Final

And this guide is almost completing 1 year! But about the changes, David Parr
came with a nice idea of how to mod the controller and make it work both on
the PC and in the Xbox without the need of an extra connector cable! Also Iīll
change the rank of optional to necessary the need of solder and soldering iron
to this mod. Not using those itens will make the mod very unreliable and the
chances of a wire disconnecting is very high after a time you do the mod. Some
extra corrections were also made.

Section 02 - About the Author
About me? Well, Iīm just a regular college student currently studing Computer
Science. Since I was a kid I loved to disassemble every electonic thing that
I could find. That resulted in many 220 V chocks and many other injuries. I
managed to survive my childhood (as you can notice reading this FAQ) and
fortunately I kept disassembling everything I could find, but now I am able
to avoid chocks, and the better, I can assemble the thing back again and it
works (most of the time)!
I ask you not to notice any major grammar/spelling error. I am not from the
US and as you can notice, english is not my native language, so you are
surely going to find mistakes in this guide. Ignore them or contact me so I
can fix them. I would really apreciate it.

Section 03 - About this Guide/FAQ
Well, first of all, you should ask yourself why are you browsing this guide.
There can be thousands of reasons. The reason that I am writing it is to help
people who donīt have a neat PC Controller, people who are looking forward to
buy a PC controller but think that the ones available are a piece of crap or
are too expensive and like the X-Box one, people who love the X-Box controller
(my case, big hands are a problem, the original controller fits perfectly for
me) and think that their PCs deserve this fine hardware. Or any other reason/
cause/circunstance available.
And note that Iīm going to make this guide so that the lamest and n00b guy can
mod the controller. Iīm going to detail many many things, so if you already
know that (or thing you know), just skip the section, altough I woudnīt
recommend that. This guide was made to be fully read, so skip any section at
your own risk. And come on, so much trouble it gave me to write it... Please
read it! :)

Section 04 - Necessary tools
Okay, you are really willing to mod your X-Box controller. There are a few
things you will need, fortunately VERY easy to find stuff, which makes this
guide easy to almost anyone to do. If you are lucky, you can buy everything
that is necessary on that Wal-Mart next to your home. If you canīt find
something there, try a Radio Shack etc. But I am sure you wonīt have trouble
finding it.
A - Screwdriver (optional) - You need a simple screwdriver you are going to do
one of the modding option that requires the X-Box controller to be opened. You
need a medium size one, not huge, not small, with a grip long enough so you
can take out the screws that are on the X-Box controller, and later, put them
back.
B - Soldering Iron (necessaryl) - You need one soldering iron so you can melt
the solder and use it on the wires of the X-Box controller. Be careful kids,
getting burned by this thing hurts a lot. I know that very well.
C - Solder (necessary) - Necessary if you want to do a nice and long-lasting
mod. To be used together with the soldering iron. But, as you want to do a
nice and long-lasting controller, youīll use it.
D - Electrical Tape (necessary) - Regular size electrical tape (usually it has
~1 inch of width). Necessary to avoid short-circuits and problems of the sort.
E - Wire Cutter (necessary) - To cut the wires (duh). A similar tool like a
knife, pocket knife can be used altough it is not recommended since a wire
cutter is much easier to handle and accurate. The chance of you screwing up
your mod with is is much smaller than using any other tool.
F - USB Cable (necessary) - To plug the controller in your PC. Ok, now read
this carefully. You need any USB cable that has an A Male connector. Read the
USB Cable Issue section below for further info. Only one A Male connector is
necessary, the other one is useless. About the lenght, I would recommend a
3 meter long cable (~9 feet). It is not too short nor too long. Longer cables
may have some problem with external interference, so I would not recommend
using a cable longer than 3 meters. But, do as you wish, my advice is given.
G - Voltimeter (optional) - Donīt buy this thing since it is optinal and it is
really expensive. You can just use it later to test the connections you made.
H - Security X-Box Controller Conector (optional) - If you manage to find one,
buy an extra one or get from a broken down controller. It will be EXTREMELY
useful since you will be able to use the controller back on your X-Box anytime
you wish, while cutting the wire itself make this change somehow irreversible.
You can still change it back to work again on the X-Box, but it is not
recommended.

