About the game:

   Lamento - Beyond the Void is a Boys Love (that is, boy x boy
 romance) PC game developed by Nitro+Chiral that was released
 on October 27, 2006. The game has only been released in Japan
 and exists only in Japanese, so please don't go around asking
 for an English version -- there isn't one. This guide exists
 to help English-speaking people play the game with less
 difficulty. Though keep in mind that the game is so
 ridiculously long and text heavy (most of the text is novel-
 like descriptive text that isn't voiced), so if you can't
 understand ANY Japanese... good luck. I guess you can
 at least enjoy the pretty graphics and voices!

   Anyway, the game is an 18+ (adults only!) text adventure
 featuring great voice acting (see the voice actors section).
 There are 60 save game slots (you can save anywhere) and
 143 CGs (including background images) to unlock. The
 following walkthroughs are SPOILER-FREE and will just
 give you the basics info you need to collect all of the
 CGs and endings.

   Please also note that names, terms, decisions and whatnot
will all be given in both English and Japanese, so make sure
you're viewing the document with the proper Japanese text
encoding so you see Japanese text instead of funny symbols.

Introduction to the story:

   The game takes place in a fictional world inhabited by
Ribika (who look like humans but have cat ears and tails).
Their world has fallen into dark times -- a mysterious void
has made some places (and even animals) impossible to touch,
causing major food shortages. A strange and deadly disease
is also spreading.

   The hero, Konoe (who you guide through the game), exists in
this miserable world, living alone in the starving village
of Karou. The story begins with Konoe in Karou, where he
suddenly begins to see horrible dreams...

                           PART II
             ===================================
           ||            Characters             ||
             ===================================

[Ribika]

   Konoe (コノエ): The main character of the story. Is from a
                    village called Karou, where he lives alone.
                    He is self-conscious of his tail, which is
                    hooked at the end. He doesn't like being
                    around fire, so he keeps his room lit at
                    night with a Michishirube no Ha (if I
                    suddenly use a strange term like that,
                    it's probably explained in Section III, so
                    go look there!)

   Rai (ライ): A silver-haired cat who wears an eyepatch.
                    He's a skilled bounty hunter who wields two
                    swords and has a cold attitude. His
                    catchphrase of sorts is calling everyone
                    "bakaneko" (stupid cat).

   Asato (アサト): A simple-minded warrior from a village
                   called Kira. He has dark skin and black
                   fur. He's extremely socially awkward and
                   has a hard time with crowds and a very
                   simple, almost child-like way of speaking.
                   Despite his awkwardness, he is very loyal
                   and protective of those he likes.

   Bardo (バルド): A striped cat who owns an inn in Ransen.
                   He's an older cat who's wiser and more
                   experienced than the rest of the cast.
                   He has a cheerful attitude and is good
                   at cooking for his inn's guests.

[Devils/Demons]

   Razel (ラゼル): The Devil of Wrath. He can manipulate
                   fire. Despite his title, he's actually
                   usually calm and collected.

   Verg (ヴェルグ): The Devil of Pleasure. He can
                    manipulate lightning. He's a quick-
                    tempered demon who hates Ribika.

   Kaltz (カルツ): The Devil of Grief. Can manipulate
                   water. He's a gloomy-looking demon
                   who prefers being alone and keeping
                   conversations short.

   Froud (フラウド): The Devil of Joy. Can manipulate
                     wind. A strange demon who always
                     seems friendly and happy, but his
                     true feelings are more difficult
                     to read.

[Villains]

   Leaks (リークス): A mysterious magician with a
                     deep hatred for the world.

   Firi (フィリ): A strange boy who is neither Ribika
                  nor demon who often appears in Konoe's
                  path to provoke him.

   Ul / Kil (ウル / キル): Twin cats who have targeted
                     Konoe. They work as a team, with
                     Kil as the Touga and Ul as the
                     Sanga.

[Etc]

   A Poet (歌うたい): A mysterious singing cat who often
                      appears before Konoe during the story.

   Kagari (カガリ): A white-haired cat from Kira. The only
                    female in her village. She's a strong
                    fighter who cares for Asato as if he
                    were family.

   Tokino (トキノ): A merchant cat from Ransen. He's about
                    Konoe's age, so they easily became
                    friends. He comes to Karou every now
                    and then for both business and to visit
                    Konoe.

