have a chance to taste it. Now, the queen comes back. She is an attack 
type magician. She has 2 attack spell and her attack is 16 at level 50. 
Booby Trap costs only 1 MP. I treat it as a special attack. Hyper Yama
Ram becomes very terrible on her hands because of her high magic power. 
Perhaps she wears too less, her defensive power is always very bad (Both 
VMO and VMJ). I don't know the reason why she can move so fast in water.


Villager (Lilia)

game, she is in between a priest and a magic stone hunter. She cannot 
withstand any attacks owing to her poorest defensive powers. Statue of
Goddess is a unique spell for her. She can heal herself if she get hurt.
Even you don't want to waste her turn in healing, she can recover herself
turn by turn. Try to use her if you want more challenges.

stealing spell only for him. He knows how to poison as well. In my 
opinion, he outbalances the others to a certain extend. Of course, 
he is secret character.

comment : The ultimate summoner in VMJ (In VMO, the ultimate summoner is
the half-beast). Although she doesn't have a highest magic power, I am
still counting her as the best magician. She knows so many different 
magic including healing, supporting, attacking and charming. All of them
are at top grade. Her charming attack is a range attack and does not 
spell any MP. The drawback is the effectiveness of spell depends on her
attack not her magic power. What a pity! She is winning in magic power.
I believed that she will be the best summoner if she is faster.


That is the end of character 's introduction. Now I would like to share
some of my experiences on how to choose a character to play with. It is 
particularly useful on network game. Consider a fair game - (symmetrical
map, same level, no handicaps on abilities). 

For LV < 20, magician type summoners, magic stone hunter have advantages.
At such level, no summoners are able to fight against Natials, even 
middle class natials. As a result, number of natials summoned determines
between defeat and victory. As a general tactic, who gets more magic 
stones, who is winner. If the magic power is high, MP recovery rate 
will be larger. Both situations are effectively the same. This rule 
holds in VMO as well.

For LV > 40, fighter type summoners win out. If you are careful enough,
you may find that there are several fighters having both their defensive
powers over 24. I can tell you they are really high statistics. With such
defensive skills, most natials cannot take more than 1 damage. The 
effective time for freezing, downgrading, magic binning is no more than
60 mins. So natials are virtually useless against the summoners. Even you
choose a master winning in foot race, your movement is still highly 
restricted. Because you dare not approaching your enemies - the fighters 
who able to kill one natial per turn.

There are some abilities or magics which effects do not depend on level 
(e.g poison, healing).  The characters having more level independent 
skill win out at low level (e.g priests, ninja). In contrast, for 
characters having more level dependent skill win out at high level 
(e.g magicians)

At last, all characters are generally balanced around LV 30.
  
Choosing you character according to the chosen map is another point. 
In a forest, flyers have advantages. On a mountain hill, archers and 
flyers have advantages. In a lake, ninja and swimmers have advantages.
In a labyrinth, rangers and flyers do not have their advantages. In 
contrast, priests win out. In a large map, magicians win out because 
it contains more magic stones. That will be a battle between natials 
and natials. In a small map, fighters win out because number of magic 
stones are limited. That will be a battle between summoner and summoner.

Of course, it is only a reference for those who are new to Vantage 
Master. If you are a real master, I believe you can beat your computer
with 10-20 level difference over you no matter which characters and 
which map are chosen. To be honest, it is far too difficult for me 
to do this. 


APPENDIX - MAGIC AND SPELL

In general, attack spells cannot be casted on friendly units; cure 
spells cannot be casted on enemy units. A large scale spell do not 
distinguish enemy and friendly units, there are effects on the 
spellcaster also. Facing direction of natials, land effect may affect
the effectiveness of certain spells including healing spell. See 
calculation guide for details.