Section 05 - USB Cable Issue
Alright, this thing can be kinda tricky, so I decided to make a section just
for it. When you are going to buy an USB cable, you can get kinda lost since
there are thousands of kinds of cables. And you need THAT kind of cable. The
chance that you buy the wrong one is very high.
You gotta understand that there are 4 types of USB connectors. I am going to
describe them the best I can.
A - USB A Connectors

The most common connector available. And the one you are going to need. You
probrably have seen on before. It looks like this thing below...

Note that the border is metallic and the # part is made of plastic. Usually
white.

The two # that you can see are two holes in the metallic part that is will be
connected. The part before it is made of plastic or rubber and has that thing
over it (okay, I know itīs ugly but I did my best) is the USB Logo. You have
seen it before somewhere. I know it!
\Female
Letīs just say. It is the opposite of the male connector. It is where the male
thingy should go (got now why it is called female, and the other one, male?).
This is the one that your computer has (well, It is supposed to). And when you
buy an extension cable, it always have a male connector in one end of the
cable and a female in the other.

Again, it is almost the same thing as the male, but there is no metal thing
outside of it, usually it has some little metal things like those /\ in the
picture. Just to help when you connnect the male connector.
B - USB B Connectors

Okay, now things change a little. I think the most common cables available are
the A (Male) - B (Male) cables. Below you can check how a B Male USB connector
looks like.

It is indeed kinda different from the A type connector. The white part
between the borders and the # is made of plastic, usually white, and the # is
just empty space.

As you can see, it is slightly smaller than the A connector.

I could spend another few lines babbling about this rare to find B Female USB
connector, but I donīt think it is necessary. With all the info provided above
you are not going to buy the wrong cable and in any other part of the guide
that I mention the kind of connector, you will know what I am talking about
or if you have any doubt, take a quick look at this section and all your
doubts shall be gone.

Section 06 - Before you start...
Okay, you bought all necessary stuff. You have an X-Box controller in your
possesion and you are ready to make the mod. Some things you should know
before doing it.
-Stuff can (and according to Murphyīs Law, will) go wrong. Keep that in mind.
If you follow EXACTLY what I say here, the odds will decrease, but they will
always exist. Be prepared to face problems. Luckly everything will go fine and
your X-Box controller will work on your PC as it is supposed to.
-Take your time. Donīt do this in a hurry. Spend a sunday afternoon that you
always have nothing to do, doing this mod instead of friday night, when you
are tired, have something to do or want to go to sleep.
-Do it in a large and old table. Kids, donīt do this in your mamma dinning
table. You can drop solder, scratch it with a knife, the wire cutter or any
other tool that you have with you.
-This may be kinda obvious, but do it in a place that has light. You will
need to see everything you are making.
-If you donīt have experience with soldering irons and solder, ask help from
a friend/parent/dog that has more experience than you. It is not complicated
but try to use it first doing other things. When you have acquired a some EXP
points of handling it, use it in the X-Box controller.
-Optional things are optional. The better you do your modding, the longer it
will last, fewer problems you will have. Do it nice and you wonīt have to do
it again.
-I wonīt be responsible for any **** you may make. You are doing this at your
OWN risk. Donīt blame me for anything that goes wrong. Blame your parents/dog/
friends/girlfriend. Not me.
-Stactic eletricity. It is hard to happen, but you may fry your controller
board just by touching it if you are charged. To avoid this, simply touch a
large metal plate, your computer case for example. That should do it.
-This may seem kinda obvious, but make sure your PC has an USB port available.
Any PC built since 1999 comes with an USB port at least. It is not necessary
to have a new high-speed 2.0 USB port. This works even with the older 1.0 USB
ports and the 1.1 ones. You donīt know the version of your USB port? Relax.
There isnīt any 0.9 version! :)
-Mac/Linux/BeOS/Any other OS users: I cannot guarantee that the controller
will work with you. I have just tested with Windows 2000/XP/2003 PCs. The
problem you will find is actually that you may not find. Drivers. If you
manage to find one and test it, please tell me where did you find the drivers
and what you have done to install it. I will include in this guide and you
will get full credits.
-Windows 9X/ME users: Thanks to Moose, he confirmed me that this mod, with the
drivers I provided, works under Windows 98. Still, I canīt confirm that it
works with Windows 95/ME. If you manage to test this mod on those OSs and
confirm me, you will get full credits for it!