             ===================================

[Places]

   Shisa (祇沙): The island country on which the story takes
                 place. A heavily forested world that has
                 no sun. Their world instead has two moons
                 that alternate in the sky.

   Karou (火楼): A small and violent village on the south-
                 west end of Shisa. The game's story begins here.

   Kira (吉良): A village that keeps itself hidden from the
                 public. The village is very strict and
                 protective of its rules and customs. The
                 cats living in Kira are all pure-blooded
                 descendants of of other Kira cats since
                 the villagers do not mingle with others.

   Ransen (藍閃): Shisa's most prosperous town. The town
                  holds special festivals every spring and
                  winter. Ransen is also famous for its
                  large library. Bardo's inn is located
                  in Ransen.

   Setsura (刹羅): A village known for its large, strong cats.

[Terms]

   Ribika (リビカ): A race of creatures that look like
                    humans with cat ears and tails. They
                    also have cat-like behavior. If you
                    ever hear the word "cat" in the game,
                    they're talking about Ribika.

   Futatsu Zue (二つ杖): The Ribika word (literally means
                     "two walking sticks") for humans --
                      a race that exists in Shisa only in
                      legends.

   Utsuro (虚ろ): A mysterious phenomenon slowly invading
                    Shisa. Plants and animals living in
                    places affected by Utsuro can not be
                    touched. If Ribika touch something
                    contaminated by Utsuro, they feel a
                    sharp pain. The spreading Utsuro has made
                    it very difficult for surrounding villages
                    to get food, causing starvation in the
                    area.

   Shikku (失躯): A strange disease that exists in Shisa.
                    Ribika affected by the disease will notice
                    part of their body suddenly missing,
                    followed by pain and fever. The rate of
                    death from Shikku is extremely high among
                    females, so females have become a bit rare.

   Touga (闘牙): Touga are skilled fighters. When working
                    as a pair with a Sanga, the Sanga supports
                    the Touga with a song that significantly
                    raises the Touga's combat abilities.
                    Anyone can become a Touga with training.

   Sanga (賛牙): Works in pairs with a Touga to support
                    the Touga with the power of song. Though
                    they use the power of song, they don't
                    actually sing in combat -- a sound that
                    their Touga can hear is emitted from their
                    bodies often without actual sound or words.
                    Unlike Touga, one can only become a Sanga
                    through birth -- you have to be born with
                    the ability. Because of this, Sanga are
                    highly sought after.

   Michishirube no Ha (道しるべの葉): Literally a "path-
                     finding leaf. It is a leaf that absorbs
                     light and glows enough to light up a
                     room. Konoe uses Michishirube no Ha
                     because he does not like fire (as a
                     lantern would use).

   Kuim (クィム): A fictional fruit that is Konoe's
                     favorite. The fruit is said to have a
                     sweet and sour taste. In official
                     merchandise, the fruit's appearance is
                     small and perfectly round with a pinkish-
                     red color and a single leaf sticking out
                     of it.

   Meigi (冥戯): A tribe of demon worshippers. Has strong
                     feelings against Kira and its people.

[Main Menu]

   The main menu is in English, so it shouldn't give English-
  speaking players any problems. But just in case, here are
  the options on the main menu and their function:

      Start --> begins a new game
      Load --> loads a previously-saved game
      Config --> leads to the config page (see below)
      Extra* --> leads to the extras page (see below)
      Exit --> exits and closes the game
      Linear Notes* --> leads to a secret area with bonus
                        game commentary and images

    * = you must beat the game at least once with a
        GOOD ENDING to unlock these starred options

[Config]

   These options are all written in Japanese, so I'll translate
 from the top:

 Message-related options:

     Game Speed (ゲームスピード) : You can pick between
         "normal", "Quick A", "Quick B", or "Low Spec".
         It's the speed the game runs at. In normal mode,
         text appears letter by letter into the text box.
         In Quick A mode, the speed the text appears is faster.
         In Quick B mode, the text fills the box instantly.
         "Low Spec" mode should be used for slower computers
         that have trouble running the game.

     Message Speed (メッセージスピード): self-explanatory. Move
         the bar left if you want the game's text to move faster,
         right if you want it slower.

