Every time I play the game says an error was encountered while saving and for the rest of the game the cursor is a save hourglass.
If you have Vista, then The Sims might be trying to save in the program files, and Vista prevents any nonadmin access to modifying or adding files in that folder. Try running it as administrator--other older games often have this issue.