Section 07 - The modding
*** DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK ***
You know that now. This mod works for both versions of X-Box Controllers. The
Original Version and the S Version. Do it with the one that pleases you most.
During the guide I will mention the differences that you will find and what
you have to do in each version of the controller.
There are several kinds of ways that you can make the mod. The differences are
in the place that you replace the wire/x-Box connector for the USB cable/
connector. Again, do as you please, Iīll try to explain what are the benefits
of each kind of mod available.
--Differences between the Original and the S controller
The main difference is the size. The Original Controller is much larger than
the S one. Other difference is that the White and Black buttons are located
above the Y and B buttons in the Original Version, while in the S Version,
they are under A and B buttons. Also, the Start and Back buttons are located
in the middle of the Original controller while those buttons are under the
left analog stick on the S controller.
--What is going to be modded on the controller?
The cable or the connector. You choose. The important thing is that the X-Box
Controller conector is replaced by an USB connector. You may do that directly
to the Controller board, or next to it, cutting all the X-Box Controller cord
out, or in any other part of the cord. Or using an extra Security X-Box
Controller Conector, you can do a replaceable mod, that you can switch when
you please. Since it is detachable, you just keep the original one and put the
one you modded when you wish to use the controller on the PC and vice-versa.
--Where should I change the Connector?
Below, you can see the Security X-Box Controller Conector and the rest of the
controller cord. Sorry, rude design. It is not needed to be pretty, you just
have to understand what I am trying to tell you.

If you are going to use a spare Security X-Box Controller Connector, the point
A is where you should cut cord. Now, if you donīt plan to cut this part and
you think that cutting other part is better, here are the strategic cutting
points of the rest of the cord.

Here are two other points that you could consider cutting. I would stick with
the first one that you do on the Security X-Box Controller Conector instead of
those. Since you are going to waste the X-Box cord anyway, it would be nicier
to do in the Security X-Box Controller Conector or inside the controller. This
way the whole cord stays in only one color.
If you wish to take the whole cord out and replace it inside the X-Box
controller, read Step A, otherwise, jump to step 2.

Step A - Disassembling the controller
Believe me. It is not hard. Here is where the screwdriver comes to action. To
disassemble the Original Controller, you have to take out 7 screws that are
clearly visible in the back of the controller. In the S version, you also have
to take out 7 screws. 6 of them are clearly visible. One is hidden under that
nasty code bar sticker. Just take the sticker out or make a hole in it. You
wonīt have any major problems taking the screws and opening the controller.
Remeber to save the screws since you are going to need them later.
After removing the screws, turn your controller so that the buttons are facing
the table and gently remove the back of the controller from the front. Doing
this will avoid you some trouble of making all buttons and rubbers detach from
the front of the controller. If this happens, donīt panic, just assemble it
back again. Each button can fit in only one place, and the rubbers are made to
fit just one way.
Well, now you are going to see some differences between the S and the Original
controller. The main thing are the motors, that are screwed to the case in the
Original and loose, on the S. The fist thing to do is to detach their plugs
that go to the controller board. Do that GENTLY. They do not require force,
but care. After that, save the motors in the S version (and remember, the
larger one goes to the left side of the controller while the small one goes to
the right side.
Now, in the S version there are 2 screws that you will have to take out. They
are located near the memory card slot. In the original version, there are four
extra screws besides the ones near the memory card slot that need to be taken
out. Do that carefully and save those screws too.
After doing that, youīll have the controller board loose, together with some
plastic pieces of the memory card slot. Carefully, remove those pieces of
plastic so that you will have just the board and the cord. Now, to the next
step!