     Keep Skip on after Decisions (選択肢後も継続してスキップ):
         If you're holding shift to skip previously-seen text,
         turn this option on to remain in skip mode even after
         you have to stop and choose a decision from a menu of
         choices without having to press shift again. Default
         is off.

     Skip Even Unread/New Text (未読時でもスキップ) : When using the
         text skip mode to quickly scroll through text, turn this
         option on if you want to skip even text you have not
         seen before. When it's off (default = off), holding the
         shift key (to activate text skipping) will only speed
         through text you have already seen before (in a previous
         play-through, for example). So use caution when turning
         this option on so you don't accidentally miss new
         text when you're replaying the game.

  Sound-related options:

     From the top, the options are:

         * Turn on/off BGM (background music)
         * Adjust BGM volume
         * Turn on/off sound effects
         * Adjust sound effects volume
         * Turn on/off character voices
         * Adjust character voices volume

   The Bottom Right Box:
         * Shows script version (download a patch from the game's
           official site to update the script to fix its minor
           typos if you want -- it's not really necessary)
         * User Registration Button (ユーザ登録ボタン) -- leads
           you to a website where you can fill out a user survey
           to provide the game's developers with feedback.

   The Bottom Left Box (voice controls):
          * If you want to turn a certain character's voice
            off, check the little box next to their name (the
            box will turn green instead of yellow). All
            characters that you select will have their voice
            turned off, so it's useful if you like hearing
            voices but happen to hate a specific character's
            voice.

[Extra]

      CG Library --> You can view any CG images you have
                     unlocked/previously seen in the main
                     game here. You can view background
                     images, too. There are 143 CGs to unlock.

      Recollection Library --> You can re-watch certain scenes
                      that you have already seen in the main
                      game. Given the game's adult genre, they
                      are ALL sex scenes. There are 10 of these
                      adult scenes in the game to unlock.

      Media Library --> Lets you listen to the game's beautiful
                      music. You can also listen to the vocal
                      theme song(s) and watch a few movies (the
                      intro and trailers). There are 30
                      background music tracks, 2 vocal songs,
                      and 3 movies.

[In-Game Controls]

   * Enter/left click : proceeds to the next message
   * Space bar : hides the message box (so you can see the
                 in-game images clearly)
   * A : lets the text scroll by at a read-able pace
          without forcing you to press anything to pull
          up the next message. Good for hands-free playing.
   * Shift : Activates text skipping. Hold down the shift
             key to quickly zoom through text you have seen
             before (perhaps in a previous playthrough).
             The game remembers what text/scenes you have
             and have not seen before.
   * Ctrl+B : Sends you back to the last decision box reached.
              So if you screw up and pick a wrong answer, you
              can easily go back to the last decision point
              and change your answer.
   * B / scroll up (on wheel mouse) : Views the text log. You
                can go back and read previously-written
                text if you accidentally missed it. Click
                the little red speaker icon next to spoken
                text to hear the character repeat it out loud.
   * S : Save. Takes you to a page where you can pick a
         box to save your game in.
   * L : Load. Takes you to a page where you can load a
         previously saved game.
   * F : Fullscreen mode. Lets you change between playing in
         fullscreen mode or window mode.
   * C : Config. Takes you to the config menu.
   * T : Return to the Title screen.
   * ESC : Closes/quits the game.
   * Right click : brings up the options menu to remind you
                   of these controls or let you select them
                   by clicking instead of hotkey. If you can't
                   read the menu, the options are the same
                   as listed above (same order, too). The top
                   option (where it says "NONE" in English)
                   closes the menu and takes you back to the
                   game.

             ===================================
           ||     Walkthrough - Rai's Route     ||
             ===================================

   The following walkthrough sections will tell you (in order)
what decisions to make to get the desired ending (as well as
all CGs on the desired route). The game is very linear, so
you won't have to do a lot of sidetracking if you want to get
a bad ending on purpose (to collect CGs or see scenes).
I've provided the decision you need to select to go in the
right direction, followed by a rough translation of the choice.

   Save often so you can get the bad endings and complete
your CG collection! Selections to trigger a bad ending
(in other words, a depressing "game over") will
be marked with !!!BAD END!!!, to make it nice and obvious.
I'll list the correct/good end option first, then the bad
end option right below.

* 生贄の様子を窺う
 (go check on the sacrifice cat)
* ヘビが締め上げてくる加虐の心
 (heart painfully strangled by the snake)
* 這い回るヘビの皮膚のなまめかしさ
  (captivated by the slithering snake's skin)
* 身も凍る蛇の皮膚の冷たさ
  (the snake's skin is cold enough to even freeze the body)
* ヘビが体に巻きつく息苦しさ
  (the snake painfully suffocating the body)

------NOTE: decisions made up to this-----
-------point don't really affect the------
---------ending or help obtain CGs--------

* 思わず見入る
  (unintentionally gaze at)
* おまえはどうするんだ
  (what are you going to do?)
* ひどく哀しくなる
  (get very sad)
* じゃあ、決まりだな
  (then it's settled)
* 奇妙な喜びの感覚が強い
  (the strangely happy sensation is strong)
* いい加減にしろ
  (give me a break!)
* とりあえず話を聞く
  (listen to the story first)
* ライの気配を感じた
  (sensed Rai's presence)
* 禁欲を
  (abstinence)
* 罪悪を
  (sin)
* 祈りを
  (prayer)
* 篝火を
  (bonfire)
 [!!!BAD END!!! --> select 業火を (hell fire) for Razel's ending]
* 買う
  (buy)
* 我慢する
  (control yourself/be patient)
* 止めるだろう
  (we should stop)
 [!!!BAD END!!! --> 逃げ出すだろう (we should run away)]
* 差し出された手をはねのける
  (push aside the outstretched hand)
 [!!!BAD END!!! --> 差し出された手を取る (take the outstretched hand)
                   this will get you Froud's ending]
* 声に耳を傾ける --> GOOD END for Rai's path
  (listen to the voice)
 [!!!BAD END!!! --> 声を無視する (ignore the voice) for Rai's bad ending]

Rai path notes: Though almost all of Rai's CGs are obtained through
finishing Rai's path with his good end, the Razel end, Froud
end, and Rai's bad end also have CGs. Each bad ending requires
only one option to trigger (and is triggered immediately),
so the other CGs are easy to get.

           ||    Walkthrough - Asato's Route    ||
             ===================================

  Here's Asato's walkthrough! The first part is similar to Rai's
route. As before, I've marked the alternate options that lead
to bad endings.

* 生贄の様子を窺う
 (go check on the sacrifice cat)
* ヘビが締め上げてくる加虐の心
 (heart painfully strangled by the snake)
* 這い回るヘビの皮膚のなまめかしさ
  (captivated by the slithering snake's skin)
* 身も凍る蛇の皮膚の冷たさ
  (the snake's skin is cold enough to even freeze the body)
* ヘビが体に巻きつく息苦しさ
  (the snake painfully suffocating the body)

------NOTE: decisions made up to this-----
-------point don't really affect the------
---------ending or help obtain CGs--------

* 思わず見入る
  (unintentionally gaze at)
* おまえはどうするんだ
  (what are you going to do?)
* ひどく哀しくなる
  (get very sad)
* じゃあ、決まりだな
  (then it's settled)
* 奇妙な喜びの感覚が強い
  (the strangely happy sensation is strong)
* いい加減にしろ
  (give me a break!)
* とりあえず話を聞く
  (listen to the story first)
* アサトの気配を感じた
  (sensed Asato's presence)
* 禁欲を
  (abstinence)
* 罪悪を
  (sin)
* 祈りを
  (prayer)
* 篝火を
  (bonfire)
  [!!!BAD END!!! --> select 業火を (hell fire) for Razel's ending]
* 後を追う
  (chase after)
* それでも諦めない --> GOOD END for Asato's path
  (even so I won't give up)
  [!!!BAD END!!! --> choose もう無理だ (it's no use) for Asato's bad ending]

Asato path notes: His path is easy and straightforward with only
two bad endings, so it shouldn't be any trouble to get all of his CGs.
His bad ending comes with a CG.

  (even so, I don't want to)
 [!!!BAD END!!! --> select その方がいいはずだ (that would be for the best)
                    for Bardo's bad ending)]

Bardo's Route note: This route branches off of Rai's route, so
the first part is the same as Rai's until you are given the option
to look at Bardo. Different sources have suggested different
recommendations for a lot of the decisions, since most of them
don't affect the ending -- the only decisions that really matter
are the ones after "look at Bardo's face". I played Bardo's route
after loading my Rai save file near that decision point, so
everything before that doesn't really matter.