Step B - Cutting the wires
Right. If you chose to open your controller and etc, hang on a minute. You
that chose to cut in one of the recommended points, cut the controller cord
with the wire cutter. Remove about 1 inch of the plastic cover and the
aluminum cover.
The ones with the controller opened, cut the cord as far as possible of the
board, so this way you can have plenty of wire to work with. I would recommend
just before that plastic thing that sticks outside and inside the controller.
Remove the plastic and the aluminum.
Now, do the same to the USB Cable you bought. Please, do that cutting the
connector that is not the A Male one. Do it in the oposite side and discard
the extra connector. Take the plastic and the aluminum cover, again, about 1
inch and you will find some colored wires.
There should be 6 wires in the X-Box controller and 5 in the USB cable. The
USB cable should have RED, WHITE, GREEN, BLACK (thin) and a colorless wire.
Not that is colorless, but it has no plastic cover and this wire is to prevent
interference. When opening the X-Box controller, this black wire will come out
from the controller board with a thick black plastic cover. The X-Box
controller should have all wires mentioned above plus one YELLOW wire.
Ignore this wire, cut it out. You wonīt be needing the YELLOW wire.
With the wire cutter, remove from wich wire that is inside both cords, the
plastic thing that protects each wire. Remove about 1/2 inch from each.
Be extra carefull. This is one easy to do wrong thing. Apply little force with
the wire cutter when taking out the plastic protection. It is very easy to
break the wire or to do something of the sort. If you never done anything like
this before, ask for help.

Now thereīs one alternative of how to mod your controller and use it both on
the PC and on the Xbox without the need of an extra connector! You should
thank David Parr for this idea!
Well, it is very tough to do it and will require your l33t wire-cutting skills
to do it! Since I cannot put any pictures on the FAQ, Iīll explain to you the
best way I can.
Grab the security connector and with the wire cutter, remove the green plastic
cover from the connector leaving ~1 inch of unremoved cover from both sides
(the connector that goes to the Xbox and the one that connects to the rest of
the cord).

I beg your pardon for the rude scheme. But you got it, remove the plastic
cover (including that thing in the middle) from the points A to B. Itīs not
that tough if you use another blade help.
Now comes the tough part. Youīll have to leave after the removed cover on both
sides ~1 1/2 inches of the colored wires after the end of the cover. Youīll
cut them after this except the yellow one. It will be tough to do that and if
you prefer, you can also cut the yellow one but youīll have to reconnect it
later.
Now, with the ~1 1/2 inch wires, cut their plastic cover leaving 1/2 inch of
them without the cover. Now, connect the wires as the next step says, but
remember to direct the USB connector to the same side as as the Xbox connector
and the difference is that now youīll have to connect 3 wires together. Youīll
link the connector wires with the Xbox connector (if you did not cut, the
yellow wire will be uniting them) and the USB cable). Thereīs no big deal
about it. I know it may be sorta impossible, but NEVER EVER THINK ABOUT
CONNECTING THE CONTROLLER BOTH ON THE XBOX AND ON THE PC AT THE SAME TIME.
THAT WILL SURELY SCREW THE CONTROLLER, THE PC USB PORT AND THE XBOX CONTROLLER
CONNECTOR. You should use the USB connector just with a few inches of cable,
a little longer than the wire with the plastic cover with the Xbox connector.
You could use as mentioned before, the full lenght of the USB cable, but that
wonīt be very nice.

Now will all wires ready, follow to the next step.