Also note that one of the CGs you get during Bardo's route
cannot be viewed in the Extras gallery. Looks like they forgot
to add it there.

  The voice actors are the people who bring the game's
characters to life. Even though this is a text adventure game
that most English-speaking gamers have never heard of (and
would likely never, ever want to play, thanks to its adult
genre), some of the cast members play characters in other
games that are far more popular. A lot of the voice actors in the
game use a fake name, so I've provided both their fake name
and their real name, if needed.
I've also added any other famous video game roles that
that actor has played (if available) to maybe make you a bit
more familiar with the character's voice.

Scelus natum est, somnium mihi orat.
Chaos natum est, tremit imprecata feles.
Aenigma natum est, silva me invitat.
Error natus est. Quo continet via?

Quis sum ego? Cogito fatum.
Peto vento. Sed ventus nescit, non respondit.
Meos oculos credo, vado.

Hora ridet, teget et fugit.
Voco, clamo, relinquor tenebris.
Vive, vive, ne hesitas, curre.
Per me, miseria est ergo lamento ego.
Lamento ego.

Rixa natus est. "...berebescu bazagra"
"Praefiscine" Bellum inferre possum? Vah!
Quis es tu? Ai. Secreta scis.
Peto lacui. Sed o lacus nescit, non respondit.
Te credere oh convado.

Mors tacite venit, subridet, eripit.
Animus clamat, illustrem solem vult.
Neniam o canta ne vetere, oiei.
Per me, miseria est ergo lamentas tu a.
Lamentas Vae!

Hora ridet, teget et fugit.
Voco, clamo, relinquor tenebris.
Vive, vive, ne hesitas, curre.
Per me, miseria est ergo lamento ego.

Lamento ego. Lamento ego.

Song Name: Denshou no Uta -Verum-
           伝承の詩 -Verum-
Vocals: Itou Kanako

Dicam rem gravem, nunc: est celata
sed tempus eam possit perdere et violare.

In calamitate, morte, fama, in maledictio, erat ibi hic.
In misericorde, bello, tenebris, ut ipsus malus stabat hic.
In blasphemia, impietate, in terribli forma est hic.
In clamore, vanitate: Estne vera forma, non vera? Non vera?

Oculos tuos aperite occulusos, ecce!
Rubem florem in canam terram tulit.
Spes, ea spes, sola.

Memoriam antiquam et veritatem te donam.
Veritas invisiblis est, sed manet, manet in perpetua.

Diem pacis, risum, placidem... Vitam, fructum, felicem...
Bonitatem, ordinem...Consensum, aequum, lucem...
Omnis eos petunt, ergo hujus dolebat vulnus.
Quiete, sed certe. Vultne amorem, vel non vult? Vel non vult? O!

Trans finem temporis, cor mei, vola.
In terram hic donat spiritum, solus ego, solus ego id scio.

In maledictio, erat ibi hic. Ut ipsus malus stabat hic.
In terribli forma est hic. Estne vera, non vera?
Vultne amorem, vel non vult? Quisne id scit?

Oculos tuos aperite occulusos, ecce!
Rubem florem in canam terram tulit. Spes, ea spes...

Trans finem temporis, cor mei, vola.
In terram hic donat spiritum, solus ego, solus ego id scio.

Song Name: Temple of Soul
Vocals: Watanabe Kazuhiro

The sun, the moon, the stars, the twilight,
The wind, a breath of life in our heart so soft
Can life be so beautiful now? Peace is in the air

So why oh why am I so much in despair?
The light won't reach my heart and I'm torn apart
I don't know if I could smile anymore

Won't you please tell me what was lost inside of me that day?
I cry out in dark dismay
I'm covering the tears with rain, red memories remain

You're the key that stops the rain, your vision still the same
but deep inside I know
Without you I'm left alone in a cage called life
You're the one that stops the pain, your love is in my veins
Forever you will live inside my temple of soul

The smile the wound the sand the heat inside
Wind blows life within our heart so slow
Yes nothing to be afraid of now peace is in the air