Step C - Connecting the wires
This may sound kinda simple, but it is tricky. Connect each wire of the same
color together. The RED from the USB cable with the RED of the X-Box
controller and so on. Remember that the YELLOW wire from the USB controller is
not necessary, so just ignore it, take it out, do whatever you please. And
remember the wire that has no plastic cover. It may seem dumb, but it is nice
to connect it to the one on the X-Box cable (it is in the same position as the
one in the cable, right under the aluminum cover).
Connect the wires just twisting on in the other other one. Gently. Do this
with all wires. Remember not to mix any wire with other kind etc. After doing
this, youīll leave a drop of solder in each connected wire to make sure they
wonīt come out. After doing this, wrap each connected wire with electric tape.
Do it nicely and make sure no wire gets exposed. After doing that to each
wire, put electric tape around all wires, so they remain as a big one. Leaving
all wires loose increase the chance of it coming out when pulled or anything
of the sort.
If you disassembled your controller, wait a second before assembling it again.

Step D - Testing your controller
Perfect. You connected all wires and you are ready to make it ready for
action, right? Fisrts, if you disassembled you controller, just plug it into
the PC and check if Windows detects an USB Device or an USB Game Controller.
If it does, go to the next step. If not, consider checking all wires and make
sure everything I said before is fine.
If you didnīt disassemble the controller, skip the next step.

Step E - Assembling the controller
This is piece of cake. Adjust the cord with the 2 plastic pieces that go with
the memory card slot, after that, put it in the controller board, put the
board back to its place and attach the motors plugs. Remember, the large one
goes to the left side of the controller (where the digital stick is located)
and the small one goes to the right side (where the buttons are). After that,
screw all screws that attach the board to the controller case, then put it
over the front case (remember, you left if facing the table so the buttons
woudnīt fall). Attach it the put all the screws in the back of the controller.
Everything should be fine.

Step F - Installing the drivers
Now the final part to make your X-Box controller perfectly playable on your
computer! When you plug it into the USB, Windows will ask you for its drivers.
I've tried to host the drivers myself hundreds of times, but I never got a
decent server which worked for a long time. I'm gonna leave them hosted
at a server at my college, which should last long enough. If you can't
download it, search "XBCD" in Google. You should find it without any major
problems.

Download this file at your OWN RISK. I am not responsible for any damages
this file might cause to your computer.
Take your time reading the included readme. You will find important info there
about the functions of the controller and some button combinations that allow
you to do some tweaks in it.
But when Windows ask for the drivers, choose the option "Search for a suitable
driver for my device.", then click next, check the box "Specify a location.",
click next. Then point the location where you decompressed the driverīs files.
You are going to see a message that the driver was not tested by Microsoft.
Click in Continue anyway.
After that you can check the Game Controllers in the Control Panel to change
some options, play with the rumble (Iīm still trying to find a way to make it
"workable", like a rumble pack in a Nintendo 64 emulator or something of the
sort.
Any other help you need, be sure to read the documentation included with the
drivers before asking me. You can find almost any answer to the questions you
might have.

Section 08 - Using the controller as a Memory Card manager
Well. Now that your controller is working fine, you are having lots of fun
playing your favorite games on your PC with your favorite game controller, I
think that you wonder sometimes, if you could have another use for this
fantastic mod you did on your beloved X-Box controller. The answer is YES!
As you could see in the section title, you can use the X-Box controller as
an x-Box Memory Card manager!
Well, I cannot guarantee that, since I donīt have a memory card with me. But
you could give a try, and tell me if that works. It is supposed to...
First of all, you need to download and install Action Replay for X-Box. I will
not host this software on my server since Iīm not certain that it is legal.
But you can download it from its official website in the following link:

Download it. Install it. Run the icon that was created on your desktop. I can
not give you further help now. It seems quite simple and easy to use. You
should just dranīn drop the icons from the memory card to the PC database and
vice-versa.
The advantages of using this manager is that you can send your save files to
your friends over the internet, download save games from the Code Junkies web
site (http://us.codejunkies.com/), backup your X-Box saves on your PC and much
more!
Jesse tested this software under Windows 98, and according to him, it works
like a charm! And according to Shane OīBrien, it also works under Windos XP!