But why do I feel the world is so unfair
Your touch is lost, oblivion darkness and
I can not stand the solitaire

Tell me why I was left instead of you please talk to me
Can I stand up when it rains?
Tears penetrate my heart with pain, red memories still stay

You're the key that stops the rain, your vision still the same
but deep inside I know
Without you I'm left alone in a cage called life
You're the one that stops the pain, your love is in my veins
Forever you will live inside my temple of soul

You're the key that stops the rain, your vision still the same
but deep inside I know
Without you I'm left alone in a cage called life
You're the one that stops the pain, your love is in my veins
Forever you will live inside my temple of soul

Song Name: When the End
Vocals: Itou Kanako, Watanabe Kazuhiro

So near, but so far away you'll forever be
locked within my heart, presence in the air the melody

So far but so close we stay we shall never be
lost within our hearts
the phantom star, we both will see

But when the end comes will it take it all away?
sweeping our memories, erasing time that we so much shared
when the end comes everything fade away
don't let it come undone within our hearts let it stay
even when..

In darkness we seek for light though it may never be
someday we might find the sky we long so much to see

Hopeless, we still can believe
tomorrow will find its way
to the key of life the flame withing us we believe

But when the end comes will it take it all away?
sweeping our memories, erasing time that we so much shared
when the end comes everything fade away
don't let it come undone within our hearts let it stay
even when..

Reach out, out towards the distant night
engrave the seed of life in our hearts
so deep that we dream of it

Fear not, the future awaits us
even if fate shall take our soul
we two shall unite as one

But when the end comes
hold you in my arms and I will take all of your pain away
hold on our memories, rebuilding time that we so much will share
the end comes
we'll find each other bound by our soul only our pain can fade away
don't let it come undone within our hearts let it stay
even when..

           ||                FAQ                ||
             ===================================

 Q: What route order do you recommend playing the game in?
 A: I played Asato's route first, then Rai's, then Bardo's. I think
    that way is the best, because Rai and Bardo's routes compliment
    each other.

 Q: Whose route did you like best?
 A: Bardo's. I saved the best fo last! All three are great, but Bardo's
    made me smile the most. Second favorite was Asato's, then Rai's.

 Q: Where can I get the patch and what does it do?
 A: There's a patch that fixes minor typos available on the
    Nitro+chiral official website (google it). It's not necessary
    to play the game, though.

 Q: What are the computer specs required to play?
 A: Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP, a computer with at least the processing
    power of a Pentium III 600MHz and at least 1.5GB of hard drive
    space. You also need to download DirectX 9.0 or higher.

 Q: Will this game work with Windows Vista?
 A: Yes, but you will have to download and apply a Vista patch from
    Nitro+chiral's official site first.

 Q: My game keeps crashing at (insert scene here)!
 A: Your save file might have gotten corrupted -- try going back to
    an older save file, load it, and text skip (shift key) your way
    back to where you were when it crashed. It will hopefully
    continue without crashing.

 Q: Is it possible for Konoe to end up alone?
 A: Nope. The game is so easy that Konoe will always have some sort
    of ending with someone. In fact, most of the decisions you
    make in the game don't matter at all -- some are just more
    amusing than others. You just have to make sure you choose
    the correct decision that sets you up on the route you want
    to take. These decisions are all really obvious, too, since
    they have the name of the character you want to go after in
    the decision box (such as the "look at Bardo's face" option)

 Q: I found another guide that suggests different decisions than
    you did to get (character name here)'s ending!
 A: Again, most of the decisions you make don't matter, so don't
    worry about it too much.

 Q: Is this game available/playable anywhere in English?
 A: Nope. The game is 100% Japanese text. It's so long and complicated
    that an English version is unlikely.

 Q: The art in the game is pretty. Who is the game's artist?
 A: Tatana Kana.

 Q: What do you get for beating the game?
 A: Clear the game with a good ending once to unlock the Extra
    and Linear Notes sections on the main menu. Ulock everything
    and all you get is a screen that says "congratulations".

 Q: One of Bardo's CGs isn't appearing in his gallery!
 A: Yup. During Bardo's route, there is one CG that
    appears during the story that cannot be viewed in the CG gallery
    under the Extras menu. Guess they forgot to add it (poor Bardo).
